During a grid outage, a battery energy storage system (BESS) either disconnects and serves designated local loads or shuts down, depending on its inverter, transfer equipment, protection settings and operating plan. A normal grid-following, grid-tied battery cannot safely keep energizing a circuit after utility power disappears. An island-capable system opens its utility connection, forms a controlled local electrical island and supplies only the loads its power and stored-energy limits can support.

The U.S. Department of Energy describes one residential solar-plus-storage scenario this way: Within seconds, residential photovoltaic (PV) solar panel systems with battery storage automatically detect the loss of grid power and switch to an “islanded” mode to keep the power on. That is an illustrative configuration, not a guarantee for every home, commercial facility or utility battery. The relevant question is whether the project was engineered, tested and approved for intentional islanding.

The sequence from grid failure to local backup

An outage is not simply a switch from utility electricity to battery electricity. Protection, controls, inverters and load-management equipment must coordinate in a defined order.

  1. Grid loss is detected. Protection and control equipment monitors voltage, frequency and other grid conditions. It identifies a complete outage or an unacceptable supply condition according to the equipment’s settings.
  2. The utility connection is isolated. A system designed for islanding opens its service disconnect, static switch, breaker or other approved point of separation. This prevents the BESS from energizing utility conductors that line workers believe are de-energized. The DOE explains the microgrid safety issue in its microgrid guidance.
  3. The local electrical island is established. An island-capable inverter establishes or follows the voltage and frequency reference needed by the site’s equipment. A conventional grid-tied photovoltaic inverter normally stops producing when it loses the grid; an engineered microgrid can continue on the isolated side of the connection.
  4. Priority loads are supplied. The controller applies the site’s load-shedding plan. Critical circuits may remain energized while noncritical heating, cooling, pumps, chargers or process equipment are disconnected to keep demand within the BESS’s rated power.
  5. Energy is managed throughout the outage. The controller watches battery state of charge, power demand, temperature and operating limits. Solar or another local generator may recharge the battery if the island controls allow it and the generation is available.
  6. Reconnection is controlled when utility service returns. The system waits for acceptable grid conditions and follows its interconnection and synchronization logic before closing the utility connection or resuming normal grid-connected operation. The timing and sequence vary by equipment, utility and jurisdiction.

Never bypass anti-islanding protection or manually energize utility-connected wiring. The UK Government’s grid-scale storage safety guidance identifies electrical-interface protection and prevention of network backfeeding as essential controls.

Why a BESS is not automatically backup power

A battery stores energy, but backup service requires an electrical architecture that can use that energy when the grid reference disappears. A project can contain substantial battery capacity and still shut down during an outage if its inverter is grid-following only, its transfer equipment is absent, or its controls are not approved to operate an island.

Grid-following operation

A grid-following inverter synchronizes to an external voltage and frequency reference. In an ordinary grid-tied installation, loss of that reference causes the inverter to stop. This anti-islanding behavior is intentional: an uncontrolled generator could leave a supposedly isolated feeder energized and expose utility workers or damage equipment.

Intentional islanding

An islandable BESS has a defined point of separation, protection settings and controls that coordinate generation, storage and loads on the customer side. The system may use a microgrid controller and a transfer or static-switch assembly to open the utility connection, establish local voltage and frequency, and shed loads when necessary. The DOE’s microgrid systems overview describes microgrids as local systems that can operate connected to the utility or as an island.

Grid-forming capability

A grid-forming inverter can create an AC voltage and frequency reference for an island. That capability is different from simply having a large battery and must be matched to the site’s protection, controls, short-circuit behavior and connected equipment. The design must also specify which loads can start, which motors require sequencing, and how multiple inverters share power.

What determines how long the power lasts?

There is no universal BESS runtime. The usable energy available at the moment of the outage is only one part of the calculation. The National Laboratory of the Rockies’ System Advisor Model outage documentation requires a model to identify critical loads, outage timing and a minimum battery state of charge; those inputs demonstrate why a single hours-of-backup number would be misleading.

Factor Effect during an outage
Usable stored energy The battery’s usable kilowatt-hours, after reserve and operating limits, set the energy budget.
Rated power The inverter and battery power rating limits the largest simultaneous load and short-duration starting surges.
Initial state of charge A battery at a configured reserve level has less energy available than one at a higher state of charge.
Load profile Continuous demand, motor starts, electric heating and changing schedules determine the rate of energy use.
Load priority and shedding Automatic disconnection of lower-priority circuits can preserve power for critical circuits.
Local generation Solar or another approved generator can reduce net battery discharge or recharge the battery during daylight or generation periods.
Control and environmental limits Temperature, inverter limits, reserve settings and communications availability can restrict operation.

For a planning estimate, the engineering team should model the actual one-line diagram, critical-load schedule, seasonal demand and minimum reserve rather than divide a nameplate megawatt-hour figure by an assumed load. A project may also reserve energy for restart, black-start or emergency operating conditions.

Which loads receive power?

Most backup designs do not keep an entire site operating. The electrical distribution is divided into critical and noncritical sections, with the controller preserving circuits according to a documented priority scheme.

Residential sites

A home system may back up a designated panel containing refrigeration, lighting, communications, medical equipment or selected outlets. Whole-home backup requires enough inverter power for the home’s largest starting loads and enough energy for the expected outage. Electric resistance heating, air-conditioning compressors, water heaters and vehicle charging can consume a battery quickly or exceed its instantaneous power rating.

Commercial facilities and campuses

A behind-the-meter BESS can support a facility, campus or other customer site, but the owner must identify which loads are safety-critical, operationally critical or deferrable. Fire pumps, elevators, data rooms, refrigeration, process controls and ventilation may have different tolerances for interruption. Automatic load shedding can keep the highest-priority circuits within the island’s power limit.

