Slate Auto’s Slate Truck is a preproduction, two-door electric pickup aimed at buyers who want a small, simple vehicle for local driving and light hauling, then add equipment as their needs change. Slate currently lists a $24,950 base price before a $1,450 destination charge, taxes, fees and options, projects 205 miles of pickup range, and targets first deliveries for late 2026. The company also plans kits that can turn the pickup into several SUV configurations.
What exactly is the Slate Truck?
The Slate Truck is Slate Auto’s first vehicle. In its standard “Blank Slate” form, it is a compact, rear-wheel-drive electric pickup with two doors and two seats. Slate says a customer can choose an SUV body at delivery or convert the pickup later with kits. The company’s published conversion choices include Squareback, Fastback and Open Air SUV versions, while a covered Cargo Kit is planned for pickup users who need weather protection for the bed.

This is not a full-size work truck. Slate’s June 2026 specification sheet lists a 174.6-inch overall length, a 60.5-inch bed, 80.7 inches of bed length with the tailgate down, 35.1 cubic feet of bed volume and a seven-cubic-foot front trunk. Those dimensions put it closer to a city-friendly compact utility vehicle than to a conventional full-size pickup.
The product strategy is modular: buy a basic vehicle, then add hardware or change the body when your circumstances change. Slate CEO Peter Faricy described the idea this way: “Slate gives customers the freedom to buy only what they need today and personalize their vehicle as their needs change tomorrow.” That is the company’s positioning, not evidence of how ownership will work in practice once production vehicles reach customers.

How much does it cost, and when will it arrive?
Slate’s current FAQ lists the Blank Slate at $24,950. A $1,450 destination charge is listed separately, making the known pre-tax, pre-option total $26,400. The advertised price does not include taxes, title, license, registration, government charges, documentation fees or optional equipment. SUV conversion kits, cargo equipment, wheels, interior items and other accessories can raise the final amount.
| Published item | Amount or timing | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Blank Slate base price | $24,950 | Slate’s 2026 listing; before destination, taxes, fees and optional equipment |
| Destination charge | $1,450 | Slate’s 2026 FAQ; separate from the base price |
| Known subtotal | $26,400 | Base price plus destination only; not an out-the-door price |
| Preorder deposit | $300 | Nonrefundable and credited toward the vehicle purchase, according to Slate |
| First deliveries | Late 2026, specified as Q4 2026 in a June 24 release | Company target for a preproduction vehicle, not a completed delivery record |
Slate’s April 2025 launch announcement described an expected price below $20,000 after federal incentives. That was an early expectation. The newer June 2026 published price is the figure to use when evaluating the vehicle today; it is $24,950 before destination and other charges, not a sub-$20,000 transaction price.
Slate says it plans to assemble vehicles in Indiana and describes a repair network. Those are production and service plans, not an established ownership or repair track record. Anyone placing a deposit should treat the delivery date, final equipment list and final pricing as subject to change until production specifications and customer contracts are finalized.

What are the Slate’s size and truck capabilities?
The compact dimensions make the Slate easier to place in an urban garage or a narrow driveway than a large pickup, while still providing an open bed. Slate estimates a 1,550-pound payload for the pickup and a 2,000-pound towing rating. Both are manufacturer estimates for the preproduction vehicle, not independent test results.
| Capability or dimension | Slate’s published figure | What a buyer should check |
|---|---|---|
| Overall length | 174.6 inches | Garage, parking-space and maneuvering clearance |
| Bed length | 60.5 inches | Whether common tools, appliances or recreational gear fit with the tailgate closed |
| Bed length, tailgate down | 80.7 inches | Load overhang, tie-down and local road requirements |
| Bed volume | 35.1 cubic feet | Actual shape of bulky loads, not only volume |
| Front trunk volume | 7 cubic feet | Whether the opening accommodates the items you plan to carry |
| Pickup payload | 1,550 pounds, estimated | Combined weight of passengers, cargo, accessories and tongue weight |
| Pickup tow rating | 2,000 pounds, estimated | Trailer weight, hitch hardware, tongue load, route and charging stops |
Payload is not simply the amount you can put in the bed. People, cargo in the cabin and the trailer’s tongue weight all count against the vehicle’s allowable load. Towing also changes energy consumption substantially, so a trailer that is within the estimated rating may still make a long trip impractical without frequent charging.
What battery, motor, range and charging figures are published?
The June 2026 specification sheet lists a 65-kWh lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery, one 135-kW rear motor and rear-wheel drive. Slate projects 205 miles of pickup range. The company says that number is an approximation based on the EPA test cycle, not an official EPA estimated range.

