If the equipment is offline, report the fault, confirm the outage with the network, and use a pre-checked alternate site that can physically and electrically handle the truck.
A full charging station and an out-of-service station are different operational problems. Full means the equipment is working but every suitable port is occupied. Out of service means a port or the whole site is unavailable because of a fault, maintenance, communications failure or loss of power. In either case, a truck should not simply drive to the nearest map pin: heavy vehicles need the right connector, charging power, access geometry, account permissions and available capacity.

When every port is occupied
Wait, or reroute
Charging cannot begin until a compatible port is released. A driver can remain in the queue if the site has a managed waiting area and the schedule can absorb the delay, or dispatch can send the truck to another verified location. Waiting in a traffic lane or blocking a charger is unsafe and may violate site rules.

Some charging networks provide an availability notification or waitlist. ChargePoint, for example, says its Notify Me and Waitlist features apply only at participating ChargePoint stations, and the station host must enable Waitlist. Its notification indicates that another vehicle has finished charging; it does not hold the connector for the next driver. A driver can still arrive after someone else has taken the port.

Estimate the operational impact
Queue time depends on the vehicles ahead, their state of charge, the power shared by the site and whether a port becomes unavailable. It cannot be calculated from the station’s advertised maximum power alone. Dispatch should compare the likely wait with the detour and charging time at another site, while allowing for traffic, loading windows and legally required driver breaks.
When the charger is offline or broken
Confirm what failed
The U.S. Joint Office of Energy and Transportation treats a temporarily unavailable station as out of service or offline, including equipment taken down for maintenance. One failed dispenser may leave other ports usable; a communications fault may make a port appear unavailable even when it has power; and a depot-wide utility outage can disable every charger. Check the station’s live status in the network application or station locator, then inspect the display and indicator lights when safe.
Report the fault and obtain an estimate
- Record the station name or identification number, port number, displayed error and time of failure.
- Use the network application or the telephone number posted on the charger to report the problem.
- Ask whether the operator has confirmed the outage, whether another port is functional and whether a restoration estimate exists.
- Tell dispatch that the estimate is not a guarantee; leave for the alternate site if the route or delivery schedule cannot tolerate the uncertainty.
The charger operator is normally the party that can confirm a known fault and maintenance status. Volvo’s charging guidance, for instance, notes that many public chargers are operated by third parties and directs customers to the operator for a specific charger problem. A vehicle manufacturer or fleet manager may be unable to reset equipment owned by another network.

If the whole depot has lost power
First determine whether only one charger, one electrical panel or the entire facility is affected. Follow the site’s electrical-safety procedure; do not open equipment or attempt an improvised repair. PG&E’s fleet guidance recommends prioritizing vehicles supporting critical services, then rerouting to another powered fleet site, a public station or a contracted charging location. A fleet without backup generation can arrange temporary charging with another local organization or use a charging-as-a-service facility.
How to choose a usable alternate station
A nearby location is suitable only after it passes every check below. PG&E identifies vehicle fit, connector compatibility, payment, travel time, available capacity and outage demand as core checks. NJDEP notes that most medium- and heavy-duty vehicles need pull-through spaces, and California’s ZEV TruckStop program cautions that public heavy-duty charging remains limited in many areas.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center fleet toolkit warns that heavy-duty trucks require high-power equipment and that a vehicle from one manufacturer may not align with a charger from another. Do not assume a universal adapter, ordinary passenger-car charger or portable cable will solve a truck-charging failure; verify the truck and equipment specifications first.

