What Happens When an Autonomous Truck Loses Connectivity or Has a System Failure?

A lost network connection does not automatically mean an autonomous truck has lost control. Onboard fault management determines whether it can continue safely or must move toward a minimal risk condition, while remote staff may advise and coordinate help rather than drive the truck.

Short answer: a lost communications link and a failure in the truck’s automated driving system are different events. A truck may lose its cellular or fleet connection while its onboard perception, planning, steering and braking continue to work. If a safety-critical onboard function, vehicle component or power system fails, the automated driving system is designed to detect the problem and move toward a minimal risk condition—often a controlled stop, preferably outside an active lane when that is feasible.

There is no industry-wide timer that tells every autonomous truck to stop after a fixed number of seconds without connectivity, and no guarantee that every failure ends with a shoulder stop. The exact response depends on the vehicle, its operating area, the failed component, traffic and road conditions, the automation level and the operator’s procedures.

Connectivity loss is not the same as an autonomous-driving failure

“Connectivity” can mean several things: a cellular link to a fleet center, a data connection used for monitoring, a command-center channel, or a communications function that the vehicle itself considers safety-critical. Losing one of these links does not automatically mean that the truck has lost its ability to perceive the road or control itself.

Public descriptions do not establish a universal rule for how long a truck may continue after a network interruption. They also do not support a blanket instruction such as “stop immediately” or “continue for 10 minutes.” A system may be able to continue in a degraded state if its onboard safety functions remain healthy, or it may decide that the communications fault creates too much risk and begin a fallback maneuver.

The important question is where the failure sits. An offboard connection can disappear while onboard sensors and computers remain available. A failure in perception, localization, motion planning, steering, braking, power distribution or another safety-critical function directly changes what the vehicle can safely do.

Event What may still work Likely safety objective What is not established publicly
Cellular or command-center link lost Onboard sensing, planning and vehicle control may continue if they remain healthy Continue only if the system judges that safe; otherwise transition toward a controlled stop A common timeout, distance limit or mandatory immediate stop
Sensor or autonomy-computer fault Redundant or unaffected functions may remain available, depending on design Use a degraded mode only when safe, or initiate fallback to a minimal risk condition One maneuver or stopping time shared by all manufacturers
Steering, braking, vehicle-platform or power fault Backup systems may provide limited control, depending on the truck Reach the safest controllable state available, normally with a controlled stop Guaranteed ability to reach a shoulder in every road and traffic situation

How an autonomous truck handles an onboard system failure

The fallback concept comes from the vehicle’s safety design, not from a remote human improvising a maneuver. NHTSA’s Federal Automated Vehicles Policy describes fallback as the response when an automated driving system malfunctions, becomes degraded or can no longer operate within its intended conditions. For higher automation in which no driver is available to take over, the guidance says the vehicle should be capable of reaching a “minimal risk condition” independently.

NHTSA’s wording is deliberately conditional: the appropriate minimal risk condition depends on the type and extent of the failure. It may involve slowing, stopping in a controlled way or moving to a safer location. A stop outside an active traffic lane is preferred when feasible, but a shoulder is not always reachable or safe. A truck on a narrow road, in heavy traffic, near a work zone or on a grade may have fewer options than a truck on a wide divided highway.

Fault detection comes before the fallback maneuver

Modern automated trucks monitor the health of multiple layers at once. Aurora says its Fault Management System checks the truck, autonomy software, sensors and onboard computers, then selects a mitigation strategy when it detects a fault. The company identifies perception, forecasting, motion planning, localization, control, steering, braking, communications and power supply or distribution as safety-critical areas in its system.

Aurora gives a specific example: its system can evaluate loss of data from the front-center lidar sensor as a potentially critical safety risk and trigger fault mitigation. That is a description of Aurora’s architecture, not proof that every autonomous truck uses the same sensor arrangement or thresholds. The practical principle is broader: the vehicle must determine whether the remaining hardware and software can still perform the driving task safely.

Redundancy can preserve control, but it is not a promise of normal operation

Redundant sensors, computers, power paths or vehicle controls can allow a truck to keep a limited level of capability after one component fails. Redundancy does not mean the truck will continue its route normally. It gives the safety system more options while it evaluates whether to proceed, slow down or stop.

In a 2026 SEC filing, Kodiak describes redundant systems and says that a failure of a safety-critical Kodiak Driver function or underlying vehicle component can initiate a fallback maneuver that brings the truck to a controlled stop. That is Kodiak’s filed description of its system and should not be read as independently verified performance for every possible failure or for every autonomous-truck design.

What “minimal risk condition” means on the road

A minimal risk condition is an outcome, not one fixed maneuver. The objective is to reduce danger after the system can no longer continue safely in its current state. Depending on the location and failure, the truck may decelerate in its lane, move to a safer position if it can do so reliably, and stop with its hazard and warning procedures engaged. The system has to balance the risk of moving against the risk of remaining where it is.

