ASA Motion Link (ASA-ML) is an automotive serializer/deserializer (SerDes) technology for carrying camera, lidar, radar, display and control data between vehicle devices and computing systems. Its asymmetric link sends high-rate data toward the vehicle computer and lower-rate data back toward the sensor. NXP’s overview lists downstream line rates of 2–16 Gbps and upstream rates of 50 or 100 Mbps, with different maximum cable reaches for coax and shielded twisted pair.
How ASA Motion Link connects a sensor to a vehicle computer
An ASA-ML connection typically pairs a serializer near a camera or other sensor with a deserializer near an application processor. The serializer takes incoming sensor data—commonly MIPI CSI-2 video—and control signals such as I²C, UART or GPIO, and sends them over a high-speed serial link. At the receiving end, the deserializer reconstructs the data for the processor.
The connection is asymmetric: its high-speed downstream direction carries the sensor payload toward the compute system, while the lower-speed upstream direction can carry commands and control information back. The specific interfaces, port counts and supported data rates depend on the selected chips; ASA-ML describes a link technology, not one fixed camera-system configuration.
Rates and cable reach
NXP’s product overview lists the following ASA-ML link rates and cable limits. These are figures from that overview, not a guarantee that every device, cable assembly or vehicle installation supports every combination.

| Link characteristic | NXP overview figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Downstream line rate | 2, 4, 8, 12 or 16 Gbps | Listed rates; supported options depend on the implementation. |
| Upstream rate | 50 or 100 Mbps | Listed return-link rates. |
| 50-ohm coax reach | Up to 15 m | Maximum stated by NXP; actual reach depends on the design and cable. |
| 100-ohm shielded twisted-pair (STP) reach | Up to 10 m | Maximum stated by NXP; actual reach depends on the design and cable. |
The overview identifies the cable impedance and reach but does not state power-delivery capability in the cited material. Do not assume that a particular coax or STP link supplies power to a sensor without checking the chosen device and cable specification.
What ASA-ML adds to the automotive connectivity landscape
The Automotive SerDes Alliance released specification v1.01 in December 2020. The alliance later describes v2.0 as adding asymmetric Ethernet and v2.1 as adding native MIPI CSI-2 transport. Those revision descriptions indicate evolving capabilities; they should not be read as proof that any particular chip implements every feature or revision.

- ▶DC 2.5mm 6.5ft cable. If the rear camera cable coming with your the dash cam kit is too short, this backup camera extension cord is a great accessory for dash cam mirror cam backup camera, it will help you to complete the installation successfully.
- ▶Please choose the appropriate rear view camera extension wire, 3 connector types: 4 Pin male to female, 5 Pin male to female, 2.5mm end male to female. Each kind of dash cam extension cables has different length: 6.5ft, 10ft, 16.5ft.
- ▶Our dash cam extension wires adopt thick pure copper core, diameter 3.5mm. After back up camera cable extension, it may appear voltage drop, image on the screen has stripes, flickering, etc., please don't choose thin reverse camera cables, and Stability is not high, our extender cable is thicker, and it has better stability.
- ▶ 2.5mm Male to Female extension cord is universal for 4pin/5pin rear camera of dash cam and mirror cam. However, because the internal structure of the 4 needles is different, there may be a few cases where they do not work.
- ▶ Every dash cam extension cord goes through test, if it does not fit your rear view camera, please let us know, and we will provide you with a suitable backup camera cable for free, or refund.
On 9 August 2023, MIPI Alliance and ASA announced a liaison intended to create a path for using MIPI Camera Serial Interface 2 directly, or natively, with the ASA-ML physical layer. The stated application areas include ADAS, autonomous driving and in-vehicle infotainment. That standards relationship concerns interface interoperability; it does not by itself establish that a given camera, processor and SerDes pair are compatible.

NXP AVL1402XX
NXP lists the AVL1402XX with four firmware-configurable ASA ports, dual CSI-2 interfaces and line rates from 2 to 16 Gbit/s. NXP describes link authentication, encryption and integrity checks, along with a three-level key-exchange entity, secure boot, safety monitors and built-in self-test. NXP marks the part as preproduction, so availability and specifications may change; confirm the status and revision directly with NXP before designing around it.

Microchip VS775S and VS776
Microchip describes the VS776 as a hub/deserializer that can receive sensor data from as many as four VS775S serializers. The VS776 provides two MIPI CSI-2 outputs and multiple bidirectional control channels. Microchip also documents forward error correction (FEC), ASAsec hardware authentication and encryption, and link-monitoring functions for this device family.
These examples show why product-level comparison matters: port topology, CSI-2 connections, control paths and security features are implementation details, not properties to assume across all ASA-ML equipment. Security capabilities also differ by chip; verify supported modes, provisioning and key-management requirements for the intended system.

How to compare ASA-ML implementations
For a camera or sensor design, compare the full signal path rather than choosing on maximum line rate alone. The product documentation from NXP and Microchip highlights several decision points:
- Data rates in both directions: Confirm that the downstream rate meets the sensor payload requirement and that the upstream channel supports the required controls.
- Cable and reach: Check coax versus STP, cable impedance, installed length and any power-delivery needs against the selected hardware specifications.
- Ports and topology: Establish how many sensor-side links the design needs, which ends transmit or receive, and whether a hub or direct link is appropriate.
- Camera interface: Verify the required MIPI CSI-2 mode and physical-layer support, including whether the device documentation specifies D-PHY or C-PHY.
- Control, synchronization and diagnostics: Check the available control channels, timing synchronization features, link monitoring, safety diagnostics and built-in test coverage.
- Security and key management: Confirm which authentication, encryption and integrity functions the exact part supports, and how keys are provisioned and managed.
- Device readiness: Review package, temperature grade, production status and the applicable data-sheet revision before committing to a design.
- Validation support: Determine whether the chosen implementation and test setup support the relevant ASA compliance checks.
Testing and the ASA ecosystem
Teledyne LeCroy’s QPHY2-ASA automates ASA Motion Link PMA compliance, validation and testing. A compliance tool can support measurement and validation work, but its availability does not establish that a specific product configuration has passed testing; check the applicable test requirements and results for the implementation.
