An FIA Super Licence is the credential a driver must hold to compete in the Formula 1 World Championship. For a first application under the 2026 FIA rules, the normal route requires a current International Grade A licence, a minimum age of 18 at the start of the driver’s first F1 competition, completion of the FIA’s knowledge requirements, at least 80% of each of two full seasons in eligible championships, and at least 40 Super Licence points. The FIA may approve a 17-year-old only in a narrow discretionary exception for a driver who has recently and consistently shown exceptional ability and maturity in single-seater racing.
What the FIA Super Licence does
The Super Licence is the FIA’s top-level driver licence for circuit racing. An F1 team may sign a driver, and a driver may test an F1 car, without immediately being eligible to start a World Championship race; the driver must satisfy the Super Licence rules before entering an F1 competition.

It is not a single exam or a qualification awarded solely for winning one series. The FIA combines age, licence class, sporting knowledge, recent race participation and results in approved championships. The points total is the best-known part of the process, but 40 points alone does not guarantee approval.

The standard first-application threshold is at least 40 Super Licence points. The FIA does not add every result from a driver’s entire career. Instead, it calculates the driver’s eligible points in two different time windows and uses the higher total:

- The two calendar years immediately before the application year, plus points earned during the application year.
For an application made in 2026, the FIA would compare the driver’s eligible total from 2023–2025 with the total from 2024–2026. The governing document and its current Supplement 1 table determine which results count and how many points each result earns.
This rolling-window method matters when a driver’s strongest season is the current one. It can also prevent an old result from carrying indefinitely: once a result falls outside both available windows, it no longer helps that application.
Current Super Licence points by championship
The following is a readable summary of the currently published top-three values. The FIA’s Appendix L, Supplement 1 remains controlling for exact series definitions, licence conditions, class names and later amendments. Older guides can therefore show different categories or values.
| Championship or category | 1st | 2nd | 3rd |
|---|---|---|---|
| FIA Formula 2 | 40 | 40 | 40 |
| IndyCar | 40 | 30 | 20 |
| FIA Formula 3 | 30 | 25 | 20 |
| FIA Formula E | 30 | 25 | 20 |
| Japanese Super Formula | 30 | 25 | 20 |
| FIA WEC Hypercar | 30 | 24 | 20 |
| Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine | 25 | 20 | 15 |
| Japanese Super GT500 | 20 | 16 | 12 |
| Formula Regional Middle East, Americas, Japanese, Oceania and Indian | 18 | 14 | 12 |
| International Supercars, NASCAR Cup, Indy Lights, Euroformula Open and Japanese Super Formula Lights | 15 | 12 | 10 |
| National FIA Formula 4 and FIA WEC LMGT3 | 12 | 10 | 7 |
| Asian/ELMS/IMSA LMP2, F1 Academy, Indy Pro 2000, GB3, NASCAR National and Toyota Racing Series New Zealand | 10 | 7 | 5 |
| International GT3, Japanese Super GT300 and DTM | 6 | 4 | 2 |
| FIA karting senior world championship | 4 | 3 | 2 |
| FIA karting senior continental or junior world championship | 3 | 2 | 1 |
| FIA karting junior continental championship | 2 | 1 | 0 |
In the 10/7/5 category, F1 Academy is listed with the same top-three values in the current summary. A championship title therefore does not have a universal value: a Formula 2, IndyCar or Formula 3 title produces a different result from a title in a lower-ranked or differently classified series.
Why Formula 2 is the most direct route
FIA Formula 2 is the clearest ladder to F1 under the current table. First, second and third in the championship each receive 40 points, so any of those positions reaches the points threshold in a single season if the driver also meets the other eligibility requirements. The equal value for the top three is unusual and should not be generalized to other championships.

Other established single-seater routes can require more than one season. A Formula 3, Formula E or Japanese Super Formula champion receives 30 points, leaving 10 points to earn through another eligible result, a bonus or a combination of seasons. A driver finishing second in one of those championships receives 25; third receives 20.
IndyCar is another potential one-season route for its champion, who receives 40 points. Second and third receive 30 and 20 respectively. Endurance and touring-car results can contribute, but their values and eligibility depend on the specific class and championship listed in Supplement 1.
Additional ways a driver can earn points
Clean-season bonus
A driver who completes a qualifying FIA championship without receiving penalty points can receive two bonus points. The bonus depends on the applicable championship and licence status, so the FIA’s current conditions must be checked when calculating an application.
Formula Regional World Cup
The winner of the FIA Formula Regional World Cup can receive three additional points in the same calendar year. These points supplement, rather than replace, the points awarded for the driver’s championship results.
Free-practice mileage
A driver holding a Free Practice Only Super Licence can earn one point for each F1 event at which the driver completes at least 100 kilometres in a free-practice session without receiving penalty points. No more than 10 of these points can be considered for a later application. The mileage provision is therefore a limited supplement, not an alternative to the main junior-series pathway.

