When an electric tugboat’s battery runs low, its response depends on whether the vessel is a hybrid or fully battery-electric design. The battery-management system (BMS) normally warns the crew before the planned reserve is consumed. A hybrid tug can start its combustion engines at a configured minimum state of charge, using them for propulsion and battery recharging. A fully electric tug has no diesel engine to take over, so its crew must reduce the remaining mission, head for an available charger, or follow the vessel’s approved contingency procedure. There is no universal percentage at which every electric tug slows, shuts down, or switches to diesel.
The direct answer: low battery is a managed operating condition, not one automatic event
Electric tugboats are designed around an energy budget. That budget includes the planned work, reserve capacity, weather and sea conditions, maneuvering demands, and the possibility of an emergency. A low-charge alert means the vessel is approaching a configured operating limit; it does not by itself mean propulsion has stopped.

The exact response is set by the tug’s propulsion architecture, software settings, battery installation, operating instructions, and access to shore charging. A hybrid tug may automatically bring its engines online. A battery-only tug must rely on the energy remaining in its battery system and the crew’s operating plan. The approved procedures for a particular vessel take priority over any generic description.
What the crew sees before the battery becomes critical
A marine BMS measures battery state of charge (SOC), while the vessel’s energy-management system (EMS) uses that information alongside power demand and equipment limits. Guidance for propulsion batteries says the system should calculate and display SOC and issue a low-remaining-battery warning. Operators also monitor battery condition, including temperature, because a battery can be constrained by thermal or equipment limits even when its displayed charge is not empty.

- State-of-charge indication: the bridge or machinery display shows remaining usable energy as calculated by the BMS.
- Low-charge warning: an alarm tells the crew that the planned reserve or a configured minimum is being approached.
- Power and temperature information: the EMS/BMS can show demand, battery-motor temperature, and other limits that affect available output.
- Operating response: the crew follows the tug’s procedures, which may include ending a job, proceeding to charge, or invoking a contingency plan.
An alert is therefore an opportunity to act while the vessel still has maneuvering energy. It is not proof that the battery can safely be used down to zero, and it is not a guarantee that propulsion can never be lost.
How a hybrid electric tug responds
A hybrid tug carries both batteries and combustion engines. Its EMS is configured with permitted charging and discharging limits to protect battery life and preserve operating capability. Wärtsilä describes a start-and-stop operating mode in which the battery supplies propulsion at low engine loads. When the battery reaches a preset minimum, the EMS automatically reactivates the engines. The engines then provide propulsion and recharge the batteries.
- Battery power covers lower-load work. During suitable parts of a job, the tug can use stored electrical energy instead of running engines continuously.
- The EMS tracks the configured minimum. The trigger is a vessel-specific setting, not a percentage that applies to every hybrid tug.
- Engines start automatically or under the vessel’s control. In the Wärtsilä mode described above, the EMS reactivates them when the preset minimum is reached.
- Propulsion continues through the engines. The engines can supply the power needed for maneuvering and higher-demand work.
- Excess engine power can recharge the battery. Charging and discharging remain within the limits programmed for the installation.
For tug work, batteries can handle low-load activity while engines provide a boost when more thrust is needed. A hybrid system therefore has an onboard generation source that a fully electric tug does not. However, “hybrid” does not mean unlimited endurance: fuel, engine condition, electrical faults, thermal limits, and the vessel’s operating procedures still determine what is possible.
How a fully electric tug responds
A fully electric tug has no onboard diesel propulsion source to start. When its battery reaches the low-charge warning level, the crew must manage the remaining energy to reach a charger, complete a safe maneuver, or execute the vessel’s contingency procedure. The sequence is specific to the tug and its operating area.
1. The warning is acknowledged and the situation assessed
The crew verifies the displayed SOC, current power demand, battery and motor temperatures, vessel position, weather, traffic, and the next safe opportunity to charge. A tug working at high thrust can consume energy much faster than one idling or making a low-load transit.

2. The planned task is adjusted
Depending on the approved operating instructions, the crew may stop accepting another job, release a tow when safe, reduce unnecessary electrical loads, or proceed directly toward the designated charging location. These are operational decisions, not a universal automatic “limp mode.” The available power and any required reduction are determined by the vessel’s control system and procedures.
3. Reserve energy is protected
The tug’s reserve is intended for conditions such as a higher-than-planned power demand, adverse weather, or emergency operations. It should not be treated as routine working energy. Continuing normal high-thrust work after a reserve warning can leave too little energy for safe maneuvering or a return to the charging berth.
4. The contingency plan is used if charging cannot be reached
Every vessel needs a procedure for abnormal conditions, such as a charger being unavailable, a power-control fault, worsening weather, or an unexpected increase in workload. That procedure may involve assistance from another vessel, a controlled return, a designated safe area, or other actions approved for that tug. The sources available for this topic do not establish one emergency maneuver or shutdown threshold for all battery-electric tugs.
There is no universal low-battery percentage
Readers often look for a figure such as 20%, 10%, or 5%. Official guidance and manufacturer descriptions do not establish one percentage for every electric tug. A hybrid EMS may use a preset minimum selected for that system, while maritime guidance ties reserve capacity to the vessel’s intended operation.
The useful question is not “What percentage makes an electric tug stop?” but “What reserve and response were approved for this tug, its duty cycle, and its charging access?” The same displayed SOC can represent very different practical margins on two vessels because their battery capacities, power demands, weather assumptions, and control-system limits differ.