  • On a multi-lane highway: a controlled move toward a shoulder or other refuge may be possible, but only if steering, perception and surrounding-traffic assessment remain reliable.
  • On a two-lane road: crossing the centerline or entering a soft shoulder could be more dangerous than stopping in the travel lane, so the safest available option may be a lane stop followed by warnings and assistance.
  • During a severe power or braking fault: the truck may have to use whatever braking and control capacity remains; the resulting stopping location cannot be guaranteed in advance.
  • When the system is degraded but still safe: it may continue temporarily under a restricted operating condition before selecting a suitable stopping opportunity.

NHTSA’s guidance is voluntary. It describes the safety goal for automated vehicles, not a federally guaranteed maneuver that every manufacturer must execute identically.

Can a remote operator take control?

Remote support and remote driving are different functions. A command center may monitor the truck, provide context, suggest a course of action or arrange roadside help without directly steering or braking the vehicle.

Aurora says its command center can offer suggestions and coordinate roadside assistance, while “the Aurora Driver always retains full control over the vehicle.” In that description, the automated system may reject or adapt a recommendation if following it would not be safe. This is a company-specific account, not an industry-wide rule. Other operators may use different communication and assistance architectures, and the public materials do not establish one common remote-control standard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the connection to the command center disappears, a remote employee cannot be assumed to be able to drive the truck. The vehicle’s own fallback logic must remain safe without a live human steering every movement. A remote specialist may become useful again when communications return, but that does not eliminate the need for onboard fault handling.

Why the automation level changes the answer

NHTSA describes Level 4 automation as a system that performs the entire driving task within limited service areas without requiring a human driver to maneuver. A Level 4 truck therefore needs an independent fallback capability for situations in which the automated system can no longer continue safely.

Lower automation levels may assume that an attentive human driver is present and can resume control after a warning. In those vehicles, a communications interruption could be handled differently because the driver remains part of the safety design. A driverless Level 4 truck cannot rely on an absent driver to take over, so its own sensors, computers, actuators and fallback procedures must determine the response.

Typical sequence after a fault or loss of connectivity

The exact implementation varies, but the safety logic can be understood as a sequence of decisions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Detect the abnormal condition. Health monitors identify a missing sensor stream, computer fault, actuator problem, power anomaly, communications loss or software condition outside the system’s permitted range.
  2. Classify its safety importance. The truck assesses whether the event is minor, whether a redundant function is available, or whether the failure affects a function needed for safe driving.
  3. Check the current driving context. The system considers lane position, traffic, road geometry, weather, speed and available stopping locations. A maneuver that is safe on one road may not be safe on another.
  4. Choose continued operation or mitigation. If the remaining capability is sufficient, the truck may continue under the conditions its design allows. If not, it begins a fallback maneuver toward a minimal risk condition.
  5. Control the stop. The truck uses the steering and braking capacity that remains to slow and stop as safely as possible. A shoulder stop is preferred when feasible, not guaranteed.
  6. Communicate and request assistance when possible. The system or operator may notify a fleet center, provide the truck’s status and location, and arrange inspection, repair, recovery or roadside support.
  7. Apply local warning and recovery procedures. Once stopped, the operator must follow the rules and procedures that apply to that vehicle, road and jurisdiction.

What happens after the truck stops?

A fallback stop is not the end of the incident. The truck may need warning devices, an inspection, a software or sensor reset, mechanical repair, towing or recovery. The response depends on the failure and on where the truck stopped. A vehicle blocking a live lane creates a different roadside problem from one fully clear of traffic.

In the United States, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration announced a limited exemption effective October 7, 2026, through October 7, 2031. It allows Aurora and other qualifying Level 4 commercial carriers, with prior notice, to use cab-mounted warning beacons instead of specified traditional warning devices. FMCSA said it expected the exemption to provide an equivalent or greater level of safety. The exemption is narrow: it covers a particular warning-device requirement for eligible carriers and does not define the complete response to every autonomous-truck breakdown, nor does it apply automatically in other countries.

What public information does not tell us

Public company and government materials do not establish a universal network-loss threshold, guaranteed response time, maximum distance before stopping or common remote-assistance architecture. They also do not provide a single failure rate, stopping distance or incident count that can be applied to the autonomous-truck industry.

Those unknowns matter because behavior depends on vehicle design, operating domain, location, system state and operator procedure. A communications link used for convenience may be treated differently from one that the safety case identifies as essential. Likewise, a failed lidar, computer, brake circuit or power-distribution component can produce different fallback options. Any claim that all autonomous trucks freeze, pull onto the shoulder, wait for a remote driver or continue for a fixed time goes beyond what the cited public guidance establishes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What other drivers should expect

If an autonomous truck slows unexpectedly or stops, treat it as a disabled or potentially disabled commercial vehicle. Reduce speed early, leave extra following distance, change lanes only when legal and safe, and watch for warning lights, beacons, personnel or recovery vehicles. Do not assume that a stopped truck can immediately move because a remote operator has been contacted; the truck may be waiting for inspection or may have lost a safety-critical capability.

The core distinction is simple: connectivity supports supervision and coordination, while the truck’s onboard safety system is responsible for detecting whether it can keep driving. When that system cannot establish safe continued operation, its intended outcome is a controlled transition to a minimal risk condition—not a guaranteed shoulder stop and not necessarily remote human driving.
