The Acura MDX has four generations: 2001–2006, 2007–2013, 2014–2020, and 2022 onward. There was no regular 2021 MDX model year during the changeover to the current generation. The biggest redesigns arrived for 2007, 2014, and 2022; within those generations, notable milestones include the 2016–2017 safety and drivetrain updates, smartphone integration in 2018, and the 2025 touchscreen refresh.

Feature availability can differ by trim, drivetrain, and package. In particular, a feature introduced for a model year may have been optional rather than standard across the lineup.
First generation: 2001–2006
The original MDX paired a 3.2-liter SOHC VTEC V6 with a four-speed automatic and Variable Torque Management four-wheel drive (VTM-4). Acura’s chronology lists the engine at 240 horsepower at 5,300 rpm and 245 lb-ft at 3,000–5,000 rpm. Three-row seating was part of the MDX’s original mission.
2001
The MDX debuted as a 2001 model, introducing the three-row SUV with the 3.2-liter V6, four-speed automatic, and VTM-4.

2002
Acura added improved sound deadening and revised mirrors.
2003
Engine output rose to 260 horsepower, and the transmission became a five-speed automatic. Navigation was upgraded, and DVD entertainment became available as an option.
2004
An exterior redesign arrived with a 265-horsepower engine. Side-curtain airbags and tire-pressure monitoring were added.
2005
Navigation, XM satellite radio, and Bluetooth HandsFreeLink were among the additions.
2006
Acura’s chronology lists no major change for this final first-generation model year.

Second generation: 2007–2013
The 2007 redesign replaced the original setup with a 3.7-liter V6 rated at 300 horsepower and 275 lb-ft, paired with Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD). The generation later received a six-speed automatic as part of its 2010 update.
2007
The second generation launched with the larger 3.7-liter V6 and SH-AWD.
2008
Acura’s chronology lists no change for 2008.
2009
A power liftgate became standard.
2010
A styling and chassis update brought a six-speed automatic and additional safety and convenience equipment.

Acura’s chronology lists these model years as no-change years. That description refers to the chronology’s major-update record; it does not mean every trim or equipment detail was necessarily identical.
Third generation: 2014–2020
The 2014 redesign was a major structural and packaging reset. Acura introduced a purpose-built platform with a direct-injected V6 and an ACE body structure incorporating high-strength steel, aluminum, and magnesium. Acura said the new MDX was 275 pounds lighter than its predecessor, and a front-wheel-drive version joined the lineup.

2014
The new platform and lighter body debuted. The redesign also brought the front-wheel-drive option alongside available all-wheel drive.
2015
The 3.5-liter V6 remained rated at 290 horsepower. Acura highlighted Jewel Eye LED lighting, an 8-inch display, and a 432-watt audio system.

2016
A nine-speed automatic and push-button electronic gear selector arrived. SH-AWD adopted a twin-clutch setup, and AcuraWatch driver-assistance features became more broadly available. Check the specific trim when shopping, because broader availability does not mean every system was standard on every 2016 MDX.
2017
A refresh introduced the diamond-pentagon grille and revised exterior styling. AcuraWatch became standard on every grade, and the Sport Hybrid became an option. The hybrid combined a 3.0-liter V6, a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, and three electric motors. Acura said it provided 31 additional horsepower and an EPA city-fuel-economy rating 45 percent higher than the conventional MDX SH-AWD; those comparisons are Acura’s figures for the hybrid versus that conventional model.
2018
The dual-screen interface was redesigned, including a 7-inch capacitive touchscreen that Acura said responded 30 percent faster. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto became standard. The conventional MDX used a 3.5-liter direct-injected V6 rated at 290 horsepower and 267 lb-ft.

2019
The A-Spec appearance package joined the lineup, with larger wheels, black exterior cladding, and sport-focused interior finishes. It is a styling and equipment choice, not a separate generation or engine.

