A shooting brake is a sporty car that combines a coupé-like roofline with an extended rear section and a large hatch. It aims to keep the visual drama of a sports car while making the back seat and luggage area more useful. The term is a flexible design label, not a globally standardized vehicle class: one manufacturer may call a similar shape a Sport Turismo, Cross Turismo or Touring.
What “shooting brake” means
In practical terms, a shooting brake has three visual and functional cues:

- A sporting front and roof profile: the windscreen and roof often suggest a coupé rather than a conventional upright wagon.
- A roof that runs farther rearward: the extended roof creates more usable space behind the front seats than a low, short-deck sports car.
- A rear hatch: a large liftgate gives access to the cargo area and normally allows the rear seats to fold.
That description is deliberately broad. There is no universal technical rule setting the number of doors, the exact roof angle, the ride height or the minimum cargo volume. A four-door model can be presented as a shooting brake, while another car with a similar silhouette may be marketed as an estate, wagon, touring model or crossover.

Why the rear packaging matters
The useful part of the shape is the way the roof and hatch package the rear of the car. Compared with a conventional low-roof coupé, a long-roof design can provide easier loading, more headroom for rear passengers and a more adaptable luggage compartment. A hatch also lets an owner place bulky objects through a wider opening than a sedan’s trunk.
Those advantages are not guaranteed by the badge. A steeply sloped roof may still restrict tall cargo, and battery placement, suspension design and seat position determine the actual floor height. Two cars described as shooting brakes can therefore have very different rear-seat comfort and luggage capacity.
Where the name came from—and what history does not prove
The phrase predates modern electric cars. Porsche’s historical archive describes an extended 911 S variant from 1970, a four-seat 928-4 shooting-brake prototype from 1984 and the four-door 928 H50 concept from 1987. The 928-4 was a one-off presented to Ferry Porsche on 19 September 1984 and is held by the Porsche Museum.
Porsche’s archive calls the Panamera Sport Turismo its first series shooting brake. That is a statement about Porsche’s own production history, not proof that Porsche invented the entire body style or that every automaker uses the term in the same way. The archived 928-4 was listed with a 4,958 cm³ V8, 310 hp (228 kW), a 1,625 kg empty weight and a claimed 260 km/h top speed. Those are historical prototype figures, not specifications for current electric models.

How electric cars reinterpret the idea
Electric powertrains give designers more freedom over where major components sit, but they do not turn “shooting brake” into a technical EV category. Electric examples range from low, sleek tourers to raised, all-wheel-drive cars with protective bodywork.
Porsche Mission E Cross Turismo
Porsche presented the Mission E Cross Turismo as a high-seated electric Shooting Brake variant. Peter Varga, Porsche’s Head of Exterior Design Style, described it as “a high-seated Shooting Brake variant, designed quite deliberately to unite sportiness and luxury with environmental protection, even on off-road terrain.” That is the designer’s intention for a concept; it is not an independent measurement of environmental impact or off-road ability.
The concept shows how utility can be integrated into a performance-oriented shape. Porsche described folding rear seatbacks and a boot with adjustable, removable rails and straps for securing loads. Because those details belonged to the concept, they should not be assumed on every production model carrying a similar silhouette.

Porsche offers the Taycan in three broad body forms: a sports sedan, Sport Turismo and Cross Turismo. Porsche says the touring variants add rear-seat headroom and provide more than 1,200 litres of maximum luggage capacity behind the tailgate. The figure is a manufacturer specification for the relevant Taycan models and market or model year, not a category-wide shooting-brake standard.

Porsche’s current Great Britain model overview distinguishes the two touring bodies. Sport Turismo keeps the sporty profile while adding rear space and a large hatch. Cross Turismo uses a related silhouette but adds standard all-wheel drive and exterior details intended for rougher surfaces, such as lower body protection. Equipment and availability vary by market, so a buyer should check the local configurator rather than assume that every version is sold in every country.
NIO ET5 Touring
NIO describes the ET5 Touring as an electric tourer and emphasizes its flowing roofline. That wording matters: a car can have the proportions enthusiasts associate with a shooting brake without using that name in its official model designation. The ET5 Touring is therefore a useful example of the difference between a shape description and a manufacturer’s naming strategy.
What you gain—and what you give up
A shooting-brake-style EV is a compromise among appearance, passenger space, loading ability and driving hardware. Evaluate the actual vehicle rather than assuming that the label guarantees a result.

