Before the lights go out, Race Direction can pause the grid countdown and reschedule the start. Once a race has started, a red flag triggers a separate procedure: officials calculate the result from the last valid lap, then decide whether to restart, declare the race complete, or cancel it under the FIM regulations. Championship points depend mainly on how many laps the leader completed. Ticket refunds are a separate contract issue handled by the seller and event promoter, so a sporting cancellation does not automatically guarantee cash back.
The four outcomes to know

The three-quarter threshold applies to MotoGP. The cited regulations use a two-thirds threshold for Moto2 and Moto3, so those classes must not be used as a shortcut for interpreting a MotoGP result.

What a delayed start means
A delayed start happens before the race has begun. It can be caused by weather, a problem on the grid, a safety issue, or another circumstance that makes the scheduled start unsafe or impractical. The event has not been canceled merely because the start time moved.

The revised 2026 countdown
Under the change announced by MotoGP.com on 25 April 2026 and adopted in the Grand Prix Commission decision published on 30 April, once “Start Delayed” is declared, the countdown to the Warm Up lap resumes at the five-minute board. Teams must stop working on the bikes at the three-minute board. This gives crews an additional warning period compared with the previous procedure, which resumed at the three-minute board.

- The countdown resumes at the five-minute board: Teams complete the permitted preparation before the next cutoff.
- The three-minute board appears: Bike work must stop under the revised procedure.
- The Warm Up lap and start sequence continue: If conditions remain suitable, the race proceeds at the revised time.
The exact restart time can change with local weather, track conditions and safety decisions. Follow the official circuit and MotoGP timing notices rather than relying on the original programme.
What a red flag means after the race starts
A red flag is an interruption, not automatically a cancellation. Red lights and flags tell riders to slow immediately and return to pit lane. Race Direction then determines the classification point and whether the race can be restarted.
How officials establish the running order
The result is not always simply the order riders occupied at the instant the flag appeared. The regulations use the last point at which the leader completed a full lap without the red flag. Officials then account for riders who had crossed the line on the same lap as the leader and riders who had not. A rider who was not actively competing when the red flag was displayed is not classified under the cited regulation text.

A rider who had already crossed the timing line may be treated differently from one still completing the same lap, and a rider who had retired or was otherwise not competing may be excluded from the classification.
How many laps are needed for a MotoGP result?
The rules use two separate tests: a minimum of three laps for the interrupted attempt to be eligible for a restart procedure, and three-quarters of the race distance for an automatic completed race with full points. Fractions are rounded down to a whole number of laps.

Calculating the three-quarter threshold
Take the scheduled MotoGP race distance in laps, multiply by 0.75, and round down. For a 20-lap race, the threshold is 15 laps. For a 27-lap race, 0.75 of the distance is 20.25, so the threshold is 20 laps. Once the leader has completed that many laps, a red-flagged race is complete for championship purposes and full points are awarded.
The three-lap null-and-void rule
If the leader has completed fewer than three laps when the race is interrupted, the first attempt does not become a shortened result. It is null and void, and the procedure is to run an entirely new race. If officials cannot restart it, the race is declared canceled and contributes nothing to the championship standings.

Three laps reached, but not three-quarters
When at least three laps are complete but the leader has not reached the three-quarter threshold, Race Direction can arrange a restart. If the restart is impossible, the distance completed in the interrupted race determines whether half or full points apply. Less than half of the original race distance earns half points; half or more earns full points under the cited interruption provision.
For example, in a 20-lap race, 9 completed laps are below half and 10 are exactly half. If a restart cannot be held, those figures fall on opposite sides of the points threshold. The three-quarter completion test remains separate: 15 laps are needed for an automatic completed race.
When three-quarters are complete
At or above the rounded-down three-quarter distance, officials deem the race complete and award full championship points. A further restart is not required to create a valid result.

How restarts are scheduled
Race Direction decides whether, when and how many times to restart, taking account of the circuit, weather and the circumstances that caused the interruption. A restart can be placed later in the programme if the schedule and safety conditions allow it.

