When you buy a new car, the window sticker usually includes a line called a destination charge. It can add more than $1,000 to the advertised price, even when the dealership is only a short distance from the vehicle’s assembly plant.
This fee is legitimate when it represents the manufacturer’s cost of transporting the vehicle to the dealer. However, it is often confused with dealer fees, add-ons, and market adjustments—and a second “delivery” or “freight” charge may be questionable. Here’s what the fee covers, where to find it, and how to negotiate around it.
What is a destination charge?
A destination charge is the automaker’s charge for transporting a new vehicle from its assembly plant or import port to the dealership. It may also be called a:
- Delivery charge
- Freight charge
- Transportation charge
- Inland freight and handling charge
The charge is separate from the dealer’s documentation fee, registration costs, taxes, and optional products. It is primarily associated with new vehicles. A used-car dealer may charge for transportation, preparation, or reconditioning, but those are not the original factory destination charge.

Manufacturers generally use an equalized delivery system. In other words, the charge is normally set for a particular model or vehicle line rather than calculated from the exact distance between the factory and your dealership. A buyer may therefore pay the same destination charge whether the vehicle travels 200 miles or crosses the country.
Where can you find the destination charge?
On a new vehicle, look at the official Monroney window sticker. The destination or freight charge is normally near the bottom of the sticker, immediately before the Total MSRP.
Federal law requires the sticker to show the amount charged to the dealer for transporting the vehicle to the delivery location. The total MSRP includes the vehicle’s base price, factory-installed options, and transportation charge. An advertised starting price, however, may show only the base price and exclude destination.
For example, a sticker might look like this:
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Base MSRP | $32,500 |
| Factory options | $1,800 |
| Destination charge | $1,595 |
| Total MSRP | $35,895 |
The exact amount varies by manufacturer, model, model year, and sometimes region. Consumer Reports found destination charges ranging from approximately $1,150 to $3,250 among the models it reviewed in March 2026. That range is only a snapshot; use the sticker for the specific car you are considering.

Manufacturers typically pool transportation costs across a model line instead of billing each customer according to the vehicle’s precise route. This makes pricing more consistent across dealerships.
That system explains why picking up a car near its factory usually does not remove the charge. The fee is attached to the vehicle’s factory pricing structure, not simply added because a particular dealer hired a truck for your purchase.
Can you avoid paying a destination charge?
Usually, you cannot delete the factory charge
Destination charges are generally treated as fixed manufacturer charges. Dealers usually cannot remove the line from the Monroney sticker, and arranging your own transportation or collecting the car near the factory normally does not change the amount.

Even special delivery programs may not eliminate it. For example, a Chevrolet Corvette buyer taking delivery at the National Corvette Museum may still see the standard destination charge on the vehicle’s window sticker.

You can negotiate the overall price
Although the dealer may not be able to erase the destination line, it may have room to reduce the vehicle’s selling price, apply a dealer discount, or use an eligible manufacturer incentive. If the discount equals the destination charge, the financial result is similar even though the fee remains listed.
Focus on the out-the-door price rather than insisting that one specific line disappear. A dealer who says “we cannot waive destination” may be accurately describing the manufacturer charge while still being able to discount the car elsewhere.
A useful negotiation request is:
“I understand the destination charge is on the factory sticker. If it cannot be removed, what is the lowest out-the-door price you can offer, including every mandatory fee, tax, and registration cost?”
Watch for duplicate freight or delivery fees
You should not automatically pay a second charge for the same factory transportation. If the Monroney sticker already lists a destination charge, question another line described as:

Ask the dealer to explain the additional charge in writing and compare it with the window sticker. A separate fee might represent a different service—for example, moving a vehicle from another dealership—but it should not simply duplicate the factory charge without an explanation.
Do not assume that a fee is legitimate merely because it appears on a buyer’s order. Ask what service it covers, whether it is mandatory, and whether it applies to this specific vehicle.

