Rarely driving an electric car usually does not ruin its high-voltage battery. The car can still consume energy while parked, however, and charge can fall over time. The separate 12-volt battery may be the first problem you encounter because it powers the vehicle’s control systems and can discharge during long periods of inactivity. Storage limits, charging intervals and whether the car should stay plugged in vary by model, so the owner’s manual is the final authority.
What happens while an EV is parked?
An EV is not completely “off” when it is sitting in a driveway. Battery-management hardware, security functions, communications equipment and other systems may wake periodically. The high-voltage pack can also supply energy to maintain the 12-volt battery.

The high-voltage battery can slowly lose charge
Tesla’s Model Y manual says an idle, unplugged vehicle periodically uses energy for system tests and to recharge its 12-volt battery when needed. Hyundai similarly warns that high-voltage charge may decrease even when the vehicle is not being driven. The amount varies with the vehicle, software, temperature and connected features; the cited manufacturers do not establish a universal percentage of charge lost per day.
That means a car parked for several weeks may show a lower state of charge even though it has not moved. A modest decrease is normal. A rapid or unexpected drop should be investigated through the vehicle’s diagnostics or by the manufacturer.

The 12-volt battery can be the immediate failure point
The traction battery and the 12-volt battery are separate storage systems. The 12-volt unit runs low-voltage electronics and helps the car start its control systems. If it becomes discharged, the vehicle may not unlock, boot or shift even when the high-voltage gauge still shows substantial charge.
Ford of Canada notes that the 12-volt battery can drain faster than the high-voltage battery during storage, particularly when the vehicle is connected. Ford’s guidance for vehicles parked longer than 30 days therefore focuses heavily on the 12-volt battery. The exact maintenance method depends on the model.
Can infrequent driving damage the EV battery?
Infrequent driving by itself is not identified in the cited manufacturer guidance as a cause of automatic battery failure. The greater risks are storing the high-voltage pack at an unsuitable state of charge, leaving the vehicle at an extreme temperature and allowing either battery to become fully discharged.

Long storage at very low charge is the main avoidable risk
Hyundai’s 2026 owner manual says to keep the high-voltage gauge from going below 10% during long storage. It warns that storing the battery at a low charge for a long time can damage it or reduce capacity. Tesla’s Model Y manual likewise warns that allowing charge to fall to 0% can damage other components.
These figures are model-specific examples, not a universal rule for every EV. Some vehicles have a manufacturer-defined storage target or a special “transport” or “long-term storage” procedure. Use the percentage and charging instructions for your exact model and market rather than applying another brand’s limit.
Temperature affects stored-battery performance
Hyundai cautions that storing the vehicle in temperatures that are too high or too low may degrade battery performance. A car left outside through severe heat or cold can therefore behave differently from one stored in a moderate garage. Temperature protection may require leaving the vehicle connected, but only when the manual says that is appropriate.

There is no reliable universal daily-loss number
Manufacturers do not publish one parked-drain rate that applies to all EVs. Energy use can change with climate-control protection, remote-access features, alarm activity, software updates, battery temperature and the condition of the 12-volt battery. Treat a stated percentage as valid only for the model, conditions and source that provided it.

Use this process as a checklist, then replace each general step with the instruction in your model’s manual.