Every first-time applicant requirement
International Grade A licence
The applicant must hold a current FIA International Grade A licence. A national licence or a lower international grade is not enough for a standard first Super Licence application.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMinimum age
Article 13.1.2 of the FIA Appendix L states: “The driver must be at least 18 years old at the start of the event of his first F1 competition.” The relevant date is the beginning of that first F1 competition, not necessarily the date on which a contract is signed or a test is completed.
The narrow age-17 exception
The FIA may, at its sole discretion, grant a Super Licence at 17 to a driver who has “recently and consistently demonstrated outstanding ability and maturity in single-seater formula car competition.” This is an exception, not an automatic youth category. It does not waive the points, licence, knowledge or season-completion requirements; it only allows the FIA to depart from the normal age minimum when it judges the driver’s ability and maturity exceptional.
Knowledge session
A first applicant must successfully complete the FIA’s question session covering key parts of the International Sporting Code and the F1 Sporting Regulations. The points total cannot substitute for this rules knowledge requirement.
Two substantially completed seasons
The driver must have completed at least 80% of each of two full seasons in eligible single-seater championships listed in Supplement 1. A driver who has enough points but has not completed the required proportion of two seasons can still be ineligible for a first licence.

Does winning F2 automatically qualify a driver?
No. Winning F2 supplies 40 points under the current table, but the FIA still checks the rest of the application. The same is true of second- and third-place F2 finishers: each receives 40 points, yet each must satisfy the age, Grade A, knowledge-session and two-season participation rules.
“Automatic qualification” is also misleading because the points window, the exact championship classification and any applicable notes in Supplement 1 must be verified for the year of application. A result that appears similar in an older table may carry a different value or be treated under a revised series definition.
How the FIA evaluates the points window
- Identify the application year. This determines which two rolling windows are available.
- List eligible results. Use the championship and class definitions in the current Supplement 1, not a historic points chart.
- Apply the published value for each result. Include only points the table permits for that series, licence status and season.
- Add permitted bonuses. Check the clean-season, Formula Regional World Cup and Free Practice Only provisions separately.
- Calculate both windows. Compare the three-year total with the two-prior-years-plus-application-year total.
- Use the higher total. The result must be at least 40, and all non-points requirements must also be satisfied.
For example, a driver applying during 2026 compares 2023–2025 against 2024–2026. The rule does not promise that the second window will be higher: that depends on the driver’s actual results and any points earned during 2026.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What happens after a driver has a Super Licence?
The licence remains an operating condition of competing in F1. Under the 2026 F1 General Regulatory Provisions, stewards may award Super Licence penalty points for penalties other than a reprimand or a fine.
- Penalty points remain on the licence for 12 months from the date they are imposed.
- When a driver reaches 12 points, the driver is suspended from the next Competition.
- After that suspension is served, the 12 points are removed.
- If the driver does not reach the suspension threshold, each set of points is removed on its 12-month anniversary.
The suspension is separate from grid penalties, time penalties or fines imposed for an individual incident. A driver can therefore face an immediate sporting penalty and accumulate licence points at the same time, depending on the stewards’ decision.

Renewing a licence after leaving F1
A driver who last held a Super Licence within the previous three years may be considered for renewal under FIA discretion. For that return application, the team must demonstrate at least 300 kilometres at racing speeds in a representative F1 car over no more than two days.
The running must have taken place no more than 180 days before the application. It must be certified by the relevant national sporting authority, or it may be completed during an F1 World Championship event. This renewal route is distinct from the normal first-application process and does not mean that every former F1 driver can return without review.
Common mistakes when checking a driver’s eligibility
- Counting career points forever: only the two FIA-defined windows are compared.
- Assuming every championship win is worth 40: that is true for the current top three in F2 and for an IndyCar champion, not for most series.
- Ignoring series classes: WEC Hypercar, LMGT3 and LMP2 have different values.
- Treating a test as a race qualification: Free Practice Only points are capped and do not replace the main requirements.
- Using an old chart: championship names and categories can change, so Supplement 1 for the relevant year controls.
- Forgetting participation percentages: reaching 40 points does not cure a failure to complete 80% of each of two required seasons.
- Confusing a team seat with permission to race: contractual selection and FIA licence approval are separate steps.
The practical answer for an aspiring F1 driver
Plan around a recognised single-seater championship, preserve a record of completed race weekends, and calculate points against the current FIA table before signing an F1 contract. The fastest conventional route is a top-three F2 finish, because each of those positions currently supplies 40 points. Drivers coming through F3, Formula Regional, Formula E, IndyCar or another category may need multiple seasons or permitted bonuses.

Before applying, the driver should be able to document a current Grade A licence, the two-season 80% participation requirement, the rules knowledge session and the correct age status. The FIA then makes the licensing decision using the applicable Appendix L provisions; a points total is necessary, but it is only one part of the complete test.
