Some types—called e-fuels—are made using hydrogen produced with electricity. They may help cut emissions in sectors such as aviation and shipping, where batteries are harder to use, but they are not a universal climate fix or a proven way to preserve every passenger-car engine. Their climate impact depends on how they are made, and practical use depends on fuel availability and vehicle approval.
What is synthetic fuel?
“Synthetic fuel” is an umbrella term for fuels manufactured through chemical processes. It is broader than “e-fuel”: the International Energy Agency (IEA) uses e-fuel for fuels obtained from electrolytic hydrogen. The terms are related, but not interchangeable unless a particular discussion defines them that way. IEA: The Role of E-fuels in Decarbonising Transport
A fuel’s name does not tell you whether it is low-emissions, approved for a particular engine, or sold where you live. Those are separate questions about production, vehicle compatibility and availability.
How are e-fuels made?
One example begins with electricity powering electrolysis, which splits water to produce hydrogen. That hydrogen can be combined with carbon dioxide captured from the air or obtained from biogenic sources to make methanol. Further processing can turn methanol into liquid fuels such as petrol or, depending on the process, kerosene.

Porsche says its pilot project in Punta Arenas began industrial production at the end of 2022. That is a company statement about a specific project; it does not establish broad consumer supply or availability at ordinary filling stations. Porsche: e-fuels pilot plant in Chile
Are synthetic fuels carbon neutral?
Not automatically. The IEA cautions that “Actual reductions depend on choices made across the supply chain.” Electricity for hydrogen production and processing, the source of the carbon, conversion losses, transport and other production stages all affect the lifecycle result. Dedicated low-emissions electricity can improve the case; relying on emissions-intensive power can undermine it. IEA: Global Energy Review 2025

Using carbon captured from the atmosphere or from biogenic sources can recycle that carbon into fuel, but burning the fuel still releases CO2 from a vehicle’s tailpipe. A climate claim therefore needs to account for the full lifecycle rather than treating tailpipe emissions as zero. The cited sources do not establish a single emissions-reduction percentage that applies to all synthetic fuels, so “carbon neutral” is too broad a label without a specified pathway and accounting boundary. IEA: The Role of E-fuels in Decarbonising Transport
How do e-fuels compare with battery cars?
Comparisons should include the emissions from producing fuel or electricity, as well as vehicle size, efficiency, lifetime and distance driven. The IEA’s global analysis estimates that a medium-size battery-electric car sold in 2023 has about half the lifecycle emissions of an equivalent internal-combustion car running on oil-based fuel over 15 years, or around 200,000 km, under the analysis’s scenarios. This is a comparison with oil-based fuel, not a direct test of every e-fuel pathway. IEA: Global EV Outlook 2024, outlook for emissions reductions

A separate IEA calculator example illustrates how results depend on the assumed vehicle and use. For a typical medium petrol car driven 42 km per day over 15 years, it reports 54.1 tonnes of CO2-equivalent emissions; for an equivalent battery EV with a 300 km range, it reports 25.0 tonnes. These are lifecycle estimates for that illustrative setting, not universal values or a direct comparison with an e-fuel car. IEA: EV Life Cycle Assessment Calculator
For the EU, an ICCT analysis published in 2025 models battery-EV lifecycle emissions at 63 g CO2e/km using the projected average electricity mix for 2025–2044. That figure is specific to the study’s EU context and assumptions; it does not settle the comparison for every fuel pathway or market. ICCT: EU vehicle lifecycle analysis

Where could synthetic fuels make the most sense?
The case is stronger in transport segments that are difficult to electrify than in ordinary road travel. The IEA sees significant opportunities to electrify road transport, while aviation and marine transport remain more reliant on fuels. Its 2023 report assesses what resources, infrastructure and cost reductions would be required for an ambitious assumed 10% e-fuel share in aviation and shipping by 2030. That is a scenario the report examines, not a forecast that the share will be reached. IEA: The Role of E-fuels in Decarbonising Transport
The IEA’s 2025 overview places synthetic hydrogen-based fuels among pathways still in early commercialisation. It also says sustainable fuels generally cost more than the fossil fuels they replace today, with costs varying by pathway and market. There is no single current retail price established here, and broad availability for everyday drivers should not be assumed. IEA: Global Energy Review 2025

A metal gift box is included.
Can you use synthetic fuel in an existing car?
There is no reliable model-by-model compatibility list established here. A fuel’s being synthetic does not by itself confirm that a particular engine, fuel system or emissions-control setup is approved to use it. Check the vehicle manufacturer’s guidance for the exact fuel specification before filling up, and verify that the fuel is actually available in your area.
