Ross Gerber’s firm reduced its Tesla holdings in the first quarter of 2025, but the reported sale was a partial cut—not a complete exit. Business Insider said Gerber-Kawasaki Wealth and Investment Management sold more than 26,000 shares, a little over 10% of its stake. Gerber’s warnings about a possible steep decline were forecasts tied to Tesla’s execution and valuation, not proof that the company had collapsed.
What did Ross Gerber’s firm sell?
Business Insider reported that a Q1 2025 filing showed Gerber-Kawasaki Wealth and Investment Management sold more than 26,000 Tesla shares, representing a little over 10% of the firm’s stake. The reporting did not establish when during the quarter the sales took place. The filing was attributed to the firm associated with Gerber; it does not support saying that Gerber personally sold every Tesla share he owned.
Business Insider also reported that the firm had sold more than 204,000 Tesla shares over the preceding two years. That cumulative figure covers a different period and should not be confused with the Q1 2025 sale.
Did Gerber predict Tesla would collapse?
Gerber made a sharply bearish forecast, but his language was conditional. In a February 2025 interview reported by Business Insider, he said, “So Tesla’s vulnerability is it could drop by 50% if things don’t work out for it this year.” That was a possible decline in the stock’s value, not a claim that Tesla had already lost half its value or that a collapse was certain. Business Insider’s February report covered that warning.

In May, Gerber said the next six months would be “make or break” for Tesla, particularly if the company could not establish a credible Robotaxi business. He also said, “We certainly haven’t changed our view where we would start adding it again.” Those remarks describe his view at the time; they do not establish what Tesla later delivered or how the stock performed. Business Insider’s May report covered the sale and interview.
Why was Gerber bearish?
Gerber’s concerns, as reported in February and May 2025, centered on whether Tesla could translate its promises and reputation into results. They are his assessments, not independently established findings.

Vehicle sales and demand
Gerber questioned Tesla’s vehicle-sales outlook. A bearish view here depends on the assumption that demand or sales performance will fall short of what investors expect; the cited reporting documents his concern, not a separate finding that proves that outcome.
Autonomy and Robotaxi execution
Gerber focused on whether Tesla could deliver a credible Robotaxi business and questioned the company’s autonomy claims, including Full Self-Driving capability. In his view, investor confidence depended in part on Tesla showing that its autonomous-driving ambitions could become a real business. A forecast about that execution is not evidence that the service has succeeded or failed.

Elon Musk’s leadership and Tesla’s brand
Gerber also raised concerns about Musk’s focus and his impact on Tesla’s brand. These are judgments about leadership and reputation; the reports do not quantify their effect on sales or company value.
Valuation
Gerber’s bearish case included Tesla’s valuation: the stock price, in his view, left the company vulnerable if its expected growth and future businesses did not materialize. That is an argument about expectations and risk, not a verified measure of what the shares should be worth.

What the sale does—and does not—show
The filing, as described by Business Insider, establishes that the firm reduced its stake during Q1 2025. It does not explain the precise timing of the sale or, by itself, establish that Gerber had abandoned Tesla permanently. In May, he said the firm had not changed its view about when it might start adding shares again.
The May 19, 2025, Futurism article matching the “dumped his stock” framing reflects a dramatic headline, but the reported transaction was a reduction of a little over one-tenth of the firm’s stake—not a reported liquidation of the position. “Total collapse” should likewise be read as a description of bearish sentiment, not as a demonstrated outcome.

How to evaluate the thesis
Gerber’s position can be understood as a set of conditional bets, rather than a settled verdict about Tesla. The main questions behind it are:
- Demand: Can Tesla sustain vehicle sales at a level that supports the expectations investors have priced in?
- Autonomy: Can the company demonstrate that its autonomy claims and Robotaxi plans can work as a credible product and business?
- Leadership and brand: Will Musk’s role strengthen Tesla’s prospects or weigh on its reputation and operations?
- Valuation: Do the company’s future growth prospects justify the expectations reflected in its stock price?
The cited reports establish Gerber’s answers and concerns in early 2025, but do not provide an independently established bullish counter-analysis. They also do not verify Tesla’s current share price, the firm’s later holdings, subsequent Robotaxi performance, or whether Gerber’s forecast came true. The account is limited to what was reported in February and May 2025.
