BMW advertises up to 912 km (567 miles) of WLTP range for the i3 50 xDrive and charging at up to 400 kW. Those figures make the car a serious contender on paper; they do not prove real-world superiority, sales success or market displacement.
What is the new BMW i3?
This is not the older, small BMW i3 hatchback. The new i3 is an all-electric sedan in BMW’s Neue Klasse family and the electric member of the new 3 Series range. BMW introduced it with a new display and operating concept, Panoramic iDrive, and a control system it calls Heart of Joy. These are manufacturer descriptions; the available specifications do not establish how the systems compare with Tesla’s in independent testing.
BMW initially announced a maximum 900 km WLTP range and charging of up to 400 kW, describing the range as provisional because binding WLTP figures were not yet available. Its later 2026 3 Series announcement lists updated figures for two versions. BMW’s original i3 announcement and the 2026 3 Series announcement provide the company’s details.
How do the BMW i3 and Tesla Model 3 compare on range?
Use figures from the same test cycle and market. BMW’s European headline is WLTP; Tesla publishes EPA-estimated ranges for the US and WLTP figures for Germany. These are test-cycle estimates, not promises of the distance a driver will achieve. Trim, wheels, equipment, weather, speed and other conditions affect actual range.

European WLTP figures
| Model and version | Published range | Context |
|---|---|---|
| BMW i3 50 xDrive | Up to 912 km (567 miles) | BMW’s 2026 WLTP figure; configuration can affect range. |
| BMW i3 40 xDrive | Up to 710 km (441 miles) | BMW’s 2026 WLTP figure. |
| Tesla Model 3 Standard | 572 km | Tesla Germany’s WLTP listing. |
| Tesla Model 3 Premium AWD | 660 km | Tesla Germany’s WLTP listing. |
| Tesla Model 3 Premium RWD | Up to 750 km | Tesla Germany’s WLTP figure; range varies with wheel selection. |
The figures put the i3 50 xDrive ahead of the listed Model 3 versions on headline WLTP range, while the i3 40 xDrive’s figure is below the Model 3 Premium RWD’s maximum. They are not a controlled, like-for-like comparison of equipment or driving conditions. See BMW’s 3 Series specifications and Tesla Germany’s Model 3 specifications.
US estimates are a separate comparison
BMW USA lists a preliminary estimated 446–468 miles for the i3 50 xDrive, based on EPA testing procedures. BMW says recently released models may not yet be fully EPA certified. Tesla’s US page lists EPA-estimated range of 321 miles for the base Model 3 and 346 miles for the Premium AWD. These published figures are not fully equivalent trim comparisons, and BMW’s estimate remains preliminary. Do not compare them directly with European WLTP numbers. BMW USA’s i3 page and Tesla’s US Model 3 page state their respective figures and qualifications.
Does the i3 charge faster than the Model 3?
BMW lists peak DC charging of up to 400 kW for the i3 50 xDrive and up to 300 kW for the 40 xDrive. For the 50 xDrive, BMW says a suitable DC station can add up to 423 km (263 miles) of WLTP range in ten minutes. In the US, BMW gives a different estimate: 191–208 miles in ten minutes. That page labels range estimates preliminary.

Tesla lists Model 3 Supercharging up to 250 kW in the US. For the Premium AWD in Germany, it says up to 282 km can be added in 15 minutes. The distance-added claims use different markets, time windows and test-cycle conventions, so they do not establish which car will complete a real trip faster. Peak power is not the charging rate throughout a session: the charger, battery state, temperature and other conditions matter. BMW’s European figures, BMW USA’s estimates, Tesla’s US specifications and Tesla Germany’s specifications describe the respective claims.

BMW lists the i3 50 xDrive at 345 kW (469 hp), with 0–100 km/h in 4.7 seconds. Its i3 40 xDrive is listed at 275 kW (374 hp). BMW USA gives the 50 xDrive 463 hp and a preliminary 0–60 mph time of 4.5 seconds. The different speed intervals mean the European and US acceleration times should not be treated as identical measurements.
Tesla’s US page identifies a 528 hp Model 3 Performance trim, alongside separate range and charging figures for other versions. Comparing that performance model with a BMW range figure or a different Model 3 trim would skew the result. BMW promotes Panoramic iDrive and Heart of Joy; Tesla foregrounds its software, driver-assistance features and charging ecosystem. The published specifications describe product claims, not an independent comparison of interface quality, driver assistance or driving experience.

Is the new BMW i3 better than the Tesla Model 3?
There is no single winner established by these specifications. BMW’s strongest paper advantage is the i3 50 xDrive’s maximum European WLTP range and its higher stated peak charging power. Tesla’s Model 3 has multiple versions, including a Premium RWD with a substantial WLTP range claim and a separate Performance trim. Which matters more depends on the exact version, market, equipment and use case.
There is also no independent comparative road test in the cited material. Published specifications cannot settle ride comfort, efficiency in everyday conditions, charging-stop duration, software usability or ownership experience. Those questions require comparable testing.

BMW says series production began at its Munich plant on 6 August 2026. Its US page anticipates deliveries in early 2027; BMW’s original global announcement had said deliveries would begin in autumn 2026, so the US timing is the relevant qualification for US shoppers. BMW USA has not settled a final US price on the cited page and says a reservation does not guarantee the vehicle’s price. BMW’s production announcement and BMW USA’s model page give those updates.

For home charging, BMW USA references the i3’s NACS port and a multifunction charging cable. A Level 2 home charger can be a practical option, but buyers should confirm connector and vehicle compatibility, local electrical requirements and installation needs before choosing equipment. No particular charger or installer is established here.
Does the i3 threaten the Model 3’s market position?
It is reasonable to call the i3 a serious product challenge: BMW has announced a new electric sedan with ambitious range and charging specifications, and production is underway. BMW board member Jochen Goller described demand as strong after orders opened ahead of schedule, but that is BMW’s own characterization, not independently reported sales data.
The cited official specifications and announcements do not provide comparable sales, registrations or market-share figures. They therefore support a case that BMW has built a credible competitor, not a claim that it has already displaced or overtaken the Model 3.