| Specification | Published value | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Battery chemistry and capacity | 65-kWh LFP | Manufacturer specification for a preproduction vehicle; subject to change |
| Drive motor | Single 135-kW motor | Rear-mounted; final production details may change |
| Drivetrain | Rear-wheel drive | No published all-wheel-drive version in the cited specification |
| Pickup range | 205 miles projected | Approximate manufacturer figure, not an official EPA value |
| Level 2 charging | About four hours from 20% to 100% | Slate estimate; depends on installation and charging conditions |
| Level 3 DC charging | About 30 minutes from 20% to 80% | Slate estimate; actual time depends on charger and battery temperature |
| Charge connector | NACS | Verify the connector and hardware on the final production vehicle |
Temperature, speed, terrain, wind, tire choice, accessories, battery condition, charging behavior and payload all affect an electric vehicle’s usable range. Towing can reduce it further. A driver whose normal trips are local may rarely need the full projected range, while a driver covering long rural routes should wait for independent testing and confirm dependable charging along the route.
What is the cabin like?
The standard cabin is intentionally sparse. Slate says the truck does not include a built-in touchscreen or radio and presents the owner’s phone as the central interface. The company lists phone and speaker accessories, including a speaker holder, rather than conventional integrated infotainment.
That approach can keep standard equipment and the entry price lower, and it lets an owner choose a preferred phone or audio setup. It also means the base vehicle may not satisfy buyers who expect a factory display, built-in navigation, hands-free calling controls, premium audio or the familiar passenger-car interface. Slate’s published material does not establish that Apple CarPlay or Android Auto is built into the truck; prospective buyers should confirm the final connectivity system before ordering.

The two-seat pickup layout is useful for a driver and one passenger, tools or protected equipment behind the seats, and short local trips. It is a poor match for regular family transport unless the buyer selects an SUV conversion that adds rear seating.
How do the pickup and SUV conversions work?
Slate’s concept is to let owners change the vehicle rather than replace it when their needs change. The company says customers may select an SUV body at delivery or convert a pickup later. The named SUV configurations are:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Squareback SUV: a more upright enclosed rear body intended to add passenger and cargo utility.
- Fastback SUV: a sloped-roof alternative with a different exterior profile and likely different cargo compromises.
- Open Air SUV: a more exposed configuration for buyers who prioritize an open cabin experience.
- Covered Cargo Kit: a pickup conversion that encloses the bed area for cargo protection.
The cited material does not provide final prices, installation times, added weight, seating specifications or cargo measurements for each kit. Those missing details matter: a conversion can change range, payload, rear visibility, storage space and the total cost. Treat the ability to convert as a product plan until Slate publishes final kit specifications and ordering terms.

Who is the Slate intended for?
Slate’s own descriptions point to people who drive mostly locally, need a small bed for household or work items, prefer a low listed entry price and want to add equipment gradually. The company also mentions fleets and small businesses in connection with its Cargo Kit. Those are intended use cases, not independent evidence about the eventual buyer population or whether the truck meets a particular fleet’s requirements.
It may fit a local-use owner
- Your daily driving is normally within the vehicle’s practical charging radius.
- You need a bed for gardening supplies, tools, renovation materials, bicycles or similar loads rather than heavy commercial equipment.
- You can charge at home or have reliable Level 2 or DC charging nearby.
- You are comfortable using a phone-centered cabin instead of built-in infotainment.
- You value a simple starting configuration and are willing to price options separately.
It may fit a small business or light-duty fleet
A compact footprint, an estimated 1,550-pound payload and the planned Cargo Kit could appeal to trades, maintenance routes, campus operations or local delivery work. A fleet manager would still need confirmed production payload data, charging logistics, service coverage, uptime expectations, insurance costs and final conversion pricing before approving the vehicle.
Who should wait or choose a different type of vehicle?
- Frequent long-distance drivers: the 205-mile figure is projected and not an official EPA rating; real-world range and charging-stop planning remain unknown.
- Families needing four or more seats immediately: the standard pickup has two seats, and SUV conversion details are not fully published.
- Heavy-duty users: the estimated 2,000-pound tow rating and 1,550-pound payload are far below what many full-size work trucks provide.
- Buyers demanding conventional equipment: the base truck has no built-in touchscreen or radio according to Slate’s description.
- Anyone needing a vehicle now: first deliveries are targeted for late 2026, and the vehicle is still preproduction.
What should you calculate before reserving one?
- Start with the real purchase subtotal. Add the $24,950 base price and $1,450 destination charge, then obtain written figures for taxes, registration, documentation, accessories and any body conversion.
- Match the range to your routine. List your longest normal day, winter or summer conditions, highway speeds, passenger load and likely cargo. Do not use 205 miles as a guaranteed trip distance.
- Confirm charging. Check whether your home electrical service can support the required Level 2 installation, identify public NACS-compatible options and allow for charging time on trips.
- Weigh the actual load. Add passengers, tools, bed cargo, accessories and trailer tongue weight. Compare that total with the final certified payload rather than relying only on the estimate.
- Decide on the body style. Price the two-seat pickup against the SUV or Cargo Kit you would actually use. A low base price is less meaningful if the required kit is essential to your work or family needs.
- Review the reservation terms. Slate says the $300 preorder deposit is nonrefundable but credited toward the purchase. Confirm cancellation, transfer, delivery-window and final-price terms before submitting payment.
- Wait for production evidence if your decision is time-sensitive. Look for final specifications, independent range and charging tests, certified payload and tow data, crash-test results and details of the service network.
What is known about safety and production readiness?
Slate’s FAQ says the vehicle is designed to achieve a five-star U.S. New Car Assessment Program rating. That is a design goal, not a verified crash-test result. No independent production-vehicle crash rating has been established in the available material.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
More than 180,000 reservation holders were reported by Axios in June 2026, but reservations are not completed purchases and do not prove a buyer demographic or guaranteed demand. Personalization can also increase the total cost, so a large reservation count should not be treated as evidence that every customer will buy a fully equipped truck.
The most accurate description today is therefore a planned, modular electric pickup with published targets—not a vehicle with a documented customer-ownership record. Its eventual value will depend on final price, delivery timing, range, charging performance, kit costs, service support and certified capability.
