The decline is gradual and varies by vehicle, climate, charging pattern and driving conditions. A lower number on the dashboard after a cold night, a fast motorway trip or a change in software is not, by itself, proof of permanent battery damage.
The most useful distinction is between battery state of health (the capacity the battery has retained) and the car’s range estimate (a prediction influenced by recent driving). Track the first over time and interpret the second in context.

What battery aging does to range
Usable capacity falls as state of health declines
State of health (SOH) compares a battery’s current usable capacity with the capacity it had when new. Geotab defines it as a measure of how much an EV battery has degraded since it was new. If a 60-kilowatt-hour battery is at 90% SOH, the capacity relationship is approximately 60 × 0.90 = 54 kWh. That is an explanatory capacity example from Geotab, not a promise that every car’s displayed range will fall by exactly 10%.

With less energy available, the car has fewer miles to distribute between charges. If energy consumption stayed identical, a car retaining 90% of its original usable capacity could theoretically travel about 90% of its original distance. Real driving is not that controlled: temperature, speed, terrain, traffic, heating or air conditioning, tyre pressure, payload and battery-management software all affect the miles actually achieved.

Range loss is usually gradual, not a sudden cliff
Lithium-ion cells age through a combination of chemical and mechanical changes. Over time, some of the stored energy becomes unavailable for driving, and the battery-management system may reserve buffers that protect the cells. Drivers generally notice a slow reduction in the distance possible between charges rather than one dramatic failure. A sudden change deserves investigation because it can reflect weather, an estimate recalculation, a software update or a fault rather than normal aging.
How much degradation is typical?
Geotab’s analysis published in January 2026 found 2.3% average annual battery degradation across more than 22,700 electric vehicles covering 21 makes and models. That is a fleet-level average, not a guaranteed allowance for an individual car. Some vehicles will age more slowly and others faster, especially when their operating conditions differ from the vehicles in the sample.
| Finding | What it means | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 2.3% average degradation per year | Geotab’s observed average loss of battery capacity in its fleet analysis | More than 22,700 EVs and 21 makes and models; a population statistic, not a personal forecast |
| Up to 3.0% per year | Higher degradation associated with vehicles relying on DC fast charging above 100 kW | Geotab’s reported association; it does not mean one occasional fast charge causes this rate |
| About 0.4 percentage points faster per year in hot climates | Heat was associated with faster aging than in mild climates | Geotab’s comparison of climate conditions in its analysis |
| More than 80% of time at either very high or very low charge | Spending unusually long periods at either extreme was linked with accelerated degradation | Geotab’s framing concerns time spent at the extremes, not a single full or nearly empty charge |
These figures are useful for setting expectations, but they cannot convert directly into a precise mileage forecast. The original range, battery size, vehicle efficiency, software limits and actual use all matter. A two-year-old car with a particular SOH reading may have a different practical range from another model with the same percentage.

Why an EV battery loses capacity
Calendar aging
Calendar aging occurs while the battery is simply sitting, whether the car is driven frequently or not. Time, temperature and the battery’s average state of charge influence the chemical reactions that gradually reduce available capacity. This is why a low-mileage vehicle can still show age-related loss.
Cycle aging
Cycle aging comes from charging and discharging. A “cycle” is not necessarily one trip from 100% to 0%; partial discharges add up. Frequent high-power use, demanding acceleration and repeated deep cycling can increase stress, although the effect depends on the cell chemistry, cooling system and the vehicle’s controls.
Heat and cold
NREL’s battery-lifespan work models chemical and mechanical degradation caused by the environment and by cycling. High temperatures can accelerate chemical reactions, while very low temperatures temporarily restrict how much power and energy the battery can deliver. A cold-soaked battery may therefore show less usable range until it warms, even though that temporary reduction is not the same as permanent capacity loss.

Charging power and time at the extremes
Geotab’s 2026 fleet analysis found faster aging associated with regular reliance on DC fast charging above 100 kW and with vehicles spending more than 80% of their time at very high or very low state of charge. Fast charging is not automatically harmful, and an occasional rapid charge is not evidence that a battery has been ruined. The relevant question is the vehicle’s long-term pattern and how its thermal-management system handles it.

