An RWB Porsche is a customized Porsche 911 built under Rauh-Welt Begriff (RWB), the Japanese tuning identity founded by Akira Nakai. It is not a factory Porsche model or trim. RWB cars are recognized for dramatically widened fenders, deep-dish wheels, prominent rear wings and visible fasteners, but every conversion is individually specified and finished rather than produced to one uniform specification.
What does RWB stand for?
RWB is short for Rauh-Welt Begriff. English-language RWB pages and automotive coverage commonly render the name as “Rough World Concept.” That is a loose English interpretation, not a precise word-for-word translation; the German components can support more than one English rendering.

The identity is associated with Akira Nakai, a Japanese Porsche tuner whose workshop is in Kashiwa, Chiba. MotorTrend’s 2023 history reports that Nakai encountered Porsche cars while working at a body shop, then modified a 930-series 911 for himself. He named that car Stella Artois, an early step in the style that became RWB. MotorTrend also reports an approximate 1997 founding year for RWB; that year is historical reporting rather than a date confirmed here by a company-registration record.
RWB’s own biography attributes two statements to Nakai that explain the philosophy behind the work. He says, “The Porsche car itself is in great appearance and performance, while I am just expanding its potential and manufacturability.” The same page attributes this description of ownership and individuality to him: “Every car has its own soul, half born with innate and half given by its owner. Therefore, all the Porsche that I have tuned with my own hands are given by the owners.” No interview date or setting is supplied for either quotation.

What makes an RWB Porsche different?
A widebody silhouette
The signature change is the body. RWB conversions use broad overfenders that push the visual width of the 911 far beyond its original shape. The arches are normally paired with wheels carrying a pronounced deep-dish profile, so the tires sit close to the new outer edges. Bumpers and side details may be reshaped to meet the wider body, and the finished car often has a large rear wing.
Visible hardware and an intentionally dramatic finish
Exposed rivets or other fasteners are part of the visual language. Rather than hiding every seam as a factory body panel would, the conversion can make the attachment of the overfenders obvious. Paint, graphics, wheel choice and interior treatment vary from car to car. The result is deliberately dramatic and polarizing: some enthusiasts value the unmistakable silhouette, while others prefer the restrained proportions of an unmodified 911.
A build identified with Nakai’s hands-on work
RWB USA describes its kits as made in Japan and hand built, and says customers choose a build, order the kit and set a build date. The RWB UK FAQ says the work is completed by Nakai-san, generally at a regional partner’s location, so the car does not necessarily have to be shipped to Japan. That hands-on process is central to the RWB identity; simply fitting a similar-looking universal widebody kit does not establish that a car is an RWB build.

How an RWB conversion is carried out
Exact arrangements differ by region and car, but the published descriptions support this general sequence. A prospective owner should confirm the details with an authorized regional partner before committing money or transport.
- Select and inspect the 911. Start with the exact generation, body style, engine configuration and condition of the Porsche. Rust, accident repairs, corrosion, worn suspension pick-up points and incomplete maintenance can all affect whether the shell is a sensible foundation. An RWB exterior does not repair a weak underlying car.
- Discuss the specification. The owner and partner establish the body kit for that model, the desired wheel and tire package, suspension work, wing, paint and any graphics. Because builds are individualized, two cars carrying the RWB identity can have different equipment and finishes.
- Order the model-specific parts and request a build slot. RWB USA describes kits made in Japan. RWB UK says allocation timing on its partner page can range from six months to two years before a slot is assigned. That figure is partner-specific and volatile, not a current worldwide promise.
- Prepare and mock up the body. The original car is measured and the new panels are positioned. Creating the wide stance normally involves irreversible cutting and drilling of the body, followed by fitting the overfenders and related bumper or sill pieces. The exact cutting pattern depends on the 911 generation and the kit.
- Complete bodywork and paint. Once the panels, clearances and fasteners are established, the car receives the chosen bodywork finish. Paint preparation, paint and final alignment are separate parts of the project and should be itemized in a written estimate.
- Set the rolling hardware. Wheels, tires, ride height and suspension settings must work together with the new arches. MotorTrend’s April 2023 cost discussion treated suspension and wheels as a substantial additional expense, not as part of the basic body-kit price.
- Document and inspect the finished car. Keep invoices, photographs of the work, kit identifiers, alignment records and the builder’s confirmation. Those records matter later if the car is sold or if an insurer, inspection authority or repair shop needs to understand what was changed.
Which Porsche 911s can receive an RWB conversion?
RWB UK lists the following 911 families as eligible on its page represented in the available material. The list is not a permanent global catalog, and the sources do not agree perfectly: MotorTrend’s 2023 article discusses 930, 964, 993 and 997 candidates, while the UK list also includes 996. Ask a regional partner about the exact year, body style and kit before buying a donor car.

