When an electric delivery truck gets close to empty, the driver may receive dashboard or remote warnings and the truck can reduce available power. The correct response is to tell dispatch early, use the truck’s own range and route guidance, and head only to a charging site confirmed to support that vehicle. If the truck can no longer continue, treat it as a recovery event and follow the manufacturer’s roadside and towing procedure.
“Low charge” is not one universal percentage
Electric trucks do not share a single warning threshold, guaranteed number of miles remaining, or standard power-reduction behavior. A dashboard state-of-charge reading and estimated range are specific to the truck, its software and the conditions in which it is operating. The owner’s manual and the vehicle display take precedence over rules of thumb from another make.

That matters during a delivery shift because a percentage that looks comfortable on one route may be inadequate on another. A truck carrying a heavier load, climbing grades, driving at higher speeds, sitting in traffic, operating in severe weather or running energy-consuming equipment can use energy faster than a simple distance calculation suggests. Conversely, a lightly loaded truck on a favorable route may cover more distance than an earlier estimate.

Dashboard and remote notifications
Volvo Trucks says battery energy status can be followed on the dashboard and remotely. Its electric-truck FAQ states: “If it does approach zero, the driver is notified and the available power is reduced, which will influence drivability.” This is a manufacturer-specific description, not a universal promise that every electric truck enters an identical limp mode at the same percentage.

A warning should therefore be treated as an operational decision point, not as permission to continue until the display reaches zero. The warning level, the amount of power still available and the truck’s behavior can differ by model, battery configuration, software version and operating conditions. If acceleration or hill-climbing ability begins to feel different, the driver should avoid creating a traffic hazard and contact dispatch immediately.
Why the displayed range can change
Volvo’s Range and Route service calculates a route using truck specifications, payload, weather, terrain and energy-consuming equipment, and can add charging stops. Volvo’s FAQ also identifies speed, load, traffic, topography and fast-charging possibilities as planning inputs. These variables explain why a range number is an estimate for a particular route rather than a fixed reserve that can be transferred to another shift.
What to do when a low-charge warning appears
- Read the vehicle display carefully. Record the state of charge, estimated range, warning text and any power limitation. Note the truck’s location and direction of travel. Do not substitute a generic percentage or a remembered range figure from another vehicle.
- Notify dispatch before the situation becomes urgent. Send the current state of charge, location, destination, remaining stops and any delivery deadline or restricted-access requirement. Dispatch may have information about approved charging sites, vehicle assignments, parking access or a relief plan that the driver cannot see from the cab.
- Recalculate the route with the truck’s approved tools. Use the vehicle navigation, the fleet’s route-planning system and the operating procedure for that truck. Include the actual payload and current weather or terrain when the system asks for them. A route that reaches the destination on paper may not be viable if it leaves no practical charging option.
- Identify a compatible charging stop. Confirm that the site accepts the truck’s connector and charging requirements, allows the truck’s dimensions and weight, and is open to the vehicle’s operator. A station listed on a map is not automatically suitable for a commercial truck.
- Agree on the delivery decision with dispatch. The safest plan may be to charge before the next stop, change the sequence of deliveries, hand over the load, or park at a safe location. Record who approved the plan and any customer notification so the driver is not trying to solve a dispatch problem while operating the vehicle.
- Follow the truck manual’s energy and driving guidance. Do not invent a “last-mile” strategy or rely on advice for a different model. If the manual or fleet policy specifies limits for speed, equipment use, charging or parking, follow those instructions.
- Escalate before the truck stops. If no compatible charger can be reached with an appropriate margin, tell dispatch and request roadside support while the truck can still be positioned safely. Waiting for a complete shutdown can turn a planned charging stop into a recovery operation.
How to judge whether a charging stop is actually usable
Range planning and charger selection are separate decisions. A route service may identify a charging point, but the driver or fleet still needs to verify that the location works for this truck and this shift.

Vehicle and connector compatibility
Check the charging standard, connector, maximum charging rate and any authorization or payment requirement specified for the truck. Do not assume that a passenger-car charger, portable charger, cable or adapter can charge a depleted delivery truck. The available equipment must match both the vehicle and the site.
Physical access and operating constraints
Confirm that the approach, turning area, bay length, clearance and opening hours suit a rigid truck or tractor-trailer. A charger that is technically compatible may still be unusable if the truck cannot enter, queue or leave without blocking traffic. Ask dispatch to verify access when the station’s listing does not describe truck dimensions.
Live availability and charging time
Where the fleet tool provides it, check whether the charger is available and how long charging is expected to take. Include queueing and the time needed to reach the next stop. A station that is close but occupied can be less useful than a farther site with a confirmed bay.