Destination charge versus other dealer fees
Several unrelated costs can appear next to the destination charge. Treat each one separately:
| Charge | What it generally covers |
|---|---|
| Destination charge | Factory transportation of a new vehicle to the dealership |
| Documentation or conveyance fee | Dealer processing of sale, title, or registration paperwork |
| Preparation or reconditioning fee | Cleaning, inspection, or preparation—more common in used-car transactions |
| Dealer-installed add-ons | Products such as window tint, theft protection, paint coating, nitrogen, or accessories |
| Market adjustment or dealer markup | An extra amount based on demand, inventory, or dealer pricing strategy |
Dealer-installed products are not automatically required just because the dealer has already installed them. The FTC says dealers cannot charge customers for add-ons they do not want. Ask for unwanted products to be removed or for their cost to be taken out of the selling price.
Get the out-the-door price before visiting
The safest way to compare dealerships is to request a written out-the-door quote for the exact vehicle identification number, or VIN. Ask the dealer to itemize:
- Vehicle selling price
- Destination charge
- Documentation or processing fee
- Dealer-installed accessories and add-ons
- Sales tax
- Title, registration, and other government charges
- Discounts and rebates
- Any eligibility requirements for those discounts
Confirm whether the quoted price depends on dealer financing, a trade-in, military eligibility, a college-graduate program, or a rebate you do not qualify for. Some advertised prices look low because they exclude mandatory fees or apply only when several conditions are met.
Compare the final totals from multiple dealers. One dealer may show a lower vehicle price but add a large documentation fee or accessories; another may list a higher selling price but offer a lower total. The number that matters is the amount required to complete the purchase.

The FTC’s Combating Auto Retail Scams, or CARS, Rule is not currently an enforceable federal rule. The FTC withdrew it effective February 12, 2026, after court decisions vacated the rule.
That withdrawal does not make deceptive pricing acceptable. In March 2026, the FTC warned 97 auto dealership groups that advertised prices must reflect the total price, including mandatory fees. The warning addressed undisclosed required charges, prices conditioned on financing, and vehicles that were not actually available. Federal consumer-protection laws and state dealer regulations still apply.

Questions to ask before signing
- “Is this the factory destination charge shown on the Monroney sticker?”
- “What service does this separate delivery, freight, or transportation fee cover?”
- “Are any add-ons included that I did not request?”
- “Is this discount available without using dealer financing?”
- “What is the complete out-the-door total, including tax and registration?”
- “Can you provide that price in writing for this VIN?”
If the dealer refuses to identify a mandatory fee or adds charges after you have agreed on a written price, pause the transaction. You can compare another dealer rather than arguing over an unexplained line item.
FAQ
Is a destination charge negotiable?
The factory destination charge is usually not removable as a separate line because it is part of the manufacturer’s pricing. You can still negotiate a lower vehicle price, dealer discount, or incentive that offsets some or all of it.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Can I avoid the destination fee by picking up the car at the factory?
Usually not. Manufacturers generally use equalized delivery pricing, so factory pickup or special-event delivery does not automatically remove the destination charge shown on the window sticker.
Why am I being charged destination twice?
A second freight or delivery fee may represent a separate service, such as moving a vehicle between dealerships, but it should not duplicate the factory charge without an explanation. Ask the dealer to identify the extra fee in writing.
Do used cars have destination charges?
Used cars generally do not have the original factory destination charge. A dealer may instead charge transportation, delivery, preparation, or reconditioning fees. Ask what the fee covers and negotiate it as part of the vehicle’s total price.
The Bottom Line
For a new car, the destination charge on the Monroney sticker is usually a legitimate manufacturer transportation cost that you cannot eliminate by picking up the vehicle yourself. You can negotiate the total price around it, however. Compare written out-the-door quotes, challenge duplicate freight or delivery fees, and refuse unwanted add-ons or unexplained charges.
