Ford’s SupportBelt is a soft, contoured foam accessory that attaches to a vehicle’s shoulder seatbelt to help reduce chest pressure and discomfort after mastectomy. What is the Ford SupportBelt?
SupportBelt is a breathable, contoured foam accessory that fastens to a seatbelt. Ford developed it to cushion the shoulder-belt area for mastectomy patients who find ordinary belt pressure uncomfortable during travel. The benefit described here is Ford’s intended use for the product, not a quantified clinical finding.
Why did Ford develop it?
Ford’s 2024 account traces the idea to Lynn Simoncini, a creative director at VML who had a double mastectomy in 2022. She found seatbelt pressure painful during recovery, sketched a possible solution and brought the idea to Ford. Ford says it developed SupportBelt with input from patients and doctors.
Ford’s article estimated that about 100,000 women and men in the United States undergo mastectomy each year, attributing that figure to Ford in 2024. It did not identify the underlying statistical source in the article, so the estimate should not be treated as a newly verified current total. Ford also quoted breast surgeon Dr. Nayana Dekhne of Corewell Health saying that residual pain and sensitivity can last for months after surgery; that observation provides context, not evidence of SupportBelt’s effectiveness.

Who should use it, and where does it go?
Ford’s stated restrictions are central to whether the accessory is appropriate. It is intended for mastectomy patients and for use with the shoulder portion of the seatbelt only.
- Use it only in Ford or Lincoln vehicles, consistent with Ford’s stated vehicle-specification restriction.
- Attach it for shoulder-belt use only; do not use it on the lap portion of the belt.
- Do not use it for children or with a child seat or booster seat.
- Do not treat it as a universal seatbelt pad: Ford has not established that it is validated for other makes or models.
Ford says it intends to make the design available to other automakers through licensing so they can manufacture and test it in their vehicles. That plan does not mean the accessory has been validated for those vehicles. Ford’s published description also does not establish a clinical effectiveness measure, such as a percentage reduction in pain.

Is a generic seatbelt cushion an equivalent?
The available product information does not support treating generic comfort pads as equivalent to SupportBelt or as validated for this use. Ford’s stated vehicle and placement restrictions apply to SupportBelt; its description does not establish that another accessory has the same design, testing or suitability. Do not change seatbelt placement based on an assumption that a cushion is interchangeable.