That prevents an earlier short segment from being treated as though it were the full distance of the new race.
Local event communications can therefore change quickly. A red flag may be followed by a pit-lane wait, a revised grid procedure, a shorter restart, or a decision that conditions make further running impossible. The official Race Direction message is controlling for that event.
What cancellation means for the championship
A canceled MotoGP race is one that produces no championship result under the interruption rules. The clearest case is an interruption before the leader completes three laps followed by an impossible restart. Riders do not receive points for that canceled event, and the championship calendar proceeds without a score from that race.
That is different from a race that is stopped after enough distance has been completed. A race can finish under red flags with full points, or it can produce half points when the intermediate-distance rule applies and no restart is possible. “Red flagged” and “canceled” are therefore not interchangeable descriptions.

Will a ticket be refunded?
Sporting classification and ticket compensation are separate. The FIM rules decide whether the race counts; the ticket seller’s contract and the promoter’s announcement decide what a spectator can claim.
Tickets bought through the official MotoGP store
The MotoGP Official Ticket Store FAQ, accessed 13 October 2026, states: “Unfortunately, after confirmation and payment for tickets, cancellations are not accepted.” That describes cancellation by the buyer, not a universal waiver of remedies when the promoter changes the event.
The same FAQ says that when a promoter offers compensation for an event that is canceled, postponed or held behind closed doors, one form of compensation for tickets purchased through tickets.motogp.com is an account-balance refund. The balance is valid for 24 months and can be used only for events in the same currency. The FAQ does not establish a universal cash-refund policy.
Tickets from another seller
If you bought from a circuit, reseller, travel-package provider or another ticketing service, that seller’s terms apply. Check:
- Whether the event notice defines a cancellation, postponement or behind-closed-doors event.
- Whether compensation is cash, credit, exchange tickets or another remedy.
- The deadline for submitting a claim.
- Whether service fees, shipping, hotel bookings and travel costs are treated separately.
- Which currency, event date and ticket order the remedy covers.
Do not assume that a delayed start creates a refund right. A race that begins later the same day is generally a rescheduled sporting session, while a promoter’s cancellation policy may apply only when the event itself is canceled or materially changed. Read the named seller’s event terms and the official event notice before abandoning the ticket.

What spectators should do during a delay or red flag
- Check the official timing and circuit announcements. The first message may say only “Start Delayed” or “Race Red Flagged”; wait for the next instruction before treating it as a cancellation.
- Keep the ticket and order details. Save the confirmation email, ticket barcode, purchaser name and seller information in case compensation is announced.
- Do not leave on an unofficial estimate. Race Direction may reschedule a restart later in the programme, particularly when weather is changing.
- Separate travel decisions from ticket rights. A hotel or transport provider has its own cancellation terms, which may not match the promoter’s policy.
- Use the seller named on the receipt. The official MotoGP store cannot decide the remedy for a ticket purchased from a circuit or reseller.
- Watch the claim deadline. If compensation is offered, follow the published process and keep a record of the submission.
Common misunderstandings
“A red flag means the result is whatever order was showing.”
Not necessarily. Classification is calculated from the last valid completed-lap point, with additional rules for riders who had or had not crossed the line on the leader’s lap and for riders actively competing when the flag appeared.
“Three laps means full points.”
No. Three laps is the minimum cited for the interrupted race to enter the restart or distance-based procedure. Full points without a successful restart require the leader to reach three-quarters of the race distance, rounded down.
“Half the race always means half points.”
Only in the specific intermediate case where at least three laps were completed, the three-quarter threshold was not reached, and a restart is impossible. At half the original distance or more, the cited rule provides full points instead.

No universal cash-refund rule is established. The remedy depends on the seller, promoter and event terms. The official store describes account-balance compensation when the promoter offers compensation, with a 24-month validity period and same-currency restriction.
Bottom line for race day
A pre-race delay changes the countdown; it does not by itself cancel the Grand Prix. After the start, a red flag sends riders to pit lane and starts a rules-based calculation. Fewer than three leader laps makes the attempt null and void; three laps or more can lead to a restart or distance-based points; reaching three-quarters of the MotoGP distance produces a completed race with full points. Ticket compensation must be checked with the seller and promoter separately from the sporting result.