RWB UK states that its body kits are model-specific and cannot be interchanged. A 964 kit should therefore not be treated as a bolt-on option for a 993, even if the cars look related in photographs. Eligibility can also change as partners update their programs.

How much does an RWB Porsche cost?
There is no current official universal price for a completed RWB Porsche. The clearest published figures are dated estimates that must be read with their exclusions.

The $24,000 figure is not a drive-away price. A realistic budget must also account for the donor 911, transportation, taxes or import costs, metal and fiberglass preparation, paint, wheels and tires, suspension, brakes, engine or gearbox work, alignment, registration and insurance. None of those items has one globally authoritative RWB price.
How to tell whether a used car is genuinely an RWB
RWB UK warns that not every car described in advertisements as “RWB” was formed by Nakai-san. A similar body kit, an RWB-style paint scheme or a seller’s wording is not proof of provenance.

- Request build evidence. Look for invoices, photographs showing the work in progress, kit documentation, the build location and correspondence with a regional partner.
- Confirm the builder. Ask an authorized regional RWB partner to verify the car’s identity and whether the conversion is recorded in its history. Get that confirmation in writing where possible.
- Check the original Porsche. Obtain a vehicle-history report and inspect the chassis, suspension mounts, floors, engine, gearbox, cooling system and electrical work. Accident damage or corrosion can be hidden beneath a widebody conversion.
- Inspect fit and finish. Check panel alignment, fastener spacing, tire clearance at full steering lock and compression, paint edges, water management and signs of cracking around cut areas. These observations do not prove authenticity, but they can reveal poor workmanship.
- Match the paperwork to the car. The VIN, engine and gearbox numbers, photographs, receipts and stated generation should agree. A car that changed color or body style without records deserves additional scrutiny.
Because each build is individualized, there is no single factory-style options sheet that can authenticate every car. Provenance and the condition of the underlying 911 are more useful than a seller’s claimed rarity.

An RWB conversion changes the 911’s exterior dimensions and can change its suspension, wheel, tire and alignment setup. Those changes may affect parking clearance, tire replacement, ride comfort, steering feel, road noise and access to ordinary repair facilities. The actual result depends on the chosen parts and settings; the published sources do not establish a standardized performance gain or a single handling specification.

Use also matters. A show-focused car may prioritize stance, paint and graphics, while a road or track car needs careful attention to tire clearance, cooling, braking, alignment and service access. Before approving the build, tell the partner how the car will be used and what roads or events it must tolerate. A widebody conversion is irreversible enough that appearance alone should not determine the specification.

There is no standardized RWB acceleration, horsepower or lap-time figure to use as a universal comparison. The identity is primarily a design and build process, not a factory performance class.
RWB collectibles and scale models
If you want an RWB Porsche in miniature rather than a full-size conversion, Mattel has documented an RLC Exclusive RWB Porsche 930 die-cast model packaged with an Akira Nakai figurine. The product page showed the item as sold out when accessed. It is a collectible model, not a real Porsche and not a full-size RWB body kit.
RWB-related catalogs also list scale models, clothing, posters and books. Availability, authenticity and licensing vary by seller. A miniature should be evaluated as merchandise, with attention to the exact scale, edition and current stock, rather than treated as evidence that a full-size car has been converted.

- Is my exact year and body style currently accepted by this regional partner?
- Which parts are included in the quoted kit price, and which labor, paint, shipping and taxes are separate?
- Who will perform the work, where will it occur and how is the build slot scheduled?
- What suspension, wheel, tire and brake specifications are recommended for my intended use?
- How will irreversible cutting, corrosion repair and future maintenance be handled?
- What documents will I receive to prove the car’s provenance to a future buyer or insurer?
- Which inspections, registration changes and insurance disclosures are required in my jurisdiction?
Those answers are more valuable than a generic internet price because RWB builds are tied to a particular chassis, partner, country and owner specification.
