What was the Extra-Terrestrial Vehicle?
The ETV was a custom-bodied car created by Mike Vetter at his Florida-based company, The Car Factory. In a July 2, 2009 report, New Atlas described the build as a Chevrolet Aveo donor car whose original body was removed and replaced with a distinctive, futuristic shell. It was a road-car project, not an extraterrestrial or flying vehicle.
The report presented the ETV as a blend of custom styling and practical automotive equipment. Its unusual exterior was paired with features intended for driving and maneuvering, though the article does not provide independent testing or a comparison with other versions.
How was the ETV equipped?
- Gull-wing doors: The doors lifted upward on custom hinges.
- Camera-fed rear views: Three onboard cameras—left, right and center—sent views to monitors for seeing behind the car.
- Adjustable suspension: The front and rear suspension could be adjusted.
- Custom lighting: The report described plasma-style tail lights.
- Wireless remote system: The ETV included a wireless remote system, though the article does not explain its full functions.
The rear area could accommodate children. Adult headroom, however, was still being worked on when the 2009 article was published, so the report should not be taken as confirmation of final passenger space.

What did the ETV cost in 2009?
New Atlas reported several historical purchase and build routes. These figures describe offers reported in 2009; they are not current prices or evidence that any option remains available.

Was the ETV road legal?
The 2009 New Atlas article reported that Vetter described the vehicle as certified for road use because it was registered in Florida as a Chevrolet Aveo. That is a report of the builder’s statement at the time, not an independent legal determination. It does not establish the ETV’s current registration status or whether a similar build would meet requirements in another state or country.
Can you still buy an ETV kit?
The historical article documents a $10,000 body-kit offer and other build routes, but it does not show that the kit, a completed ETV, or fabrication services are currently for sale. A buyer considering a similar custom build would need to verify availability directly with a fabricator and check applicable registration, inspection, lighting, visibility and safety requirements for the intended location.