2020
The final third-generation year continued with the 3.5-liter V6 and nine-speed automatic. A-Spec, SH-AWD, and Sport Hybrid variants were offered, alongside revised seating and trim content.
Why there is no regular 2021 MDX
The third generation ended with the 2020 model year, and Acura introduced the fourth-generation MDX as a 2022 model. There was no regular 2021 MDX model year in that transition. For model-year parts, navigation, or shopping comparisons, do not assume that a 2020 and 2022 MDX share equipment or compatibility simply because the year gap is only one calendar year.

The 2022 MDX moved to a new light-truck platform and adopted a double-wishbone front suspension. Acura emphasized a more premium cabin and improved third-row space, including additional headroom and legroom compared with the prior model. The Type S expanded the range with a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 rated at 355 horsepower and fourth-generation SH-AWD.
2022–2024
The fourth-generation design began with the 2022 model year. The Type S added the turbocharged engine and its performance-oriented SH-AWD setup. Acura’s 2025 announcement describes the following refresh, but does not establish a distinct major redesign for each intervening model year.

2025
The refresh revised the front and rear styling and replaced the prior interface with a 12.3-inch touchscreen featuring Google built-in. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto became standard. Acura also enhanced AcuraWatch hardware, made Bang & Olufsen audio available, and introduced an MDX A-Spec with Advance Package. On the 2025 Type S Advance, Acura specified AcuraWatch 360; do not treat that equipment as standard on every 2025 trim.
Which MDX model years are best?
There is no single best year for every buyer. The documented changes point to different choices depending on whether you prioritize driver-assistance coverage, infotainment, hybrid power, or the newer platform.
- For standard AcuraWatch in the third generation: look at 2017 or later. Acura said AcuraWatch was standard on all 2017 grades.
- For factory Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in the third generation: start with 2018, when both became standard.
- For a third-generation hybrid: the 2017–2020 Sport Hybrid combines a V6 with three electric motors. Compare the exact vehicle’s trim and condition rather than assuming every MDX of those years is a hybrid.
- For the current-generation platform or Type S power: consider 2022 and later. Type S models have the 355-horsepower turbo V6 noted above.
- For the newest interface among the model years covered here: choose a 2025 model for the Google-built-in touchscreen and standard wireless smartphone integration.
These are feature-based recommendations, not reliability rankings. The available model-year information does not establish which MDX year is most reliable, and it does not provide comparative repair rates or long-term ownership data. For any used MDX, evaluate its service history, condition, inspection results, and the exact equipment on the vehicle rather than treating a generation update as proof of reliability.
How to choose between generations
Choose by powertrain and drivetrain
The first-generation VTM-4 system, second-generation SH-AWD, third-generation front-wheel-drive and SH-AWD choices, and three-motor Sport Hybrid are not interchangeable descriptions of the same setup. Fourth-generation MDXs also vary, with the Type S pairing its turbo V6 with fourth-generation SH-AWD. Confirm drivetrain and engine from the specific vehicle’s listing or identification information, especially when comparing trims.

AcuraWatch became broadly available in 2016 and standard across 2017 grades, making that change a useful dividing line within the third generation. Newer fourth-generation hardware brings more recent systems, while Acura identifies AcuraWatch 360 on the 2025 Type S Advance. Equipment still depends on model year and grade, so verify the actual car’s feature list.
Choose by infotainment
Older MDXs may have navigation or earlier multimedia systems, but those features differ by year and equipment. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto became standard in 2018, and the 2025 refresh moved to a 12.3-inch touchscreen with Google built-in. If navigation updates, replacement parts, or accessories matter, use the exact model year and trim: Acura’s navigation catalog is organized by model year, and compatibility should not be inferred from generation alone.
Choose by space and overall redesign
All four generations retain three-row seating. The 2014 redesign focused on a lighter structure and revised packaging, while the 2022 platform added third-row headroom and legroom. If the third row will be used regularly, compare the exact generation and vehicle in person rather than assuming all three-row MDXs offer the same room.
Sources and model-year scope
The early year-by-year changes above follow Acura’s MDX chronology (2012). Third-generation launch and update details are based on Acura announcements from 2013 through 2019; fourth-generation and 2025 refresh details are based on Acura announcements from 2020 and 2024. The latest refresh described here is the 2025 model year; no claim is made here about changes to later model years.
