The small orange light at the outer edge of a headlight is usually the front side-marker lamp if it stays on steadily. If it flashes with the turn signal, it is the front turn-signal lamp—or a shared lamp assembly performing that function. The light’s behavior matters more than its position or color.
What is the orange light called?
For a steady amber light near the front side of the vehicle, the likely term is front side-marker lamp, also called a side-marker light. Its purpose is to make the vehicle more visible from the side.
People often call the entire assembly a headlight, but an amber lamp can sit inside the same housing as the headlamp. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) explains that front side-marker and turn-signal lamps may be incorporated into the headlight housing: NHTSA interpretation, August 11, 2000.
How to tell which light it is
- Steady amber light at the front side: likely the front side-marker lamp.
- Flashes when you signal a turn: front turn-signal lamp, also commonly called the indicator. Turn signals are defined by their flashing directional function.
- Comes on with the parking lights: it could be a parking lamp or a combined-function lamp. Check the vehicle’s manual or wiring diagram for the specific name.
Some assemblies combine more than one lighting function, so a single orange section may act differently depending on the lights or signal selected.

Why the terms can be confusing
In U.S. federal lighting rules, a side-marker lamp, a turn-signal lamp, and a parking lamp are distinct functions, even when they share a housing. NHTSA describes front turn signals and front side markers as amber; for the vehicle categories addressed in its interpretation, forward-facing parking lamps may be white or amber. See NHTSA’s interpretation of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108 and the U.S. regulation, 49 CFR § 571.108.
That is U.S. regulatory context, not a universal naming rule. Labels and assembly designs can differ by country, vehicle, and model year. Also, an amber-colored area may be a reflector rather than an illuminated lamp; color alone does not confirm its function.

What to call it when looking for a replacement
Use “front side-marker lamp” if the light is steady and serves as a side marker; use “front turn-signal lamp” if it flashes with the indicator. Before ordering a bulb or assembly, check the owner’s manual or a vehicle-specific parts catalog. The right part depends on the vehicle, and some amber sections may not have a separately replaceable bulb.
- Confirm the year, make, model, and trim.
- Check the manual’s bulb chart or the parts catalog for that exact vehicle.
- If the function is unclear, compare how the light behaves with the parking lights on and when signaling, or consult a mechanic.
There is no universal bulb number for an orange light in a headlight housing. NHTSA notes that amber light can come from an amber bulb behind a clear lens or a clear bulb behind an amber lens; that construction detail does not establish the correct replacement for a particular car.
