Subaru describes it as full-time AWD, but the hardware that transfers power between the axles differs by vehicle and transmission. The name does not mean every Subaru uses the same center differential or maintains a fixed 50/50 front-to-rear split.
What is Subaru Symmetrical AWD?
Subaru uses “Symmetrical AWD” to describe both an all-wheel-drive system and the layout of the engine and drivetrain. In the characteristic arrangement, a longitudinally mounted, horizontally opposed BOXER engine sits ahead of a drivetrain extending toward both axles. Subaru says this balanced arrangement contributes to stability; that is the manufacturer’s explanation, not an independent finding that every Subaru handles or grips better than every rival.
The word “symmetrical” describes the layout, not identical hardware across the model range. Subaru’s technical overview lists different AWD arrangements, and regional Subaru pages connect particular systems to particular transmissions. Those descriptions establish variation, not a single global rule for every model or trim.
How does Subaru Symmetrical AWD work?
Subaru of America describes its system as full-time AWD: power is supplied to both axles, with distribution varying according to detected conditions. Its consumer explainer describes front, rear, and center differentials as allowing wheels to turn at different rates while delivering power. This is a broad explanation of AWD, not a complete engineering specification for every Subaru powertrain.

Subaru’s materials identify at least two arrangements, so the system’s exact behavior depends on the vehicle and transmission rather than the marketing name alone.
Active Torque Split AWD
Subaru technical pages describe Active Torque Split AWD in connection with Lineartronic-equipped models. Subaru Canada notes market-specific exclusions, while Subaru UK also pairs Lineartronic with Active Torque Split. These regional descriptions should not be treated as a definitive fitment guide for another country or for every model year.

Viscous center differential AWD
Subaru also describes AWD using a viscous-coupling limited-slip center differential. Subaru Canada says that configuration maintains a 50/50 front-to-rear split. That figure applies to the configuration described on that regional page; it is not a universal specification for all Subaru AWD vehicles.
Is Subaru Symmetrical AWD always on?
Subaru of America calls Symmetrical AWD full-time and says power is continuously delivered with variable distribution based on sensor detection. Subaru also distinguishes full-time AWD from part-time 4WD in its consumer explanation. “Always on” is therefore a useful shorthand for Subaru’s full-time characterization, but it should not be read as a claim that every model uses the same torque split or center hardware.

What makes Subaru AWD different?
The most useful distinction is the combination of a longitudinal BOXER-engine layout and AWD hardware, rather than a claim that one mechanism or torque split defines the entire range. Subaru presents the arrangement as balanced and stable. The reviewed manufacturer materials do not provide independent, head-to-head measurements showing that every Subaru has better traction or handling than every competing AWD vehicle.
To compare Subaru with another AWD vehicle, look beyond the badge. The meaningful questions are whether both axles receive power continuously or on demand, what center coupling or differential is used, how the vehicle is packaged, what traction-control features are included, and how any comparative test was conducted.

What does X-MODE do?
X-MODE is an additional feature available on some Subaru models, not another name for Symmetrical AWD. Subaru describes it as a system that can coordinate vehicle controls with the drivetrain to help manage traction. Availability and operation are model-specific, so check the specifications for the particular vehicle and market rather than assuming it is standard throughout the range.
