Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf a recall is announced before the repair is ready, your car may remain unrepaired while the manufacturer designs the fix, trains dealers and ships parts. The manufacturer should send an interim notice explaining the safety risk and any temporary precautions, then a second notice when the remedy is available. Do not assume the car is safe to drive: follow the exact instructions for your recall, including any “do not drive” or “park outside” warning. Once available, the recall repair at an authorized manufacturer dealership is free.
This article describes the United States process under National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) guidance. Requirements and consumer remedies can differ in other countries.

Why a recalled car may not be repairable yet
A recall decision identifies a safety defect; it does not always mean a finished repair exists. NHTSA explains that a manufacturer may need time to complete several linked tasks before dealers can work on every affected vehicle.
Developing and validating the remedy
Engineers must determine what part, software update or procedure will correct the defect. The manufacturer may need to test that remedy, write installation instructions and identify any related components that must be replaced at the same visit.

Preparing dealers
Dealership technicians need technical instructions, tools and training. A dealer generally is not required to perform a recall remedy that the manufacturer has not released through its service system.
Making parts available
Even after the procedure is complete, parts may have to be manufactured, inspected and distributed to dealers in the affected regions. Supply can be staged rather than delivered to every dealership at once.
Identifying and notifying owners
The manufacturer and NHTSA match vehicle identification numbers to registration and ownership information, then send notices. NHTSA manufacturer guidance says owners must be notified of the safety risk within 60 days of the filing. If the remedy is not available at that point, the manufacturer sends an interim notice and follows it with another notice when the remedy becomes available.

The campaign notice remains the controlling source for what you should do with your particular vehicle.
What the interim recall notice tells you
An interim notice is not a clearance to keep using the car normally. It should identify the vehicle and campaign, describe the hazard and explain short-term steps intended to reduce the chance or consequences of a failure while the remedy is being prepared.
Instructions can be specific to the defect
NHTSA gives examples such as checking for warning signs, limiting use or discontinuing use altogether. A notice might tell you to inspect a component before each trip, avoid carrying passengers, keep the vehicle away from structures or stop driving immediately. Read every page, including inserts and updated letters.

Use the notice for the exact vehicle and campaign
Two vehicles from the same manufacturer can have different defects, risk levels and temporary instructions. Do not apply advice from a news story, a social-media post or another model’s recall to your car. If the letter is missing or unclear, contact the manufacturer’s recall number or a dealership and ask for the written instruction that applies to your vehicle identification number (VIN).
Should you stop driving while you wait?
There is no single answer for every recall. The defect, failure mode and campaign notice determine whether driving is acceptable, restricted or prohibited.
When the notice says “do not drive”
Do not drive the vehicle, even for a short trip to the dealer, unless the manufacturer gives you a safe transport plan. Ask how the vehicle will be collected or repaired. A “do not drive” instruction is a safety direction, not a suggestion that can be weighed against inconvenience.
When the notice says “park outside”
Park in an open area away from buildings and other vehicles for the period stated in the notice. This instruction is commonly used when a fire or other event could harm people or property near the vehicle. Follow any additional directions about charging, fuel level or inspection.
When the notice allows limited use
Some campaigns provide a check, operating limit or warning-sign procedure rather than an immediate driving ban. Follow those limits exactly and stop using the vehicle if the listed symptom appears. If the letter does not state whether driving is permitted, ask the manufacturer before using the car.

On February 11, 2026, NHTSA warned owners of named Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram vehicles with unrepaired Takata air-bag recalls not to drive until repaired. That warning applies to the specified vehicles and recall condition; it should not be extended to unrelated air-bag campaigns or other recalls.

