The best car accessories are not novelty gadgets. They are small upgrades that solve expensive, inconvenient problems: a dead battery, a slow tire leak, an unreadable check-engine light, glare on a dash-cam recording, or a phone that has to be plugged in every time you drive.
These are the car-tech accessories worth considering in 2025. Each recommendation includes the compatibility detail that can make the difference between a useful upgrade and an expensive piece of clutter.

1. Wireless CarPlay adapter
If your car already has wired Apple CarPlay, a wireless adapter is one of the easiest quality-of-life upgrades available. You plug the adapter into the vehicle’s CarPlay USB port, pair your iPhone, and leave the phone in your pocket or charging cradle.
The key distinction is compatibility. A wireless adapter converts wired CarPlay to wireless CarPlay; it does not install CarPlay in a vehicle whose factory head unit only supports USB charging, Bluetooth, or neither. Check the adapter maker’s vehicle list before buying.

What to check before buying
- Confirm that the car supports wired CarPlay, not merely USB music playback or phone charging.
- Identify the correct USB port. Many vehicles have one data/CarPlay port and additional charging-only ports.
- Check whether the adapter supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, or both. Do not assume both systems work just because one does.
- Check compatibility with the specific vehicle year and head-unit version.
For an iPhone that will not connect, use Settings > General > CarPlay > Available Cars. Wireless CarPlay also depends on Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Siri being enabled. Updating iOS, vehicle software, and the adapter firmware can resolve intermittent connections. A different cable or USB port is also worth trying.
2. Garmin Dash Cam Mini 3
The Garmin Dash Cam Mini 3 is a good fit for drivers who want a compact camera without a large screen hanging from the windshield. It records at 1080p, uses a 140-degree field of view, and has a built-in polarizer designed to reduce windshield glare. The model’s part number is 010-02899-00.
Its small size is useful, but do not confuse discreet with wireless. The camera still needs power while driving, and parking recording needs an always-on power source. Garmin lists Constant Power Cable and compatible Parking Mode Cable options for this purpose.
Setup details that matter
- Install a microSDHC or microSDXC card from 8GB to 512GB.
- Use a Class 10 or faster card formatted as FAT32.
- Mount the camera where it does not obstruct the driver’s view.
- For parking protection, provide constant power and open Settings > Parking Guard > Enable.
Parking Guard is impact-triggered recording, not continuous surveillance of every person or vehicle moving near the car. Notifications require the camera to be connected to Wi-Fi.

There is also a battery-drain tradeoff. Garmin’s Constant Power Cable shuts down after 10 minutes if vehicle voltage falls below 12 volts and will not resume until voltage is restored. An old battery, cold weather, or a charging-system problem can reduce the margin before protection activates. Dash-camera use and windshield placement may also be regulated in some jurisdictions, so check local rules.
3. NOCO Boost Plus GB40 jump starter

The engine-size rating is not a suggestion to use it on every truck or diesel vehicle. A larger engine requires a more powerful model. Keep the unit charged, inspect the clamps before use, and follow the vehicle and jump pack instructions.

If the car repeatedly needs a jump, investigate the battery, alternator, parasitic drain, cable connections, or starter. It does not repair any of those faults.
4. RYOBI PCL001B digital tire inflator
The RYOBI 18V ONE+ High Pressure Digital Inflator PCL001B is useful for correcting normal pressure loss without driving to a gas station. It has an LCD pressure gauge, automatic shutoff at the selected pressure, onboard accessory storage, and a maximum rating of 160 psi.
That 160-psi figure is the tool’s maximum capability, not the pressure you should put in your vehicle tires. Use the cold-pressure number on the driver’s door placard or in the owner’s manual. The number molded into the tire sidewall is generally the tire’s maximum permissible pressure, not the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended setting.
For a meaningful pressure check, work on cold tires: NHTSA defines that as a car parked for at least three hours or driven less than one mile. Set the inflator to the vehicle’s specified pressure and let its automatic shutoff stop the pump.