Why reserve capacity is part of the vessel’s design
The UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency’s MGN 550 Amendment 1, section 2.1, states: “Where lithium-ion batteries are to be used for propulsion, the design and capacity of the electrical energy storage system should be appropriate for the intended operation of the vessel, including capacity for an energy reserve, such as higher power demand in adverse weather or for emergency operations.”

A harbor tug that performs short, predictable assists may have a different energy plan from a tug expected to work long shifts, make repeated high-bollard-pull maneuvers, or operate far from a charger. The vessel’s approved documentation should identify the usable capacity, reserve assumptions, alarm settings, charging plan, and response to abnormal conditions.

What an all-electric tug’s real-world scale looks like
ABB reported in 2024 that Crowley’s eWolf uses a 6.2-megawatt-hour energy-storage system, delivers 70 short tons of bollard pull, and can complete a full day of typical work before charging. Those figures describe that particular tug and its reported operating profile. They are not a universal range or shift length for every electric tug.
“A full day” also depends on what typical work means: time under tow, idle periods, transit, weather, loading, and the amount of high-thrust maneuvering. A tug that spends more time at maximum power will use its energy faster than one performing lower-load harbor movements. The eWolf figures demonstrate the scale of a commercial battery-electric installation, not a guaranteed result for a different vessel.
Battery monitoring does not create extra range
ZEETUG describes its STEMS energy-management platform as tracking battery SOC and battery-motor temperature. This kind of monitoring helps operators understand the vessel’s condition and manage the energy budget. It cannot add energy to the battery or extend the physical range beyond what the battery, load, and operating plan allow.

Temperature is particularly important because charging and discharge limits can change with battery condition. A low-temperature, high-temperature, or equipment-protection limit may affect available power separately from the SOC alarm. The crew should therefore treat the battery display as a set of operating measurements, not as a single fuel-gauge number.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.What operators should plan before a shift
Low-charge management starts before the tug leaves the berth. A practical pre-departure review should use the vessel’s approved manuals and check:
- the starting SOC and the usable-energy limit, rather than assuming the nameplate battery capacity is all available for propulsion;
- the reserve required for the planned work, adverse weather, emergency maneuvering, and a return or diversion;
- the expected power demand for towing, escorting, pushing, standby, and transit segments;
- the location, connector, schedule, and availability status of the next approved charger;
- any battery, motor, cooling, propulsion-control, or alarm condition that restricts operation;
- the actions required at the low-charge warning and at any subsequent critical alarm;
- the communications and assistance arrangements if the charging berth is unavailable or the vessel cannot safely continue.
During the shift, the crew can compare actual SOC consumption with the voyage or job plan. A faster-than-expected decline is a reason to revise the plan early, while maneuvering options and reserve remain available.
Common misconceptions and the accurate version
“Every electric tug switches to diesel.”
Only a hybrid tug with a combustion engine can do that. A fully electric tug has no diesel propulsion source to start.
“The tug always shuts down at a fixed percentage.”
No industry-wide percentage is established. Alarm and protection settings are selected for the vessel’s battery, propulsion system, reserve, and approved operating profile.

“A low-charge alarm means the tug has no usable power left.”
It means a configured warning point has been reached. The remaining energy is reserved for the planned response and may not be available for normal work.
“A large battery guarantees a full shift.”
Capacity alone does not determine endurance. Power demand, weather, towing profile, battery limits, charging access, and reserve requirements all matter.
“Battery protection proves propulsion cannot be lost.”
Protection systems reduce risk by enforcing limits and issuing warnings, but safe operation still depends on reserve, vessel design, crew decisions, maintenance, and contingency arrangements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat to check for a named tug
For a particular vessel, consult its approved operating instructions, battery and propulsion manuals, alarm list, class or flag-state documentation, and charging procedures. Look for the defined SOC warning, reserve requirement, permitted power reductions, engine-start logic if it is hybrid, charger locations, and emergency contacts. Manufacturer descriptions can explain a system’s intended behavior, but the vessel’s own approved procedures govern its operation.
There is no independent industry-wide statistic establishing how often electric tugs experience low-battery events or battery-related stoppages. Claims about reliability or range should therefore be tied to a named vessel, operating profile, and measurement conditions rather than generalized across the sector.
