The tire loses some or all of its contact with the pavement, reducing the grip needed to steer and brake. Slow down on wet roads, keep your tires in good condition, and ease off the accelerator if the car begins to slide.
What hydroplaning feels like—and what is happening
A car that suddenly feels light or as if it is floating may be hydroplaning, but that sensation alone does not confirm the cause. Hydroplaning can affect one or more tires, and the loss of grip can be partial or substantial; the tires do not have to be completely lifted off the road.
Normally, tire tread channels water away from the contact patch so rubber can grip the pavement. When water accumulates faster than the tread and road surface can drain it, a wedge of water can reduce tire-pavement friction. TxDOT identifies water depth, roadway geometry, speed, tread depth, inflation pressure, and pavement condition as factors in whether that happens. Its pavement drainage manual gives a conditional example of hydroplaning at 55 mph in as little as 0.08 inches (2 mm) of water; that is not a universal threshold or a safe-speed rule. TxDOT’s hydroplaning guidance explains the mechanics and variables.
There is no dependable speed at which hydroplaning always begins. Tire design and load, tread condition, inflation pressure, water depth, speed, and pavement all affect grip. A posted speed limit is not a guarantee that the same speed is safe in rain. NHTSA’s practical advice is simple: slow down when the road is wet.

How to reduce the risk before and during a rainy drive
Lower your speed and give yourself room
- Drive more slowly than you would on a dry road, adjusting further for heavy rain, pooled water, poor visibility, or worn pavement.
- Leave extra following distance so you have more time and space to slow down.
- Avoid abrupt lane changes, sharp turns, and sudden acceleration or braking, which can unsettle a vehicle that already has limited grip.
- Avoid standing water where possible. If the road is flooded or barricaded, turn around rather than trying to cross.
Wet-weather risk is broader than hydroplaning alone: a 2021 National Academies summary reports that approximately 15% to 20% of road traffic crashes occur in wet-weather conditions. That figure covers wet-weather crashes generally, not crashes specifically caused by hydroplaning. The National Academies’ 2021 report summary concerns predicting and mitigating dynamic hydroplaning on roadways.
Inspect tread and tire condition
Check tires regularly for worn tread and visible damage. NHTSA says tires are unsafe once tread reaches 2/32 inch. Its penny test: place a penny in the tread with Lincoln’s head upside down and facing you; if you can see the top of his head, replace the tire. Tire treadwear indicators are another way to spot wear. The 2/32-inch figure is a minimum replacement criterion, not a target for confident driving in heavy rain. See NHTSA’s TireWise guidance for tire safety information.

Check cold tire pressure against the vehicle’s recommendation
Check pressure at least monthly and before a long trip, when the tires are cold. Use the pressure listed on the vehicle’s door placard or in its owner’s manual—not the maximum pressure printed on the tire sidewall. A digital tire pressure gauge can help you measure pressure; the vehicle maker’s specification tells you what the reading should be. Correct pressure supports proper tire operation, but no gauge or pressure setting can guarantee that a vehicle will not hydroplane. NHTSA’s summer driving and road-trip tips explain how to check pressure.
Choose tires for the vehicle and compare wet performance carefully
When replacing tires, use the correct size and load suitability for your vehicle, and consider tread condition and design. NHTSA wet-traction grades can help compare wet-pavement stopping performance, but they are not a direct measure or guarantee of hydroplaning resistance. No particular tire model is established here as the best for preventing hydroplaning. NHTSA describes its ratings in TireWise tire safety and ratings.

What to do if your car starts hydroplaning
- Stay calm and ease off the accelerator. Let the vehicle slow naturally rather than accelerating to regain control.
- Avoid abrupt inputs. Do not make a sudden turn or slam on the brakes. Keep the steering wheel steady and make only gentle corrections in the direction the vehicle is traveling.
- Wait for grip to return. As the tires regain contact with the pavement, continue steering smoothly and bring the vehicle under control.
- Reassess before continuing. Once traction returns, reduce speed as needed and reassess the water, visibility, and traffic conditions.
Official driver guidance varies in how it describes braking and the use of anti-lock braking systems (ABS). Avoid blanket rules such as pumping the brakes or applying them forcefully; follow your owner’s manual and local driver guidance. City of San José, California DMV, and Washington State Department of Licensing guidance all address wet-road or hydroplaning responses, with details that differ. NHTSA’s broader advice for severe weather is to avoid driving into flooded roads: Driving in severe weather.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why floodwater is a separate danger
Do not use a visual estimate of depth to decide that floodwater is safe to cross. Flooded roads can conceal hazards and create dangers beyond ordinary hydroplaning; a barricade means the road is closed. Turn around and choose another route. NHTSA’s severe-weather driving guidance warns drivers to avoid flooded roads.