Driver procedure at a full or failed station
- Make the vehicle safe. Park only in the designated waiting or charging area, apply the parking brake and keep access lanes clear. If the site is unsafe, leave rather than troubleshooting beside live equipment or moving traffic.
- Identify the condition. A session showing another vehicle connected is a capacity issue. An error code, blank screen, damaged cable or unavailable status is an equipment or communications issue.
- Check every compatible port. Confirm that a port marked available can accommodate the truck’s connector, cable reach and vehicle dimensions. Do not occupy a passenger-car bay while waiting for a truck bay unless the operator explicitly permits it.
- Use the network’s queue tools. Join an enabled waitlist or request an availability alert, but continue evaluating alternatives because neither tool guarantees a space.
- Contact the operator for a failure. Provide the port number and error, ask whether a reset is authorized remotely and obtain a case number if one is issued. Never bypass a safety interlock or repeatedly reconnect a damaged cable.
- Send dispatch the facts. Report the truck’s location, state of charge, estimated remaining range, cargo or service priority, queue position if known and the time required to reach each alternate.
- Choose the safest feasible plan. Dispatch should authorize waiting only when the remaining range and delivery window support it. Otherwise follow the preplanned alternate route and tell the receiving site about the revised arrival time.
How long can the delay and charging stop be?
No single delay figure applies without the station, truck model, state of charge, requested energy, traffic and repair status. A queue or detour adds an unknown amount before charging even starts. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection reports these broad full-charge ranges for most medium- and heavy-duty vehicles:

These are charging-time ranges, not predictions for a wait, repair or detour. A truck may stop before full if dispatch has calculated that enough energy is available for the next leg, and charging power can taper as the battery fills. Conversely, cold weather, a heavily loaded vehicle, shared site power or a derated charger can extend the stop.

Build a verified backup map
For each route, record several alternatives rather than one “nearest” station. For every site, keep the connector and power details, truck-access instructions, opening hours, fleet-account method, payment fallback, contact number and a route that works at the truck’s actual range. Recheck the list whenever a vehicle, connector or route changes.

Separate grid risks
Include at least one backup on a different part of the electric grid where practical. PG&E specifically advises fleets to identify several alternatives because public chargers may become occupied during widespread outages. A second location in the same outage area is not genuine redundancy.
Set dispatch priorities
Define in advance which vehicles receive scarce charging capacity: emergency or critical-service trucks first, then vehicles with the least remaining range or the least flexible delivery windows. Give drivers authority to reroute within those rules, and establish who can approve a paid or contracted charging site.
Rehearse the failure mode
Practice a scenario in which a depot loses power, a public site is full and the next alternate is unavailable. Test whether drivers can authenticate, whether trailers can maneuver and whether the route leaves enough energy margin. Keep the response instructions available offline because a network outage may also prevent the driver from loading an app or retrieving account details.

Monitoring and maintenance that reduce surprises
Depot-management systems can show charger status, issue alarms and, on some installations, support booking or remote diagnosis. Volvo describes real-time status, alerts and booking functions for certain charging access arrangements. ABB describes remote diagnosis and technician support for depot equipment. These tools can shorten detection and service response, but they cannot guarantee that a public port will be vacant or that a third-party operator will repair a fault immediately.
Track recurring failures by port, time of day, weather and vehicle. A pattern may indicate a connector problem, site power constraint, authentication fault or vehicle-to-charger compatibility issue. Escalate repeated failures to the equipment owner and electrical contractor rather than treating every event as an isolated driver error.
Common mistakes and safer alternatives
- Driving to the closest pin: replace distance-only routing with a compatibility, access and availability check.
- Assuming “available” means truck-ready: verify the port, cable reach, pull-through geometry and account permissions.
- Treating a waitlist as a reservation: keep a second route active until the truck is actually connected.
- Using a passenger-car charger by default: confirm power, connector and physical capacity for the heavy vehicle.
- Relying on one backup: maintain multiple sites and include a location outside the likely outage area.
- Attempting an improvised repair: report the fault and use qualified operator or electrical support.
- Ignoring the truck’s remaining range: make the reroute decision before the vehicle reaches a point where it cannot safely reach another site.
What drivers and dispatchers should remember
An occupied station calls for a queue decision; an offline station calls for fault reporting and a reroute decision. Both require the same discipline at the planning stage: know which sites can serve the truck, keep more than one backup, confirm live conditions before committing to a detour and preserve enough energy to reach the chosen alternative. Heavy-duty public charging is expanding, but its coverage and truck-friendly design are not yet as universal as passenger-car charging, so a verified contingency plan remains part of normal electric-truck operations.
