It is not a universal ATF: check the vehicle or component’s service information for the required fluid specification before filling or topping up.
What Type F transmission fluid is
Type F is a category of automatic transmission fluid, not a brand. The designation is associated with Ford specification ESW-M2C33-F, a historical specification for a particular friction behavior. Pennzoil explains that the specification calls for mineral oil and additives selected to change the base oil’s friction characteristics as little as possible, and prohibits friction modifiers. That produces the higher-friction profile intended for systems designed around it. Pennzoil’s Type F product information
Friction characteristics affect how transmission clutches engage. ExxonMobil says Ford transmissions built before 1977 and certain models from 1977–1980 were designed for high-friction fluid that lets shifting clutches engage quickly. Its application information identifies 1976-and-earlier Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury models and some 1977–1980 vehicles; it also points to the transmission dipstick marking for identifying relevant applications. Treat those years as historical guidance, not a definitive fitment rule for an individual vehicle. Mobil Type F ATF application information
Which vehicles and components use Type F?
Use Type F only when the applicable vehicle, transmission, or component documentation specifies Type F or the relevant specification. Older Ford-family vehicles are a common historical context, but the title alone cannot determine a particular car’s requirement. A transmission may have been replaced or modified, and model-year guidance does not account for every vehicle configuration.
#1 Best Overall
- Provides excellent resistance against clutch slippage for extended transmission life
- Provides excellent resistance to fluid oxidation/breakdown at high temperatures
- Recommended for use in all Ford passenger car automatic transmissions prior to the 1977 models as well as many 1977 through 1980 models.
- Approved for use in Mazda, Saab, Toyota, Volvo and other Japanese and European vehicles requiring a Type F Fluid
Type F is also specified for some power-steering systems. Motorcraft describes its product for automatic transmissions and power steering systems that require Type F; ExxonMobil likewise lists certain older Ford power-steering applications. This does not mean Type F is suitable for all power-steering systems. Motorcraft Type F safety data sheet · Mobil Type F ATF application information
How to verify the right fluid
- Find the requirement. Check the owner’s manual, service manual, or other service documentation for the specific transmission or component.
- Check vehicle markings. If relevant, inspect the transmission dipstick or handle for an application marking and compare it with service information.
- Match the specification on the container. Confirm that the product explicitly identifies Type F or the specification the component calls for. A brand name, red color, or generic “ATF” label is not proof of compatibility.
- Resolve conflicts before filling. If the manual, component label, and fluid information do not agree, identify the installed transmission or component and consult its service documentation rather than guessing.
Ford owner-manual guidance for a different application illustrates the general principle: use fluid that conforms to the defined specification. The 2026 Lincoln Nautilus manual is not an application source for Type F, but its fluid guidance reinforces why the vehicle’s specified requirement matters. 2026 Lincoln Nautilus Owner’s Manual

- Excellent lubrication to gears and bushings allowing optimized transmission operation
- Good thermal and oxidation stability prolonging component life
- Designed for use in older ford vehicles (pre 1982) requiring the unique friction characteristics of a type F transmission fluid
- Meets Ford ESW-M2C-33F, ESW-M2C-33G
Is Type F the same as MERCON or DEXRON?
No. Do not treat Type F, MERCON, DEXRON, or other ATF designations as interchangeable just because they are all transmission fluids. ExxonMobil says its Type F product is not recommended for transmissions calling for Dexron-II, Dexron-IIE, Dexron-III, or MERCON-approved fluids, and excludes other named Ford fluid types. That product guidance, together with Type F’s distinct friction profile, is a reason to follow the exact specification rather than choose a substitute by brand or broad fluid category. Buying Type F fluid
Motorcraft, Pennzoil, and Mobil publish information for Type F products, establishing that Type F remains a product category. That does not establish current stock or pricing at a particular retailer. Before buying, compare the required specification, the application, and the product label; brand or color alone should not decide the purchase. Rank #3
- Racing Type F
- High-Friction fluid allows quick gear engagement
- Faster shifting makes for less clutch slippage and lower heat
- Stable fluid that reduces wear in the transmission
- May be used in certain hydraulic systems and power steering units
What Type F does not tell you
The designation alone does not provide the correct fill quantity, change interval, or service procedure for a particular vehicle. Those depend on the vehicle and installed transmission or component, so use the relevant service documentation for those details.