The body style alone does not establish acceleration, handling, efficiency or durability. Battery size, motor output, tyres, suspension tuning and vehicle weight matter more than the marketing label.

Does a shooting brake reduce electric range?
There is no general, evidence-based range penalty that can be assigned to every shooting brake. A longer roof, different rear treatment or increased ride height could affect a particular model’s aerodynamics and mass, but the available manufacturer descriptions do not quantify a universal drag, consumption or range difference.
Use the official range figure for the exact version, wheel-and-tyre combination and test procedure in your market. Compare like with like: a low Sport Turismo and a raised Cross Turismo may differ in motors, all-wheel-drive hardware, tyres and ground clearance as well as body shape. Without controlling those variables, a range difference cannot be attributed to the shooting-brake form alone.

Electric shooting brakes often communicate their propulsion through lighting, clean surfaces and grille treatment while retaining a recognizable sports-car stance. Michael Mauer, Porsche’s Chief Designer, wrote: “A battery-powered Porsche differs from a sports car with a combustion engine in terms of its typical design elements.” He cited details such as headlights arranged around the air intakes and an illuminated rear logo as ways to signal electric identity while preserving brand cues.
That explanation is Porsche’s design rationale for the Mission E Cross Turismo, not a universal rule for EV styling. Other manufacturers may use different lamps, aerodynamic details or front-end treatments, and some electric tourers deliberately minimize visual differences from combustion-engine estates.

How to decide whether one suits your needs
- Start with the rear seat. Sit in the second row with the front seats set for the intended drivers. Check headroom, foot space and the effect of the sloping roof.
- Measure the hatch opening. Bring the largest regular load—such as a stroller, bicycle or work case—and check whether it clears the opening and loading lip.
- Inspect the folded floor. Confirm how the rear seats split, whether they fold level and whether charging cables or other equipment consume usable space.
- Separate body style from drivetrain. Verify motor layout, all-wheel-drive availability, suspension height and any protective trim. A Cross Turismo-style model may have hardware that a lower touring version does not.
- Check the exact market specification. Cargo figures, standard equipment, trim names and availability can differ by country and model year. Porsche’s Great Britain descriptions, for example, are UK-market information.
- Compare official test figures carefully. Use the same wheels, tyres and testing standard when comparing range or consumption. Do not infer a body-style effect from two cars with different powertrains.
Common misconceptions
“A shooting brake must have two doors.”
Not necessarily. The term historically evokes a sporting, often two-door estate, but current manufacturers apply it to four-door cars as well. Door count is not a reliable technical test.
“Every estate with a sloping roof is a shooting brake.”
No. Estate, wagon, touring, fastback and shooting brake overlap in appearance, but naming is a manufacturer choice. Look at the brand’s official designation and the actual proportions rather than assigning the label automatically.
“The name guarantees sports-car handling.”
It does not. The label describes a visual and packaging compromise. Handling depends on suspension, steering, tyres, weight distribution and software calibration.

A higher ride height or dark lower trim may improve clearance or protect bodywork, but capability depends on ground clearance, traction control, tyres, approach angles and underbody protection. Porsche’s Cross Turismo equipment is a model-specific example, not a rule for all shooting brakes.
Bottom line
A shooting brake is best understood as a sporty, coupé-influenced car with an extended roof and useful rear hatch. Electric versions show how widely the idea can be interpreted: a low touring car, a raised all-wheel-drive model or an electric tourer may all share the visual language without belonging to a formal class. Judge each vehicle by rear-seat room, hatch usability, cargo measurements, drivetrain and verified efficiency figures—not by the name alone.
