INNengine’s “1 Stroke” is the company’s name for an unconventional internal-combustion engine architecture. INNengine says it produces two power events per cylinder per revolution, using an axial layout and cam-based motion conversion rather than a typical crankshaft-and-valvetrain arrangement. Its e-REX and REX-B are promoted for range-extender, generator and other compact-power roles—but published performance figures remain company claims, not independently established comparisons.
What does “one-stroke” mean?
INNengine uses “1 Stroke” as a brand name for its claimed power-event frequency. The company says each cylinder has two power events per revolution. That description explains the headline, but the label alone does not determine how the design should be classified using conventional engine-cycle terminology.
In a conventional four-stroke engine, a piston completes intake, compression, power and exhaust strokes over two crankshaft revolutions. A two-stroke design completes the cycle over one revolution, with processes coordinated differently. INNengine’s phrase should not be read to mean that its engine skips the processes of intake, compression, combustion or exhaust. It describes the company’s account of power-event frequency, not a substitute for a full technical cycle analysis.
Terminology in other sources underscores the need for precision. A 2021 peer-reviewed paper indexed by the University of Valencia describes an INNengine design as a two-stroke, rodless opposed-piston engine for plug-in hybrid applications. A 2025 University of East Anglia thesis search result similarly describes the REX-B as two-stroke on a cylinder-by-cylinder basis. Those descriptions are useful context, but the underlying full texts were not available for detailed verification here. The 2021 Applied Energy paper and the UEA thesis record should therefore be read as terminology leads, not as a definitive adjudication of the company’s branding.

How is the engine designed?
INNengine describes its platform as an axial engine: its product material emphasizes a compact arrangement rather than the familiar in-line or V layout of cylinders around a conventional crankshaft. The company also points to fewer conventional components as an architectural advantage.
The patent publication provides a technical description of the mechanism, including a combustion chamber, compression chamber, piston assembly and cam-based motion conversion. That helps explain how the design differs mechanically from a standard crank-and-valvetrain engine; a patent describes an invention and does not, by itself, validate performance, durability or commercial readiness. What are e-REX and REX-B for?
INNengine presents two named concepts and several possible application families. These are promoted uses, not evidence that the products are in mass production or widely deployed.

Is the INNengine e-REX available to buy?
INNengine describes itself as an independent propulsion intellectual-property company that develops, validates and licenses its platform rather than manufacturing end products for direct-to-market sale. It says technical disclosure packages and support are available to qualified industrial partners under NDA. The commercial route described on its current pages is therefore B2B licensing and integration; a general retail purchase path was not established.
The company says its development and validation work has involved modelling, prototype runs and third-party technical review, but the reviewed platform page does not provide underlying reports or test data. Older product material says e-REX reached TRL 6 after testing and powering a demonstration car. That historical company statement does not establish a currently audited readiness level, certification, production status or ongoing deployment. INNengine’s homepage sets out its current licensing-led position.

INNengine’s product page publishes the following specifications and comparisons. They are company statements; the reviewed material does not provide independent, matched test results establishing them against a defined alternative.

How should it be compared with a conventional engine?
A fair comparison needs the same application, operating range and duty cycle—not just a headline power figure or a claimed percentage. For a range extender, the relevant comparison is between systems delivering equivalent electrical output and operating conditions, including the generator and integration hardware where applicable.
- Architecture and power events: compare the operating cycle and power events per shaft revolution, not just the “one-stroke” label.
- Output: compare power and torque across the usable operating range, rather than a single peak number.
- Installed package: use package volume and installed mass on equivalent system boundaries.
- Efficiency and emissions: compare fuel consumption and emissions at matched output and duty cycle.
- Vibration: require measurements taken under defined conditions and instrumentation.
- Ownership and deployment: compare durability, service needs, certification, integration cost and maturity of production availability.
The material available from INNengine does not provide enough independent, apples-to-apples data to rank the platform against conventional engines or other range extenders on these measures.
