If a plug-in hybrid ute’s displayed electric-only range reaches zero, it will normally leave EV-only driving and continue in hybrid mode. The petrol engine starts as needed, the electric motor keeps assisting, and the control system protects a usable high-voltage battery reserve. In normal circumstances, the ute does not simply stop at the moment the display says zero.
You still need petrol. A zero EV-range display is not the same event as a failed traction battery, nor is it the same as a flat 12-volt auxiliary battery. The exact blend of engine and motor varies by model, load, temperature and market, so the vehicle’s own owner’s manual remains the authority for warnings and operating limits.

What “zero electric range” actually means
The number on the instrument panel is an estimate of how far the ute can travel using its plug-in electric driving capability under current conditions. It is not a direct readout of every watt-hour remaining in the high-voltage pack. When the estimate reaches zero, the battery-management system normally retains enough charge for hybrid functions such as propulsion assistance, starting the engine, and regenerative braking.

The statement describes normal range depletion, not a guarantee that a ute with a damaged battery, an electrical isolation fault or another warning will continue.

Use the wording “the displayed electric-only range reaches zero” rather than “the battery is completely flat.” A genuinely failed or severely depleted traction battery is a fault condition and must be handled according to the warning message and manual.
Three different situations that are often confused

How the ute drives after EV-only range is used
Hybrid operation replaces EV-only operation
Once the electric-only estimate is exhausted, the control software changes the operating strategy automatically. The petrol engine supplies power, and the motor can add torque during acceleration, hill climbing or towing. Depending on the design, the engine may also produce electricity for the motor or recharge the high-voltage battery within its permitted operating window.
You do not normally need to press a special “rescue” button. Keep the vehicle in its normal drive setting, watch that the READY indicator is present, and follow any messages on the instrument display. The transition can be almost unnoticeable, or you may hear the engine start and feel a change in response.
Series and parallel behaviour are model-specific
Mitsubishi’s official plug-in-hybrid guidance describes two operating patterns. In series operation, the engine drives a generator and the electric motor drives the wheels. In parallel operation, generally at higher road speeds or under suitable conditions, the engine can provide direct drive with motor assistance. Ford describes its Ranger’s hybrid state more generally as both engine and motor powering the vehicle.

Those descriptions should not be treated as a universal specification for every plug-in hybrid ute. Some vehicles use different clutches, gearsets and control logic, and the changeover speed depends on software, load and temperature. The Mitsubishi explanation comes from an Outlander SUV manual, not a ute manual, so it is useful for illustrating possible modes rather than proving how every ute operates.
Regenerative braking can recover some energy
When you lift off the accelerator or brake, the electric motor can operate as a generator and send some energy back to the high-voltage battery. Ford identifies regenerative braking as one way energy is captured and stored. Mitsubishi cautions that the amount recovered depends on battery state and other conditions.
Regeneration does not restore the original plug-in range on demand. It recovers only a portion of energy that would otherwise be lost during slowing, and the system may limit regeneration when the battery is cold, hot or already near its permitted upper charge level. Do not plan a trip on the assumption that downhill driving will refill the battery enough to return to EV-only operation.
Why the engine may start before the display reaches zero
A plug-in hybrid can start its engine while the dashboard still shows electric range. That is normal when the system needs more power, heat or battery protection than EV-only operation can provide.

- Strong acceleration: Joining a motorway, overtaking or climbing a steep grade can exceed the motor’s preferred EV-only power level.
- Hills and heavy loads: A ute carrying a payload or towing a trailer demands sustained power. The engine may run to protect performance and battery temperature.
- Cabin heating or cooling: Extreme heating or air-conditioning demand can make engine operation more efficient or necessary for comfort.
- A cold engine: The control system may run the engine to reach operating temperature, meet emissions requirements or provide heat.
- Low battery charge under the estimate: The displayed range is an estimate, and conditions such as speed, wind, tyres, gradients and temperature can consume the available EV energy faster than expected.
Ford lists these factors in its Ranger guidance. An engine starting early is therefore not evidence that the traction battery has failed.
Petrol is still essential
After electric-only range reaches zero, the ute’s ability to continue depends on having fuel for the engine. Mitsubishi’s official PHEV FAQ says that when traction-battery charge falls during driving, EV mode ends automatically and the vehicle changes to series or parallel operation; continued driving is possible if petrol remains. The FAQ was updated on 5 January 2026 and says its site content applies to the Japanese domestic market, so treat it as corroboration and check the manual for your vehicle’s country and model year.
Mitsubishi’s Outlander owner’s manual explains the practical consequence of running out of fuel: the engine may not start when the system needs it for generation, vehicle performance can be reduced, and cabin heating can be impaired. A ute may therefore still have charge in the high-voltage battery yet be unable to maintain normal operation once the fuel tank is empty. Do not use the battery reserve as a reason to postpone refuelling.

