Depending on the vehicle, the system may include crash sensors, a control unit, seat-belt pretensioners, occupant sensors and warning indicators. It is not a substitute for wearing a seat belt.
What does a car’s SRS include?
SRS is a system, not just an airbag. Its exact components vary by make, model and year, so check the owner’s manual for your vehicle’s equipment and instructions.
For example, the 2022 Toyota Tundra Hybrid owner’s manual identifies airbags, impact sensors, an airbag sensor assembly, seat-belt pretensioners and force limiters, occupant-related sensors and indicator lights as parts of its system. That list is specific to that vehicle; it is not a universal inventory.
Pretensioners tighten seat belts during a crash, helping restrain occupants. Some systems also use occupant sensors to control whether a passenger airbag is active.

How does the SRS work in a crash?
In general, sensors send information to an electronic control unit, which assesses the crash and signals an airbag inflator when deployment conditions are met. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says an airbag inflates in less than 1/20th of a second. It helps reduce the chance that an occupant’s head or upper body will strike the vehicle interior, working with a properly worn seat belt.
Airbags are generally intended for moderate-to-severe crashes, but they do not deploy in every collision. Whether one deploys can depend on crash speed, the vehicles involved, impact direction, the system’s design strategy and sensor locations. A non-deployment by itself does not prove that the system is defective. If an airbag does not deploy in a crash that causes injury, NHTSA says to report the incident for possible investigation.

What does the SRS warning light mean?
The SRS warning indicator is part of the vehicle’s readiness check. Its normal behavior and the steps to take if it stays on or fails to appear depend on the vehicle; use the instructions in its owner’s manual rather than assuming every model follows the same procedure.
For the U.S. 2023 Honda CR-V, the SRS indicator should light for a few seconds when power mode is turned on, then go out. Honda directs owners to have the vehicle checked by a dealer as soon as possible if the indicator comes on at another time or does not come on during that check. The manual warns that airbags and belt tensioners may not work properly if the issue is ignored.

- Make sure your vehicle's shock absorber springs are hollow.
- The spring with core cannot be installed!
- The spring must be hollow inside to be installed!(If there are rubber bumpers, they must be removed prior to installation and use).
- To determine the dimensions, you need to measure the inner diameter and length of the spring.
If your warning indicator behaves unexpectedly, arrange vehicle-specific diagnosis promptly and follow the manufacturer’s guidance. Do not assume the system is ready simply because the vehicle still drives normally.
Is a passenger-airbag-off light an SRS fault?
Not necessarily. A passenger-airbag-off indicator can show that an advanced system has intentionally deactivated the passenger airbag, rather than signaling a general SRS fault. Depending on the system, it may switch off when the seat is empty or when sensors detect a child, a small-stature occupant or a child restraint.

Seat loading and occupant position can affect some systems. The U.S. 2025 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid manual, for example, describes a front passenger classification system and cautions about posture, seat-belt use and child-restraint conditions. If the status indicator seems wrong, check your own vehicle’s manual and follow its seating and restraint instructions.

- Wear the seat belt. NHTSA describes airbags as supplemental protection designed to work best with seat belts, not replace them.
- Seat children in the back. NHTSA recommends that children under 13 ride in the back seat in an appropriate restraint.
- Keep a safe position from the driver airbag. NHTSA specifies at least 10 inches between the driver airbag cover and the driver’s breastbone. Drivers must still be able to reach the pedals comfortably.
- Follow the manual’s passenger-seat guidance. Occupant-classification systems and their indicators differ among vehicles.
What should you do after an airbag deploys?
A deployed airbag cannot be reused. NHTSA says it must be replaced without delay by an authorized service technician. It also warns that counterfeit or substandard replacement inflators may fail to deploy correctly or expel metal fragments. In a 2024 consumer alert, the agency attributed at least three deaths and two life-altering, disfiguring injuries to faulty aftermarket replacement inflators.
If you are buying or assessing a used vehicle, learn its history and make sure any replacement inflators are genuine. A history check alone cannot establish the condition of the restraint system. Seek a qualified inspection if there has been a deployment or repair, a warning light is present, or the vehicle’s history is undocumented.
When vehicle-specific guidance matters
SRS equipment, passenger-airbag behavior and warning-light instructions can vary by vehicle and model year. The examples above are U.S. owner’s-manual guidance for the named models, not universal instructions. For other vehicles or markets, consult the relevant owner’s manual and local official safety guidance. Check current official vehicle-specific information for recalls, since recall status can change.
