The engine switches operating modes rather than permanently changing its size. The goal is to improve fuel efficiency during lighter-load driving, but the result varies by vehicle, engine and conditions.
How does cylinder deactivation work?
When the engine is producing less power than it can, its control system can stop fuel delivery to selected cylinders and deactivate their valve operation. The remaining cylinders continue to power the vehicle. When demand rises, the system can bring the inactive cylinders back into operation.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) describes the effect as temporarily making an eight- or six-cylinder engine operate like a four- or three-cylinder engine. In systems described by Natural Resources Canada, inactive cylinders can have their intake and exhaust valves kept closed. The precise controls and hardware depend on the engine.
Why use it—and what determines the benefit?
At light loads, a large engine may not need all its cylinders to produce the requested power. Deactivation is intended to improve efficiency in those conditions. It does not guarantee a particular fuel-economy improvement: the realized benefit depends in part on how often the vehicle can use the mode. Test cycle, engine size, vehicle weight, and noise, vibration and harshness constraints also matter, according to an SAE paper on variable displacement.
#1 Best Overall
The EPA reported that cylinder deactivation was present in almost 17% of gasoline vehicles in model year 2021. This is a historical deployment figure, not an estimate for 2026 and not a prediction of an individual driver’s fuel savings.
Are all cylinder-deactivation systems the same?
No. Cylinder deactivation is also called variable displacement, and automakers use system names such as GM Active Fuel Management and Dynamic Fuel Management. The names do not imply identical operating strategies or hardware.
For example, a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 service document describes Dynamic Fuel Management as deactivating different combinations of cylinder valves and identifies electrically operated electro-hydraulic valve-lifter solenoids for that application. Those details apply to the documented Silverado system, not to every vehicle with cylinder deactivation.

Do not use the presence of cylinder deactivation alone to predict which vehicle will be more efficient or reliable. Compare the specific vehicles and engines using the same model year and market, and check:

General evidence about the technology does not establish a universal long-term reliability advantage or disadvantage. A reliability assessment needs evidence for the named engine and model years in question.
