A knock sensor detects vibration associated with engine knocking and sends a signal to the engine control unit (ECU), which can adjust ignition timing in response. This helps control sustained knock, a form of abnormal combustion that can damage engine components. The sensor is part of the engine-management system—not a cure for unsuitable fuel or an underlying engine fault.
What does a knock sensor do?
A knock sensor is typically mounted on the engine block or crankcase. In the Bosch designs described in its knock sensor overview and technical datasheet, a piezoelectric element detects structure-borne vibration and converts it into an electrical signal for the engine controller. Knocking produces characteristic higher-frequency vibration that the control system can distinguish from ordinary engine noise.

The ECU, engine control module (ECM), or powertrain control module (PCM) may use the signal to retard ignition timing. The precise control strategy varies by vehicle. For example, a 2013 Hyundai Motor America technical bulletin describes reducing timing advance until knock stops, then continuing to adjust timing to balance engine operation. That is an example for the bulletin’s specified context, not a universal description of every vehicle.
Why is knock control important?
Sustained knocking is associated with combustion occurring in a damaging way. Bosch identifies the cylinder-head gasket and cylinder head among components that sustained knocking can damage. A working knock-control system gives the controller information it can use to respond; it does not remove the underlying cause if, for example, the fuel is unsuitable or the engine has a fault.

Bosch stated in 2016 that engines with knock control can achieve up to 9% fuel savings and a 5% torque increase. These are manufacturer-published potential benefits, not guaranteed real-world results for every engine—and not a promise that replacing a sensor will produce those gains.
How can you tell if the knock sensor is bad?
A knock-sensor-related warning or diagnostic trouble code is a reason to investigate, but it does not prove the sensor itself has failed. Diagnosis may need to cover the sensor, its wiring and connectors, its mounting, and conditions that can cause knock. Bosch Diagnostics describes scan tools as a source of vehicle diagnostic information; some vehicle-specific procedures also use an oscilloscope to examine the sensor signal.

Test methods, resistance values, removal steps, and tightening specifications depend on the vehicle. The Hyundai bulletin demonstrates signal testing in its own service context and stresses that correct tightening torque matters for knock detection. Follow the vehicle’s service information rather than applying a procedure or specification from another model.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you drive with a bad knock sensor?
The available technical information establishes that sustained knock can damage engine components, but it does not provide a universal safe-driving rule for every sensor fault or vehicle. A fault code alone does not establish whether the engine is knocking or whether the sensor, circuit, or another issue is responsible. If you suspect active knocking or notice a warning, have the vehicle assessed promptly and follow its owner’s manual guidance; avoid assuming that the knock-control system can compensate indefinitely.

What to check before replacing a knock sensor
- Confirm the diagnosis: Use vehicle-specific service information to assess the code and inspect the sensor circuit and possible causes of knock.
- Verify fitment: Knock sensors are vehicle-specific. Check the exact application and part number against your vehicle. Bosch provides a replacement-sensor listing and vehicle-fitment lookup; availability and listings may change.
- Use the correct procedure: Consult the vehicle’s service information for installation steps and the tightening specification. Incorrect torque can affect knock detection.