- Confirm the vehicle is in normal READY operation. Check for the READY indicator and read the entire instrument message. A routine “EV range 0” indication is different from a red powertrain warning or a command to stop.
- Drive conservatively. Avoid unnecessary full-throttle acceleration, high speeds and abrupt towing loads. Smooth driving gives the control system more opportunity to use the engine and motor efficiently.
- Keep the fuel level in mind. Treat the ute as a petrol hybrid now, and refuel at the next practical opportunity. Do not assume the remaining hybrid reserve represents a guaranteed distance.
- Watch temperature and load conditions. A long climb, trailer, extreme heat or cold, or intensive cabin heating can cause more engine operation and reduced performance.
- Recharge when you can. Connect to the vehicle’s approved charging equipment after the trip or at a compatible public charger. Follow the model’s instructions for charging status, connector locking and operating temperatures.
- Consult the exact manual for persistent messages. Model year, market and software calibration affect operating modes. The 2024 Ranger manual, for example, is not a substitute for the manual supplied with a different ute or a later revision.
When zero range becomes a fault
Stop treating the event as routine if the display adds a high-voltage, powertrain or electrical-system warning; the vehicle enters a limited-power mode; the READY indicator disappears; or the manual tells you to stop safely. Move out of traffic if possible, switch on hazard lights and follow the manufacturer’s roadside or service instructions.

Do not work on orange high-voltage cables, open battery enclosures or attempt an improvised jump-start to the traction battery. If the 12-volt system is discharged, use only the jump-start procedure and connection points specified for that model, or call qualified roadside assistance. A low 12-volt battery can prevent the vehicle from entering READY even though the high-voltage pack is charged.
If the ute stops because it has run out of petrol, adding fuel may not immediately restore normal operation if air has entered the fuel system or a protection procedure is required. Follow the manual’s restart sequence and obtain assistance if the engine will not start or a warning remains.

There is no general, reliable number of kilometres that every plug-in hybrid ute can travel after the display reaches zero. The usable reserve, engine efficiency, battery temperature, road speed, gradient, payload, trailer, wind, tyre condition and accessory loads all vary. Official guidance reviewed for this topic does not provide a universal remaining-battery percentage, fuel-economy penalty or guaranteed distance.
The display itself is also dynamic. A cold morning, headwind or heavy trailer can make the estimate fall quickly, while gentle urban driving may allow more electric assistance through regeneration. Use the range figure as planning information, not as a promise, and keep a fuel margin for locations where refuelling is difficult.

Planning for regular ute use
For short daily trips
Charge before departure when practical and let the vehicle select its operating mode. If the day’s driving exceeds the electric estimate, plan the trip around fuel availability rather than trying to preserve every last electric kilometre. Payload and accessories should be included in your expectation of when the engine will start.
For towing, remote travel or long grades
Begin with a full fuel tank and a charged battery, but expect the engine to run early under sustained load. Identify refuelling points, especially where public charging is sparse, and carry out the manufacturer’s checks for trailer mass, tyre pressures and cooling requirements. A plug-in hybrid’s electric assistance can remain useful after EV range reaches zero, yet it does not remove the need for petrol or recovery planning.
For cold or very hot weather
Allow for engine starts and reduced electric range when heating, demisting or cooling demand is high. Pre-conditioning while connected to a charger can reduce the energy needed from the battery after departure, but it cannot eliminate the effects of extreme conditions during a long drive.

How to interpret the manufacturers’ guidance
Ford’s Ranger owner-manual section directly documents the normal switch to hybrid operation at zero electric-only range, lists conditions that can start the engine early, and describes regenerative braking and service warnings. Mitsubishi’s FAQ, published 27 May 2022 and updated 5 January 2026, explains automatic changes to series or parallel operation when traction-battery charge falls, while its Outlander manual gives model-specific details about fuel depletion, heating and regeneration.
Because the Mitsubishi material concerns an SUV and a Japanese-market FAQ, and the Ford document identifies a 2024 Ranger manual, neither should be read as a specification for every plug-in hybrid ute sold elsewhere. Before relying on a procedure, verify the model year, market, drive system, warning symbols and fuel requirements in your own manual.
