A 102.4-liter engine is an industrial-scale diesel, not an oversized car engine. The displacement figure describes the combined swept volume of all cylinders. Engines in this class were built to deliver sustained mechanical power or turn generators in places such as power stations, factories, oil fields, ships, tugboats, dredgers and locomotives. A viral starting video has been described in secondary coverage as involving a Mirrlees Blackstone JS8, but that exact model, its original job and its specifications have not been confirmed by the available historical record.
What does 102.4 liters mean?
Engine displacement is the total volume swept by the pistons as they move through their cylinders. At 102.4 liters, the engine has a working volume many times larger than a passenger-car engine. The number does not mean that the engine holds 102.4 liters of fuel or lubricating oil, nor does it directly state the engine’s power.

Displacement is only one part of an engine’s design. Rated output also depends on cylinder count, bore and stroke, compression, turbocharging, injection equipment, operating speed, cooling, and whether the engine is tuned for continuous or intermittent service. Two engines with similar displacement can have very different power ratings and duties.
The identification circulating with the viral starting story comes from an October 2026 AP Tuning article, which calls the engine a 102.4-liter Mirrlees Blackstone JS8 diesel. The Anson Engine Museum’s history of Mirrlees supports the company’s broad industrial and marine work, but it does not verify a JS8 of this displacement or identify the particular engine’s output, speed, installation or restoration result. The JS8 description should therefore be treated as a reported identification, not as a fully documented specification.

What is established and what is not

What are engines this size used for?
Large Mirrlees diesels were made for work that demanded substantial power for long periods. Depending on the model and installation, that could mean driving an electrical generator, turning a propeller or pump, moving a locomotive, or supplying a mobile industrial power pack. The manufacturer’s history documents these application classes across different engine ranges; it does not assign every use to the reported 102.4-liter unit.
Stationary electricity generation
A large diesel can be mechanically coupled to an alternator to form a generating set. In a power station or industrial plant, the engine supplies torque to the generator, while switchgear controls how electricity is connected to the site’s loads or the wider grid. Large engines were useful where a site needed dependable output and could provide fuel storage, cooling equipment, exhaust treatment and a substantial foundation.
Stationary service can be continuous, intended for base-load operation, or occasional, used for standby and emergency power. Those are different designs: a base-load machine may be optimized to run for long stretches at a steady load, while a standby set may spend most of its life stopped and start only during an outage. The existence of a generator coupling would identify an electrical duty, but it would not by itself reveal whether the set was base-load or standby.
Marine propulsion and auxiliary power
Mirrlees histories include marine engines, including propulsion and auxiliary duties. A propulsion engine drives a vessel’s shaft or other transmission. An auxiliary engine supplies electricity, pumps, compressors or other shipboard services while a separate engine handles propulsion. Tugs, dredgers and workboats have particularly demanding duty cycles because they may need high power at low speed and frequent changes in load.
A marine installation normally leaves clues such as a marine gearbox, shaft coupling, reversing arrangement, seawater cooling components or a vessel’s documented engine room. Without those records or fittings, it is not sound to label the 102.4-liter engine a tug, dredger or ship engine merely because Mirrlees built engines for those roles.

Locomotives and rail equipment
The postwar Mirrlees J range included locomotive applications. In a locomotive, the diesel’s power is transmitted through a mechanical, hydraulic or electrical system to the driving wheels. The engine itself may be large, but the complete installation also requires traction equipment, cooling, fuel storage and controls designed for a moving vehicle.
Rail use would usually be suggested by a locomotive frame, traction transmission, rail-specific cooling arrangement or a documented fleet number. None of those details has been established for the reported engine.

Mirrlees histories also describe oil-field service and industrial power packs. An engine in an oil field might drive pumps, compressors or drilling-related equipment rather than an alternator. These installations often had to operate far from a utility grid, so a self-contained diesel power unit could provide both mechanical drive and electricity.
The same principle applies to large pumps, compressors and processing machinery in mines, factories and remote infrastructure. A direct mechanical drive can be more suitable than generating electricity first, but the engine’s attached equipment is what reveals the actual duty.
Industrial and mobile power packs
Some Mirrlees engines were installed in mobile or semi-mobile power packs. These could be moved between worksites while remaining far larger than road-vehicle engines. A skid, trailer, generator, hydraulic pump or compressor package would be designed around the required output and the site’s fuel, cooling and exhaust arrangements.