Compatible software includes the OBDLink app, OBDLink for iOS, OBDLink for Android, and OBDWiz for Windows. Depending on the vehicle and software, additional functions can include TPMS resets or electronic-parking-brake service procedures.
That “depending” matters. An OBD adapter does not diagnose every warning light or repair a fault. Module access, service functions, supported model years, and software capabilities vary widely. Clearing a code also does not fix the reason it appeared; the light may return, and clearing codes can erase useful diagnostic information.

Be cautious about leaving any OBD adapter plugged in. Some vehicles continue powering the diagnostic port after the ignition is off. If the adapter or vehicle does not reliably enter sleep mode, remove it when parked for an extended period.
6. Apple AirTag for keys and emergency gear
An AirTag is a practical addition to a car emergency kit, spare-key case, luggage, or a removable dash-cam bag. It uses Bluetooth and Apple’s Find My network, with Ultra Wideband Precision Finding on compatible devices, NFC Lost Mode, IP67 water and dust resistance, and a replaceable CR2032 battery.
It does not contain a standalone GPS receiver or cellular modem, so it is not live GPS tracking. Its location updates depend on nearby Apple devices detecting the Bluetooth signal and reporting it through the Find My network.

To check the AirTag battery, open Find My > Items > [AirTag]. A low-battery message appears beneath the item name. Some bitterant-coated CR2032 batteries may not work; use a battery whose packaging says it is compatible with AirTag.
The product discussed here is the earlier AirTag generation relevant to 2025. Apple introduced a new AirTag in January 2026, so later-generation specifications should not be presented as 2025 features.

A good USB-C car charger can power a phone, dash cam, passenger tablet, or portable game system without filling the cabin with adapters. Look beyond the large wattage printed on the front of the box.
Before buying, verify:
- USB Power Delivery support and the power required by each device.
- Per-port output when two or more ports are in use.
- The charger’s total-output limit.
- Whether USB-C and USB-A ports share power in a way that reduces charging speed.
- Whether the vehicle’s 12-volt socket is switched or always live.
An always-live outlet can continue drawing power after the engine is off, particularly if a dash cam, battery bank, or other device remains connected. The owner’s manual determines how the socket behaves; the charger’s packaging does not.
8. Portable CarPlay and Android Auto display
A standalone display can modernize an older car without replacing the factory head unit. It is particularly useful when the original vehicle has no usable screen but you want navigation, hands-free calling, and phone-based media controls.
Audio integration is the part most likely to disappoint. Depending on the model, sound may reach the factory speakers through Bluetooth, a wired AUX connection, or an FM transmitter. Bluetooth can connect for calls but fail to route media correctly; AUX requires a physical input; FM transmitters can suffer interference and crowded frequencies.
Do not expect a portable screen to provide factory steering-wheel integration, vehicle settings, backup-camera compatibility, or the same microphone quality as an original system unless the specific product explicitly supports those features. It is an add-on display, not a replacement for every function in the factory infotainment system.

Mount it so it does not block the driver’s view, interfere with airbags, or create a dangerous cable crossing. Windshield and dashboard mounting rules vary by location.
How to choose the right accessory for your car
- Start with the problem. Choose a jump pack for starting emergencies, an inflator for pressure checks, and an OBD adapter for diagnosis. Do not buy based only on a high specification.
- Check the vehicle first. Look at the owner’s manual, USB-port labels, infotainment settings, engine size, tire placard, and available 12-volt sockets.
- Separate convenience from safety equipment. A wireless adapter improves usability; a dash cam and emergency tools address different risks and need different installation decisions.
- Plan for power. Dash cams need continuous power to record, OBD adapters may remain awake, and always-live 12-volt sockets can drain a battery.
- Confirm what the package includes. Inflators may be tool-only, dash cams may require a memory card, and portable displays may need separate AUX or mounting hardware.
- Check local rules. Camera placement, windshield mounts, and recording laws are not identical everywhere.

What is the best car accessory to buy first?

Will a wireless CarPlay adapter work in any car?