- Find the long-storage section in the manual. Search the digital manual for “long-term storage,” “vehicle storage,” “high-voltage battery,” “12-volt battery” and “more than 30 days.” Confirm the market and model year because instructions can differ between versions.
- Set the state of charge to the stated storage range. Do not leave the traction battery nearly empty for months. Hyundai’s cited 2026 guidance says not to let the gauge fall below 10%; Ford’s 2020 unplugged-storage range is 10%–80%. Those numbers are examples, not a universal prescription.
- Decide whether the car should remain plugged in. Tesla specifically says to leave Model Y plugged in when unused, especially for several weeks. Ford describes different options for its electrified vehicles. Do not assume that unplugging is safer or that continuous connection is required without checking your manual.
- Plan the 12-volt maintenance method. Hyundai says to charge at least once every three months during long non-use. Ford lists a model-dependent choice among disconnecting the 12-volt negative terminal, leaving a plug-in vehicle connected or using a standard 12-volt charger on continuous slow charge. A generic charger is not automatically suitable for every EV or battery, so follow the vehicle’s instructions.
- Reduce avoidable environmental stress. Park in a place that avoids excessive heat or cold when possible. Hyundai warns that extreme storage temperatures may degrade performance. Do not activate remote climate control or repeatedly wake the car just to check it unless necessary; those functions can consume energy.
- Record the date and gauge reading. A note in the vehicle app or your calendar lets you see how long the car has been idle and whether its charge is changing unusually. It also tells you when a model-specific maintenance charge is due.
- Inspect before driving again. Check the high-voltage state of charge, warning messages and 12-volt status. If the vehicle will not unlock or boot, or if the gauge has reached an empty state after extended storage, use the recovery procedure in the manual or contact the manufacturer or roadside service rather than improvising with high-voltage components.
What to do if the car has already sat for months
If the car still starts normally
Read the current state of charge and compare it with the storage limit in your manual. If it is low, charge using the normal equipment and settings specified for the vehicle. Look for a 12-volt warning, unusual alerts or a sudden change in the estimated range. A single low reading does not prove permanent capacity loss, but a continuing decline while parked warrants service advice.
If the 12-volt battery is flat
Symptoms can include no response from the locks, a dark instrument display or an inability to select Drive. The correct jump-start, charging or terminal-disconnection procedure is model-specific. Ford’s published options show why: one vehicle may support a slow 12-volt charger, while another may have a different storage mode. Follow the manual’s recovery steps or call qualified roadside assistance.

If the high-voltage gauge is at or near zero
Do not treat a depleted traction battery like a routine 12-volt battery. Tesla warns that reaching 0% can damage other components, and Hyundai warns against long storage below its stated 10% threshold. Arrange charging or service according to the manufacturer’s procedure, especially if the car has been left at zero for an extended period.

Does rarely driving shorten the battery warranty?
Rare use does not automatically cancel a battery warranty, but warranty terms are vehicle- and market-specific. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center says many manufacturers offer EV battery warranties lasting eight years or 100,000 miles; that is a broad observation, not a promise for a particular car. Read the warranty booklet for coverage, capacity-retention terms, maintenance requirements and exclusions.
Service records can help if a problem develops. Keep evidence of the charging routine, storage dates and any warnings. If capacity appears to fall unusually quickly, ask the manufacturer for a battery-health diagnosis instead of relying only on the dashboard range estimate.
Common storage mistakes and better choices
- Leaving the pack nearly empty: Use the model’s stated minimum or storage range before parking for weeks or months.
- Assuming parked means no consumption: Systems can run periodic checks and maintain the 12-volt battery, so check the gauge during extended non-use.
- Ignoring the 12-volt battery: Follow the specified charging interval or maintainer procedure; the low-voltage battery may fail first.
- Copying another brand’s plug-in rule: Tesla’s Model Y instruction to remain plugged in does not override a different vehicle’s manual.
- Disconnecting a terminal without confirmation: Ford mentions that option for its guidance, but the procedure is not automatically appropriate for every EV.
- Expecting a universal parked-drain percentage: No cited source establishes one. Vehicle settings, software and temperature change the result.
- Storing in severe temperatures without checking precautions: Use the manufacturer’s temperature guidance and choose protected parking when practical.
The practical answer for a rarely driven EV
Driving an EV only occasionally is generally compatible with normal battery life if you prevent prolonged deep discharge and maintain the 12-volt system. Before a long absence, set the high-voltage pack to the model’s recommended range, follow its plug-in instruction, schedule the required maintenance charge and protect the car from temperature extremes. For a specific vehicle, the owner’s manual—not a generic EV rule—determines the correct routine.
