What NASCAR is
NASCAR organizes stock car racing in North America. Its national series include the NASCAR Cup Series, the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series and the Craftsman Truck Series. The Cup Series is NASCAR’s top tier; each series has its own championship and its own Chase field and schedule.
For a first-time viewer, the essential idea is straightforward: drivers compete in races, earn points, and pursue a season championship. Race dates, venues, results and standings are season-specific, so check NASCAR’s official schedule and standings pages for the latest event information.
How the 2026 championships work
NASCAR replaced its previous elimination-style championship format with a revised Chase for the 2026 season. A driver’s regular-season points determine whether they reach the Chase; winning a race does not automatically qualify a driver. Each series has one points reset at the start of its Chase. After that, drivers continue accumulating points, and the driver with the most points at the end of the series season becomes champion.

There are no round-by-round eliminations, no carryover of playoff points, and no one-race, winner-take-all title decider in the 2026 format. The Cup Chase covers the final 10 races of a 36-race season.

These are separate championships, not a single combined playoff. The field size and number of Chase races differ by series.

How the Cup points reset works
At the start of the 2026 Cup Chase, points reset according to regular-season seeding. The top seed starts with 2,100 points and the second seed with 2,075; the regular-season champion’s 25-point advantage over the second seed rewards performance across the regular season. The third seed starts at 2,065, then each subsequent seed starts five points below the seed above it.
A Cup race win is worth 55 points in 2026, 15 more than under the preceding system. NASCAR said other finishing-position and stage-result awards remained the same as under that earlier system. What changed from the previous championship format
The main change is how the championship field is selected and how the title is decided. Under the 2026 rules, regular-season points—not an automatic berth from winning a race—determine who qualifies. Once the Chase begins, points are reset once; drivers are not eliminated in successive rounds. The season’s points leader wins the championship, rather than the result of a single finale race deciding the title.
NASCAR president Steve O’Donnell described the goal as rewarding consistency across the 36-race Cup season while ensuring that winning matters. The format and points figures in this section are specific to 2026; they should not be treated as rules for earlier or later seasons without checking that season’s official announcement.
