What is Alcantara made of?
Alcantara S.p.A. identifies Alcantara® as its registered trademark and describes the material as the result of proprietary technology. Its stated composition is 68% polyester and 32% polyurethane, according to the company’s material information.
“Suede-like” describes its appearance and feel; it does not mean the material is animal suede. SEAT likewise describes it as similar to suede in its car-terms glossary.
Why do sports-car makers use Alcantara?
The appeal is a mix of tactile feel, function and interior design. Alcantara’s Sustainability Report 2024–2025 cites grip, breathability and durability as useful in sporty driving, along with lightness and customization. Maserati’s MC20 press material similarly points to breathability, wear resistance, low weight and adherence in areas where performance and comfort matter.

When was Alcantara first used in a car?
Alcantara says its first automotive application was the Lamborghini Bravo concept, designed by Bertone, in 1974. The company’s history separately identifies the Lancia Stratos HF as the first production car to use the material. These are distinct milestones: the Bravo was a concept, while the Stratos HF was a production car. Alcantara S.p.A. was founded in 1972.
How do you clean an Alcantara car seat?
For routine cleaning, Alcantara advises wiping the seat with a soft, slightly damp cloth. For more thorough cleaning, it recommends water and mild soap. Avoid harsh solvents and alcohol-based products, and follow the vehicle maker’s care instructions for the specific trim. The cited company information does not give a quantified service life or a controlled wear comparison with leather. If trim is badly worn or damaged, an automotive upholstery specialist may be able to assess it.
Does Alcantara contain recycled material?
Not necessarily in a single, uniform proportion. Alcantara’s Sustainability Report 2024–2025 says an increasing number of automotive manufacturers adopted a special version made from recycled polyester during fiscal 2025. The company says recycled-polyester content varies by product and is stated in the relevant technical specifications.