Microgrids

A microgrid coordinates local loads and resources, such as batteries, solar, generators and controllable demand. It can remain grid-connected during normal operation and separate during an outage. Its resilience depends on the local distribution topology, black-start sequence, communications and protection—not merely on battery size.

Residential, behind-the-meter and utility-scale systems compared

Configuration Normal role Possible outage behavior What is not implied
Residential solar-plus-storage Serve household loads, shift solar energy or reduce grid purchases With approved islanding hardware, isolate the home and supply selected or whole-home circuits Every home battery provides whole-home backup or can run without a transfer and isolation system
Behind-the-meter commercial BESS Manage demand, energy costs or facility resilience Island a facility or campus and shed loads according to a critical-load plan The battery can carry every building load or all motor-starting events
Microgrid BESS Coordinate multiple local resources and loads Operate connected to the utility or as an island, potentially with several generation sources Any battery connected to a feeder is automatically a microgrid
Utility-scale BESS Provide grid services such as capacity, balancing or energy shifting Support a planned critical facility, feeder or restoration sequence if designed and contracted for that role A utility battery will automatically power nearby homes during an outage

Whether a utility-scale project serves a nearby load depends on ownership, contracts, electrical topology, protection settings and control authority. A battery on the same broad area of the network may be unable to energize a particular neighborhood.

Black start and grid restoration

Black start means energizing generation or a portion of the grid without relying on an already energized external grid. The National Laboratory of the Rockies notes that grid-forming inverters can provide a reference AC waveform for this work. A black-start-capable BESS may help start other generators, energize substations or rebuild a system in stages.

Black start is not synonymous with household backup. It is a planned grid service requiring compatible switchgear, protection, communications, operating procedures and participating assets. A battery that can island one building may not have the voltage, fault-current behavior or control authority needed to restart a transmission or distribution segment.

A documented project example

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory describes a U.S. Navy Pacific Missile Range Facility project in Kauai, Hawaii, with 19.3 megawatts of solar photovoltaic capacity and 70 megawatt-hours of battery storage. The NREL resilience report says the site can use the system to serve critical loads when the grid goes down. Those are project-specific capacities, not a typical residential size and not a promise that every 70-MWh battery can support the same loads for the same duration.

The DOE’s resilient-distribution-systems work illustrates why resilience is a system-design question involving distributed generation, storage and critical loads rather than a battery-only specification.

Safety during a battery outage event

Do not open enclosures, reset protective devices repeatedly, defeat anti-islanding functions or connect portable wiring to a building panel unless the equipment documentation and a qualified electrician explicitly provide that procedure. Utility reconnection and island operation involve lethal voltages even when the public grid is reported to be out.

Battery incidents require additional precautions. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency warns that lithium-battery fires can be difficult to extinguish, may reignite and can release harmful gases. A battery showing smoke, swelling, hissing, unusual heat, impact damage or a persistent fault should be treated as an emergency. Keep people away, call emergency services and follow the site emergency plan; do not move or dispose of a damaged battery through ordinary waste channels. Specialized responders and disposal contractors may be required.

Common outage outcomes and what they mean

Observed outcome Likely design explanation Appropriate next step
The battery and solar inverter shut off immediately The equipment may be grid-following only, or the islanding function may not be installed or enabled. Check the approved operating mode and documentation; have the installer or qualified service provider verify the configuration.
Only a few circuits remain powered The system is using a critical-load panel or automatic load shedding. Review the backed-up circuit list and load-priority settings rather than assuming the whole building is supported.
Power drops when a motor starts The starting surge exceeds inverter capability or the controller sheds the load to protect the island. Measure starting and running demand and revise the load plan or equipment capacity through an engineer.
The battery reaches reserve quickly Demand is higher than modeled, the initial state of charge was low, or reserve settings protect future operation. Compare the event data with the approved load and state-of-charge model; do not lower reserves without professional review.
The system does not reconnect after utility power returns Grid voltage, frequency, synchronization, communications or a protection lockout may not yet be acceptable. Wait for the normal automatic sequence and contact the responsible operator; never force a breaker closed.

What to do before, during and after an outage

Before an outage

  • Keep the battery within the operator’s recommended state-of-charge range and confirm that backup circuits are labeled.
  • Test the approved islanding procedure at commissioning and at the maintenance interval specified by the manufacturer, utility or authority having jurisdiction.
  • Give responders the site plan, battery chemistry, disconnect locations and emergency contacts.
  • Confirm how refrigeration, medical equipment, water systems, communications and other critical loads will be prioritized during a long event.

During an outage

  • Allow the automatic protection and transfer sequence to operate; avoid switching utility-connected equipment manually.
  • Reduce discretionary demand if the operator’s procedure permits it, especially high-power heating, cooling and vehicle charging.
  • Watch alarms, temperature and state-of-charge indicators from the approved monitoring interface.
  • If there is smoke, fire, gas, swelling, impact damage or repeated violent faulting, evacuate and contact emergency services.

After restoration

Let the system complete its synchronization and reconnection sequence. Review alarms and event logs with the qualified operator, inspect equipment for damage and replenish the battery only after the system is cleared for normal operation.

Bottom line

A BESS during a grid outage is either a controlled islanding resource or a shut-down grid-tied device. The deciding factors are intentional-islanding capability, safe utility separation, inverter and controller design, critical-load selection, available power and energy, and the project’s approved operating procedures. Runtime and coverage must be calculated from the actual site; no universal number of backup hours applies.