Why the displayed range can change without permanent degradation
The number beside the battery icon is an estimate based partly on recent energy consumption. It is not a laboratory guarantee of miles remaining. Geotab’s support documentation notes that temperature and battery-management software can alter measured usable capacity in the short term. Driving conditions can move the estimate as well.
| What changes | Typical effect on a range reading | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Cold weather | Reduced temporary efficiency and less available power until the pack warms | Compare with similar temperatures before concluding the battery has aged faster |
| High motorway speeds | Higher aerodynamic energy use and a lower predicted distance | Use a consistent route and speed when comparing records |
| Hills, altitude and headwinds | More energy consumed than on a flat, sheltered route | Separate route conditions from battery capacity |
| Heating or air conditioning | Auxiliary energy use reduces driving distance | Note cabin-temperature demands in any comparison |
| Payload and towing | Extra mass and aerodynamic drag reduce efficiency | Do not compare an unloaded commute with a loaded holiday trip |
| Driving style and traffic | Acceleration, braking and stop-start conditions change consumption | Look for a trend over repeated, comparable journeys |
| Software or battery-management recalibration | The reported usable capacity or predicted range can move up or down | Treat a one-time change as an estimate change until repeated data confirms it |
How to check whether your own EV is losing range
Use a repeatable record rather than relying on a single full-charge number. The following process cannot replace a manufacturer diagnostic, but it helps distinguish a trend from normal variation.

- Find the car’s health information. Check the vehicle’s settings, instrument display or manufacturer app for a battery-health, SOH or usable-capacity value. Not every model exposes one, and the wording differs by manufacturer.
- Record the baseline. Note the odometer, date, reported SOH or usable capacity, battery percentage, outside temperature and the range estimate at a consistent charge level.
- Repeat under similar conditions. Compare similar seasons, routes, speeds and payloads. A summer motorway reading should not be treated as a direct baseline for a winter urban trip.
- Keep a multi-year trend. Geotab recommends tracking battery health over several years. Record readings at regular intervals instead of reacting to every dashboard fluctuation.
- Separate capacity from range. A health estimate concerns energy the battery can hold relative to a baseline. The range estimate also reflects recent consumption, weather, altitude, payload and driving style.
- Investigate an abrupt or inconsistent change. Check for a software update, unusual temperatures, tyre-pressure problems, a charging-system warning or a change in route. If the pattern persists, ask the manufacturer or a qualified EV technician for a diagnostic report.
Geotab’s documented fleet method estimates usable capacity from historical driving and charging data, and its support material warns that battery-management software can influence what is reported. A dashboard SOH value is therefore an estimate with a method behind it, not an independently measured laboratory capacity test.

What aging means for trip planning
Plan from the car’s recent efficiency and the conditions of the journey, not from the original brochure range alone. Leave a practical buffer for weather, traffic, elevation, heating or cooling and charging-station availability. If the vehicle’s usable capacity has declined, charging stops may need to be slightly more frequent, but the size of that change depends on the actual SOH and consumption.
For a used EV, ask for service records and any available battery-health report. Compare the reported health with the vehicle’s original specification and with the seller’s claimed range, while checking how the report was produced. A displayed estimate after a short test drive is not enough to establish long-term degradation.
Can you slow avoidable battery aging?
Driving and charging habits cannot stop aging, but they can reduce some avoidable stress. Follow the vehicle manufacturer’s charge limits and thermal-management guidance. Use rapid charging when it is useful, while avoiding a pattern in which the car is routinely held at very high or very low charge for long periods. In hot climates, shaded or temperature-controlled parking and allowing the car’s cooling system to operate as designed can help manage heat.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →These are risk-management practices, not guarantees. Battery chemistry, cooling hardware, software and climate all affect the result, and Geotab’s fleet associations should not be converted into a rule that every occasional fast charge or full charge causes measurable damage.
Warranty, replacement and what the evidence cannot predict
Battery warranties are specific to the vehicle, model year and jurisdiction. Check the applicable manufacturer warranty for its coverage period, minimum SOH threshold and conditions. A battery warranty should not be interpreted as a promise that the car will retain its original range unchanged throughout the warranty term.
The available fleet and research findings do not establish a precise mileage forecast for a particular car. A defensible estimate would require that vehicle’s original range, current health measurement, make, model, year, battery configuration and operating conditions. If range loss becomes severe, a manufacturer or qualified EV specialist must determine whether the cause is normal capacity fade, a software estimate, a cooling or charging fault, or a damaged module.
