No—not any truck can use red diesel. In the United Kingdom, red diesel is rebated, chemically marked gas oil for specified uses. Whether a vehicle may use it depends on its legal vehicle category and the task it is doing, not simply on its owner, registration label, or connection to a farm. HMRC’s current Excise Notice 75 guidance should be checked before fueling a particular vehicle.
What is red diesel?
Red diesel is gas oil dyed red and marked with chemical identifiers so authorities can detect fuel sold at a rebated duty rate. HMRC also refers to it as marked diesel or marked gas oil. Road diesel used to propel ordinary road vehicles is commonly called white diesel or DERV.
HMRC describes red diesel as gas oil intended for uses other than fuel in road vehicles. The red marking has been required since 1961, except where a technical marking waiver applies, according to HMRC’s call for evidence.
Can a truck use red diesel?
A goods truck generally cannot use red diesel simply because it carries farm produce, supplies, or equipment, or because it is working for an agricultural business. HMRC says a vehicle designed mainly to carry goods, produce, or implements is a truck rather than an agricultural vehicle. The cargo’s connection to agriculture does not change that classification.

HMRC says a Unimog is, in principle, classed as a truck. It may fit a particular tractor or permanently attached machinery definition only if it meets the detailed requirements for that category. The vehicle’s design and statutory category therefore matter alongside its actual use.
Which vehicles may qualify?
HMRC lists several types of vehicles that may be eligible for red diesel, but appearing on the list is not blanket permission: each category has its own conditions and permitted purposes. Categories include:

- Vehicles designed to operate on a railway.
- Mowing machines.
- Agricultural vehicles.
- Special vehicles.
- Unlicensed vehicles, including vehicles declared off road (SORN).
For agricultural vehicles, qualifying purposes include agriculture, horticulture, aquatic farming, and forestry; cutting verges, hedges, or trees bordering public roads; and certain work connected with frost, ice, snow, or flooding. HMRC also specifies limited qualifying use on private land and on certain golf-course or community amateur sports club land. Why registration alone does not settle eligibility
A DVLA registration description such as “agricultural” or “special” does not by itself prove that a vehicle is entitled to use red diesel. HMRC says the vehicle must fall within the relevant statutory excepted-machine category and be used for an allowed purpose. Check both how the vehicle is constructed or classified and what it is doing when it uses the fuel.

How to check a truck before fueling it
- Identify the vehicle’s design and legal category. Establish whether it is a goods truck or meets the statutory definition of another eligible vehicle type. Do not rely only on its registration description.
- Pin down the specific task and location. Compare what the vehicle will do—and where—with the permitted purposes for its category in HMRC Excise Notice 75.
- Check any exception that may apply. Some vehicles can meet a special definition despite looking like trucks, but they must satisfy the relevant detailed conditions.
- Use the correct fuel if the conditions are not met. If the vehicle or activity does not qualify, do not treat farm ownership, farm-related cargo, or an “agricultural” registration label as permission to use rebated fuel.
What changed in 2022?
From 1 April 2022, the UK government removed red-diesel entitlement from most sectors while retaining specified uses, including agriculture, horticulture, forestry, fish farming, rail, and non-commercial heating. As a result, older advice that describes general construction or industrial use as eligible may no longer reflect the rules. The applicable category and purpose still need to be checked against HMRC’s current guidance.
There is an additional road-use issue for agricultural vehicles: HMRC says fuel used while an agricultural vehicle is on a public road for a purpose outside the listed qualifying purposes must bear duty. Eligibility can therefore depend on what the vehicle is doing on a particular road journey, not only on its normal work or where it is based. Does this apply outside the UK?
No general conclusion about other countries follows from these rules. This article describes UK fuel-duty rules; dyed-fuel definitions and permitted uses differ by jurisdiction. Check the relevant local authority’s rules if the vehicle will be used outside the UK.
