Harley-Davidson uses the designation for distinct, factory-custom motorcycles based on regular-production models. A CVO typically combines model-specific paint and finishes with premium equipment, exclusive components and, on some motorcycles, a higher-output engine or upgraded chassis hardware. The exact package changes by model year, so a CVO is not one universal specification.
What “CVO” means on a Harley-Davidson
Harley-Davidson describes each CVO as a factory-custom motorcycle based on a regular-production Harley-Davidson model, but treated as a distinct model in the company’s portfolio. That is different from buying a standard motorcycle and customizing it later with dealer or aftermarket parts.
The CVO bundle can include:
- Exclusive paint schemes and finish treatments
- Model-specific trim and components
- Premium audio, controls, lighting or comfort equipment
- A different engine variant or higher-output powertrain
- Performance-tuned suspension, wheels, brakes or rider aids on selected models
There is no single list of upgrades shared by every CVO. Compare the CVO with its closest standard-family counterpart for the same model year.
How the CVO program started
Harley-Davidson says it launched the CVO program in 1999 after riders asked for exclusive factory-custom motorcycles. The first CVO models were the FXR2 and FXR3, each limited to 900 units. Through 2024, Harley-Davidson says the program had produced 88 different custom motorcycle models.

Most CVO motorcycles were called Screamin’ Eagle models through 2008. Harley-Davidson adopted the CVO name instead in 2009. The program has also been used to introduce custom accessory collections, engine variants and paint or finishing techniques; some later appeared on regular-production motorcycles or as original-equipment accessories, while others remained exclusive.
How a CVO differs from a regular Harley-Davidson
Factory-custom equipment
A regular Harley-Davidson generally has the standard model’s equipment and color choices. A CVO arrives with a factory-selected combination of paint, trim, components and technology. The value is partly in receiving that complete combination without assembling it yourself.
Engine and performance hardware
Some CVOs use a different engine or chassis package, but the difference is not consistent across the range. Engine displacement, output, suspension tuning, braking hardware, wheels, tires, ride modes and rider aids must be checked on the exact model-year specifications.
Finish and included accessories
Paint, controls, seats, audio systems, lighting and trim can distinguish a CVO. For example, Harley-Davidson lists Torched Orange tri-tone paint, Carbide Collection heated grips and premium audio for the 2026 CVO Street Glide. A standard model may offer some related equipment separately, but fitment and finish must be confirmed for the specific motorcycle.

Price and availability
CVO motorcycles usually carry a substantially higher starting price because the special finish and equipment are included from the factory. Harley-Davidson describes production as extremely limited for most CVO motorcycles, but it does not publish one current production count covering every model. Availability and model names also vary by market and year.
2026 U.S. Street Glide versus CVO Street Glide
The clearest current comparison is Harley-Davidson’s 2026 U.S. Street Glide pair. The figures below are manufacturer-listed starting MSRPs and specifications, not dealer out-the-door prices.
| Comparison point | 2026 Street Glide | 2026 CVO Street Glide |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. listed starting price | $24,999+ | $49,999+ |

This list is specific to the U.S. 2026 model year. A different country or model year may have different names, specifications or availability.
Touring-focused CVO models
The CVO Street Glide emphasizes long-distance touring comfort alongside its VVT 121 powertrain, premium audio and distinctive finish. The CVO Street Glide Limited and CVO Street Glide 3 Limited apply the CVO treatment to larger touring configurations.
Performance-focused CVO models
The CVO Road Glide ST is not simply a more luxurious touring motorcycle. Harley-Davidson presents it as a race-inspired performance bagger and lists a Milwaukee-Eight 121 High Output engine producing 127 hp and 145 lb-ft of torque. Its priorities differ from the comfort-and-finish emphasis described for the CVO Street Glide.
The CVO Street Glide ST is likewise a separate performance-oriented model. Its equipment should be evaluated from the current model page rather than inferred from the touring CVO specification.

How to compare a CVO with its standard-family counterpart
1. Compare the complete price, not only MSRP
Start with each motorcycle’s listed MSRP, then identify the cost of adding comparable factory options to the standard model. Keep taxes, freight, setup, registration and dealer charges separate from the published starting price.
2. Check the exact engine and output
Record the engine name, displacement, horsepower and torque where Harley-Davidson publishes them. Do not assume that every CVO uses a larger or more powerful engine.
3. Inspect chassis and rider equipment
Compare suspension tuning, brakes, wheels, tires, ride modes and rider aids line by line. A CVO performance model may be configured for sharper handling, while a touring CVO may prioritize passenger and long-distance comfort.
4. List what is included in the finish package
Check paint, trim, seat, grips, controls, audio and lighting. Determine whether an item is CVO-exclusive, shared with the standard model or available later as a Harley-Davidson original-equipment accessory.
Best Value
- High tech, aerodynamic, sport styled Kinetic Polymer Alloy shell
- AREM rotational energy management meets ECE 22.06 standards
- Dynamic, flow-through ventilation
- Helmet shown with optional tinted shield. (Ships with clear shield only)
- DOT approved. Meets the FMVSS 218 Standard
5. Match the motorcycle to its intended use
- Touring priority: favor luggage, passenger comfort, audio, wind protection and long-distance equipment.
- Performance priority: focus on engine output, suspension, brakes, tires, chassis setup and available ride modes.
- Personal customization: compare the CVO’s included parts with the cost and effort of building a standard model to a similar specification.
6. Verify local availability and fitment
Production claims do not guarantee that a particular motorcycle is in stock near you. Confirm the model year, market, dealer inventory and any accessory fitment before paying a deposit. Heated grips, for example, must be checked against the exact year and model; an aftermarket listing is not necessarily the same part or finish as the factory CVO component.
Are CVO Harleys limited edition?
CVO motorcycles are positioned as limited, exclusive factory customs, and Harley-Davidson describes production as extremely limited for most CVO motorcycles. However, the company does not provide a single current production number for every CVO model. The documented 900-unit limits apply specifically to the 1999 FXR2 and FXR3, not automatically to later motorcycles.
Is a CVO worth the extra money?
There is no universal answer. A CVO is a logical choice for a buyer who values Harley-Davidson’s factory-selected paint, finish, equipment and, where offered, model-specific engine or chassis hardware. A standard model may be the better starting point for someone who wants a lower initial price or prefers choosing accessories and customization independently.
Make the decision by comparing the exact CVO’s included equipment with the standard motorcycle and the options you would actually buy. The manufacturer’s MSRP does not establish resale premiums, lower ownership costs or a reliability advantage.

- The available material does not establish production totals for every current CVO, resale-value premiums, reliability differences or total ownership costs.
The Bottom Line
A Harley-Davidson CVO is a distinct factory-custom version of a regular Harley model—not a single engine or body style. Its premium paint, equipment and sometimes performance hardware vary by model and year, so compare the exact CVO with its standard counterpart before deciding whether the added price matches what you want.
