A Tesla using its driver-assistance system hesitated when a road worker directed traffic, according to a video described by Futurism. The driver took control when an oncoming car appeared. The clip shows a reported encounter with a difficult temporary traffic setup—not proof that the system is generally safe or unsafe.
What happened in the video
Futurism reported on June 11, 2024, that Scott Woods, associated with the Whole Mars Catalog account, posted a roughly 20-minute video of a Sunday drive from Sausalito toward San Francisco with FSD engaged. The report says the drive mostly proceeded without intervention until the Tesla encountered a construction worker in bright orange safety gear holding a STOP sign.
As described by Futurism, the Tesla appeared unsure how to proceed. Its steering moved left as if to go around the worker, then the vehicle stopped near the yellow center line while the worker gestured for it to move off the road. When another vehicle came around the curve in the opposite direction, Woods took the steering wheel and moved right to make room. Watch the video.
Futurism also reported that Tesla critic Dan O’Dowd posted the clip on X and wrote, “Elon Musk your defective software should be banned from public roads.” That is O’Dowd’s criticism, not a technical finding or a regulatory determination.

Why directing traffic is a difficult driving situation
A worker with a STOP sign temporarily changes the ordinary flow of traffic. Drivers may need to interpret gestures, stop where directed, wait for a safe opening, and coordinate with vehicles approaching from the other direction. The situation can also leave little space to maneuver, especially near a curve or a center line. A system that normally follows lane markings and traffic rules must respond to a person’s directions and the immediate road context.
Tesla’s Model 3 Owner’s Manual explicitly warns that driver intervention may be required “in certain situations, such as on narrow roads with oncoming cars, in construction zones, or while going through complex intersections.” The manual is for Model 3; Futurism’s account does not identify the model in the video, so the manual is relevant as Tesla safety guidance, not evidence about that vehicle’s exact configuration. FSD is supervised driver assistance, not autonomy
The 2024 report calls the feature “FSD.” Tesla’s current US product name is Full Self-Driving (Supervised). Tesla describes it as a suite of advanced driver-assistance features and says, “None of these advanced driver assistance features make your Tesla vehicle fully autonomous or replace you as the driver.” The company says the driver remains responsible for the vehicle’s speed and control and must stay attentive. Capabilities and availability vary with vehicle configuration, hardware, software version, region, trim, and model year. The name does not transfer responsibility from the person behind the wheel: drivers must be ready to intervene when the system encounters a situation it cannot handle reliably.

What one clip can—and cannot—show
The report describes one incident: a hesitation near a worker directing traffic, followed by the driver taking control when oncoming traffic appeared. It does not establish a system-wide failure rate, crash risk, or performance trend. Nor does the fact that the rest of the drive was described as mostly proceeding without intervention establish that the system is generally dependable. Those broader conclusions require evidence beyond a single reported video.