Why build a diesel with such enormous displacement?
A larger displacement gives an engine the potential to burn more air and fuel per cycle, producing more torque when the cylinders, injection system and operating speed are designed for that purpose. Industrial engines also have to tolerate heavy loads, long running periods and maintenance schedules measured in operating hours rather than road miles.
Large diesels are physically substantial because their crankcase, crankshaft, cylinder heads, bearings, cooling passages and fuel systems must withstand high combustion forces. The engine is only one part of the installation. Foundations or bedplates carry its weight and reaction forces; cooling systems remove waste heat; exhaust systems handle a large gas flow; and fuel, lubrication, starting and control equipment must all be sized for industrial operation.
These requirements explain why a 102.4-liter engine is not practical as a normal car, truck or recreational-boat engine. It needs industrial space, structural support and infrastructure. Its value comes from delivering useful power reliably in a fixed or specialized installation, not from fitting into a compact vehicle.
How can you tell what the reported engine was used for?
Displacement and appearance are not enough. The most reliable identification combines the engine’s nameplate with the equipment attached to it and a documented chain of ownership.
- Read the nameplate and cast markings. Record the manufacturer, model, serial number, cylinder arrangement, rated speed and any date or builder information. Photograph every plate before cleaning or repainting.
- Inspect the driven end. An alternator, generator housing and switchgear point toward electrical generation. A gearbox or shaft coupling suggests propulsion or direct mechanical drive. A pump, compressor or hydraulic unit indicates process or field equipment.
- Look for installation-specific hardware. Marine cooling components, locomotive traction equipment, skid frames, flexible couplings, reduction gears and remote control linkages can narrow the possibilities, but they should be interpreted with the serial record.
- Trace provenance. Former owners, plant records, ship registers, locomotive files, auction documents and restoration logs can establish where a particular serial-numbered engine worked.
- Compare the evidence with manufacturer history. Mirrlees made several ranges for different duties. A match to a broad range is useful context, but it is not proof that this exact engine served every application associated with the company.
Stationary or mobile? Electric or mechanical? The useful distinctions
When people ask whether the engine was “for a factory,” “a generator,” “a ship” or “a locomotive,” they are really asking several separate questions. These comparisons help organize the possibilities without pretending that one has been proven.

These are diagnostic axes, not a verdict about the 102.4-liter engine. The available evidence does not tie its serial number to a specific plant, vessel, railway or oil field.

The AP Tuning report describes an attempt to start the reported engine after its compressed-air starting system was said to be inadequate, with a pickup used in the attempt. That account explains why the footage attracted attention: starting a very large diesel involves far more than turning a normal ignition key.
Compressed-air starting is an industrial arrangement in which stored air turns a starting motor or acts through the engine’s starting system. A machine of this scale also needs correctly supplied fuel, lubrication, cooling, safe exhaust routing and a foundation capable of handling cranking and combustion forces. If any of those systems is incomplete, forcing the crankshaft to turn does not make the engine ready for operation.
The historical museum source does not independently verify the video, the pickup-assisted procedure, the engine’s exact model or the result of the start. Treat those details as a report about a viral event rather than as a certified test or restoration record.

- The K range was described as a larger, slower-speed family.
- Later K Major engines were used for base-load power generation, marine propulsion and auxiliary duties.
Those examples show why a very large Mirrlees diesel might be found in a generator hall, ship, rail installation or industrial compound. They do not transfer a K-range rating, speed, fuel figure or application to a reported JS8. No verified JS8-specific statistic—power, rpm, fuel consumption or efficiency—has been established in the available material.
What a 102.4-liter label cannot tell you
- Power: Output requires the engine’s rated speed, configuration and calibration, not just displacement.
- Fuel consumption: Consumption changes with load, speed, fuel system condition and operating point.
- Original installation: The same basic engine family may be adapted for a generator, ship, locomotive or direct-drive machinery.
- Condition: A preserved, incomplete or worn engine may have no current operating rating at all.
- Starting method: The presence or absence of compressed-air equipment depends on the installation and its modifications.
What operating or restoring one involves
Anyone responsible for a historic industrial diesel must treat it as heavy machinery, not as a large hobby engine. Before any start attempt, specialists normally establish that the crankshaft can turn freely, lubricating oil is present and circulated, fuel delivery is controlled, cooling is available, exhaust is safely routed, and the foundation and couplings are secure. Starting-air receivers, electrical systems and emergency stops must be checked as systems, not improvised around.
Restoration also involves deciding whether the goal is static preservation, occasional demonstration or sustained generating or mechanical service. Those goals require different inspections, replacement parts, instrumentation and risk controls. A running video alone cannot establish that an engine is suitable for continued duty.
So what was this particular engine used for?
The defensible answer is that its exact former duty is not established. It is reasonable to say that a diesel of this broad Mirrlees class was built for industrial-scale power—possibly generation, propulsion, traction, pumping or another heavy mechanical load—but the available record does not identify which one applied to the 102.4-liter unit.
If a nameplate, serial number, installation photograph or ownership document becomes available, that evidence could distinguish a generator set from a marine, rail or direct-drive installation. Until then, “a very large industrial diesel” is more accurate than assigning it to a ship, factory or locomotive.