Weather, terrain and load on the final leg
Use the truck’s actual payload and route conditions when deciding how much energy margin is needed after charging. Uphill terrain, congestion, high speed and energy-consuming equipment can change the estimate. Keep the margin required by the operator’s policy; do not reduce it simply because the map shows a short distance.

If the truck can no longer proceed
A truck that has already stopped because it lacks usable energy is no longer making a routine charging stop. Move to a safe position if the vehicle can do so without creating danger, activate the required warning equipment, and contact dispatch and the manufacturer’s approved roadside channel. Give the responder the exact model, location, direction of travel, state-of-charge display, warning message and cargo or access constraints.
The recovery sequence is model-specific. Tesla’s Cybertruck manual, for example, instructs the driver to pull over when safe and contact Tesla Roadside Assistance or a preferred tow provider. That instruction illustrates the need to use the vehicle’s own manual; it must not be copied to a commercial truck from another manufacturer. Towing, charging and vehicle-securement requirements can differ, so the driver should not improvise a connection, tow method or restart procedure.

How route planning prevents a low-charge incident
Planning should begin before the truck leaves the depot. A dependable plan combines the vehicle’s technical data with the work the truck must actually perform.

- Start with the assigned truck. Use its battery configuration, software and approved charging capabilities rather than a generic electric-truck range.
- Enter the real payload and stops. Include the number and order of deliveries, loading changes, restricted streets and any return-to-depot requirement.
- Account for conditions. Include forecast weather, elevation changes, traffic-sensitive roads and equipment that consumes energy while parked or moving.
- Place charging stops where the truck can use them. Confirm connector, access, hours, authorization, truck space and expected charging time.
- Leave the operator’s required reserve. Do not plan to arrive at zero, and do not treat the route planner’s estimate as a guarantee.
- Monitor during the shift. Compare actual state of charge and consumption with the plan at each stop. If the trend worsens, involve dispatch while alternatives remain.
Common failure modes and the correct response
| Situation | Why it creates risk | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| The driver waits until the display reaches the lowest warning. | Power may already be reduced, leaving fewer safe options and less time to reach a suitable charger. | Report the first meaningful warning, location and route constraints to dispatch; make a charging or stopping decision early. |
| A passenger-car charger appears closest on the map. | It may not support the truck’s connector, power requirements, physical access or operating account. | Verify compatibility and truck access with the fleet’s approved information before diverting. |
| The displayed range is treated as a fixed mileage guarantee. | Speed, payload, traffic, topography, weather and equipment use can change consumption. | Recalculate with current conditions and keep the required reserve. |
| The driver assumes every truck has the same power-reduction behavior. | Warning logic and drivability effects are model-specific. | Use the exact manual and dashboard message for that vehicle; do not apply another make’s threshold. |
| The truck has stopped and the driver tries an improvised tow or charge. | Recovery and charging procedures differ by model and can create safety or equipment risks. | Contact the manufacturer-approved roadside service or qualified tow provider and follow the vehicle-specific procedure. |
| A fleet tool lists a charger that is unavailable or not yet deployed in the region. | Service rollouts, live status and geographic coverage change. | Verify current availability, station status and support terms before the shift and again when diverting. |
A practical low-charge policy for delivery fleets
A written policy makes the response consistent without pretending that every truck has the same threshold. It should identify the approved route-planning and charging tools, the dispatch contact, the minimum operating reserve set by the fleet, and the roadside provider for each vehicle group.
Drivers should know where the vehicle manual is stored, how to report a warning, what location details dispatch needs, and which charging sites are approved. Dispatchers should be able to see the truck’s state of charge where remote monitoring is enabled, check the next delivery constraints, and authorize a stop or reassignment before the battery becomes critical.
After any low-charge event, record the route, payload, weather, warning level, charger status and outcome. That operational record can reveal recurring planning errors, unreliable station information or a mismatch between a truck’s assigned work and its charging access without relying on an invented universal range figure.

Quick Recap
What not to assume
- There is no evidence for one industry-wide warning percentage or guaranteed distance remaining.
- Not every electric truck reduces power in the same way, and “limp mode” is not a universal technical description.
- Not every public charger can accept a commercial truck or provide the required charging power.
- A portable consumer charger, cable, adapter or power bank should not be presented as a proven rescue solution for a depleted delivery truck.
- A procedure written for a Tesla Cybertruck cannot be generalized to another commercial vehicle.
- Manufacturer-described route and monitoring features are service claims; they are not independent performance tests of every truck or route.
