Report the disappearance to local police immediately and notify the insurer. Give authorities every identifier and provenance record you have, then let police coordinate database checks, cross-border inquiries and any recovery. A historic competition car may have old registrations, replaced components or unusual frame numbers, so photographs, chassis and engine records, event images, restoration invoices and ownership documents can be as important as its current registration.
The exact process depends on the country, police service and insurance policy. The UK, United States and Northern Ireland procedures below illustrate the main stages, not a universal legal checklist.

1. Make the scene safe and report the disappearance
First establish whether anyone is in danger or whether the theft is still in progress. Use the appropriate local emergency number in those circumstances. If the car was discovered missing later and there is no immediate threat, use your police service’s non-emergency reporting route. Prompt reporting improves the chance of recovery, according to the FBI’s motor-vehicle-theft guidance.

Keep the distinction between “stolen” and “missing” until the facts are established. Tell police that the car has disappeared and provide the circumstances; investigators determine how the case is classified.

United Kingdom
GOV.UK guidance says to contact the local police station on 101, provide the registration, make and model, and colour, and obtain a crime reference number. Call 999 instead when a crime is happening or someone faces immediate danger. The crime reference is needed when you contact the insurer.
United States
The FBI advises reporting the theft promptly to local law enforcement and contacting the insurer immediately. Local departments set the reporting number and evidence requirements, so use the department responsible for the location where the car disappeared.
2. Notify the insurer and follow its claim instructions
Call the insurer as soon as the police report has been made, or at the same time if the insurer’s claims line directs you to do so. Provide the crime reference or incident number and follow the policy’s instructions for documents, statements, keys, security devices and valuation evidence. GOV.UK says the insurer will explain how to make a claim; the FBI likewise advises immediate insurer contact.

General theft guidance does not establish a universal deadline, deductible, agreed-value rule, exclusion, recovery-cost provision or settlement formula. Those terms come from the actual policy. A competition-car policy may also require specific evidence of declared modifications, race use, storage arrangements or ownership, so read the schedule and endorsements rather than assuming ordinary road-car cover applies.
If the insurer pays a claim
Payment can change who controls the vehicle and what you must do with its registration. In the UK, GOV.UK says the owner must tell the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency that the vehicle has been sold to the insurer after an insurer payout. That is a UK-specific administrative step, not a rule that can be applied to every country or policy. Ask the insurer and the relevant registration authority what happens to title, salvage and any later recovery in your jurisdiction.
3. Assemble an identity and provenance file
Historic racing cars often have more complicated identities than modern road cars. A chassis may have been renumbered, an engine replaced, a shell rebuilt or a competition registration changed over decades. Give police a concise fact sheet and preserve the originals of supporting records.

Identifiers to provide
- Current and historic registration numbers, including competition or event registrations.
- Chassis, frame, body or tub number, exactly as stamped or recorded.
- Engine number and the make, model, year and configuration of the car.
- Colour, livery, sponsor markings, wheel style and other visible features.
- Distinctive modifications, repairs, roll-cage details, vents, decals, welds or damage.
- Recent photographs from several angles, including close-ups of identification marks.
For a race car, add photographs from events, timing or entry records, old registration documents, purchase and sale records, restoration photographs, invoices and correspondence that links the components to the car. The DVSA’s INF318 guidance says keepers should gather reliable evidence of a historic vehicle’s identity and work history; receipts should detail major components and their provenance. The same principle helps investigators distinguish a genuine car from a body or collection of parts carrying a familiar name.

Send copies where possible and keep a dated inventory of what you supplied, to whom and when. Do not clean, repaint, remove parts or handle suspected tools, locks or entry points at the scene. Police may need those details for forensic work. If you receive a credible sighting, save the original message, photographs, location and time, and pass it to the investigating officer rather than confronting anyone.
4. Police databases and an overseas sighting
Police can record the report and circulate the identifiers through national systems. If the car may have crossed a border, police in INTERPOL member countries can check the INTERPOL Stolen Motor Vehicle database. INTERPOL says the database contains more than 12 million records and that around 226,000 motor vehicles were identified as stolen through it in 2023. Those are all-vehicle figures, not statistics for historic racing cars.

INTERPOL’s vehicle-crime information notes that cars stolen in Europe have been found as far away as South America and Australia. The organization does not investigate individual thefts or arrest people; it directs crime reports to national or local police. An owner therefore reports to the police in the country where the disappearance occurred, keeps that report current and supplies police with evidence of an overseas lead.
What you should not do
- Do not try to recover the car yourself from a private address, workshop, transporter or auction site.
- Do not threaten or negotiate with a suspected thief.
- Do not publish sensitive location or security information that could cause the car to be moved.
- Do not assume an online listing proves the identity; send the listing, seller details and images to police and the insurer.
Police cooperation is essential because a database hit may involve seizure powers, border procedures and evidence rules that differ from those in your home country.
5. What happens when police locate the car?
Police may secure the vehicle and arrange its removal to a contracted recovery or storage facility. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) explains that its contracted recovery operator removes located stolen vehicles to safekeeping and that the vehicle may be preserved for forensic examination.

Recovery, storage and examination
Expect police to document the condition, inspect identification marks and decide whether forensic examination is required. In Northern Ireland, PSNI warns that removal and storage charges may be payable. Other police services set their own arrangements and fees. Ask the investigating officer who controls access, where the car is stored, whether an examination is pending and what paperwork is required before release.
If you find the car before police do
Notify police without delay and leave the vehicle where it is unless officers instruct otherwise. PSNI guidance warns that self-arranged removal is at the owner’s risk. Moving the car can destroy fingerprints, tool marks, trace evidence or evidence of how it was transported. Contact the insurer before authorising transport, dismantling or repairs.
6. Collection and repairs after recovery
Do not assume that proof of ownership lets you collect or move a recovered race car immediately. Police may retain it until examination, and an insurer that has paid a claim may control the vehicle or its disposal. Obtain written instructions from both police and the insurer covering release, approved transport, inspection, storage charges and authority to repair.

8. A practical incident checklist
- Move to safety and call the appropriate emergency service if the theft is active or anyone is at risk.
- Report the disappearance promptly through the responsible local police route.
- Write down the incident or crime reference number, reporting officer and contact method.
- Notify the insurer and ask what documents, inspections and deadlines apply to the policy.
- Send police a fact sheet containing every registration, chassis or frame number, engine number, photograph and distinctive mark.
- Provide copies of provenance records, restoration invoices and component documents; retain the originals.
- Preserve messages, listings, CCTV details, GPS data and witness contacts without confronting a suspect.
- Ask police to consider relevant national and INTERPOL checks if an overseas movement is plausible.
- If located, wait for police and insurer instructions before moving, cleaning, dismantling or repairing the car.
- Document the recovered condition and keep all transport, storage and inspection paperwork.
9. What remains uncertain after a recovery or payout?
A recovered car may be evidence, an insurance asset or both. The sources above do not establish a universal rule for title, salvage ownership, return after a payout, storage liability or the treatment of a car assembled from historic components. Those outcomes depend on local law, the registration system and the wording of the insurance contract. For a disputed ownership or title question, obtain advice from the relevant registration authority, insurer and a qualified lawyer in the jurisdiction involved.