What happens after the remedy is ready
When parts and instructions are available, the manufacturer sends a follow-up notice. It should explain how to arrange the repair and may identify a revised parts-availability date or a phased rollout. You can also contact a manufacturer dealership rather than waiting for the second letter.
The repair is free
NHTSA directs owners to a manufacturer dealership for the recall remedy at no charge. The dealer should not bill you for the parts or labor that are part of the safety recall. Bring the recall letter if you have it, although the dealer can usually locate the campaign from the VIN.
Availability can still vary by location
A remedy may be released nationally while an individual dealership is waiting for its shipment. Call before travelling and ask whether the exact parts are physically available, whether the technicians are authorized for the campaign and how long the appointment is expected to take.

Your rights while the repair is delayed
A no-charge remedy within a reasonable time
NHTSA’s owner guidance describes an owner’s right to a recall remedy at no charge and within a reasonable time. The same guidance recognizes that there can be a lag between the recall decision and the remedy becoming available. During that preparation period, the guide says there is no legal recourse under the recall process to force immediate correction.
That statement is a description of the federal recall process, not a ruling on every possible claim. The guide notes that recall remedies are in addition to other legal remedies and recommends consulting a lawyer or state or local authorities about questions under state law.
No automatic payment for every delay-related expense
The general NHTSA material does not establish a universal right to a rental car, loaner, tow, replacement vehicle or reimbursement for inconvenience while you wait. A particular campaign may offer assistance or reimburse specified costs, but those terms must be verified for that campaign. Ask the manufacturer what it will cover before paying for transportation yourself.

What to do while you are waiting
- Read and identify the campaign. Confirm the VIN, defect, recall number and any deadline or operating restriction in the notice. Keep the letter and envelope with your vehicle records.
- Follow every interim instruction. Apply “do not drive,” “park outside,” inspection and usage limits exactly as written. If the instruction conflicts with an immediate need, contact the manufacturer for a safe alternative instead of improvising.
- Call a manufacturer dealership. Ask whether the remedy has been released for your VIN, whether parts are in stock, whether the work requires an appointment and what transportation procedure applies if driving is prohibited.
- Confirm how you will be notified. Update your mailing address and telephone or email details with the manufacturer and, where appropriate, your state vehicle-registration authority. Ask whether the dealer can place you on a parts-arrival call list.
- Document conversations. Record the date, dealership, representative’s name, promised follow-up and any instructions. Save texts, emails, invoices and photographs of warning signs.
- Arrange transport safely. If the notice prohibits driving, ask whether the manufacturer will tow the car or send a mobile technician. Do not assume a tow or rental will be reimbursed without written confirmation.
- Return when parts arrive. Schedule the repair promptly, verify that the campaign is closed on the work order and keep the repair invoice showing a zero balance.
If a dealer refuses a repair that is available
A dealer can legitimately tell you to wait when the manufacturer has not released the remedy or the necessary part. That is different from refusing a repair that the recall notice says is available and that the dealer is equipped to perform.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Ask the service manager to check the campaign status and parts inventory against your VIN.
- Request the reason for the refusal and the earliest appointment at that dealership or another authorized dealership.
- Contact the manufacturer immediately using the customer-care number in the recall notice. Give the dealer’s name, visit date, campaign number and what you were told.
- If the issue is not resolved, file a complaint with NHTSA and retain the complaint number and supporting documents.
NHTSA’s consumer guidance specifically directs owners to notify the manufacturer when a dealer denies a no-charge recall remedy and describes filing a complaint with the agency. A complaint cannot manufacture a missing part, but it creates a record of a refusal after the remedy is supposed to be available.
Transportation, towing and reimbursement questions
Mobility help is campaign-specific. Before accepting or paying for a service, ask the manufacturer these concrete questions:
- Will the vehicle be towed if the notice says not to drive?
- Is a rental car, loaner or ride service available, and for how many days?
- Must assistance be arranged through a particular roadside provider?
- What receipts, approvals or mileage limits apply to reimbursement?
- Does assistance cover every owner, or only vehicles under a specific “do not drive” instruction?
- What happens if the repair appointment is cancelled because parts do not arrive?
Get the answer in writing. The absence of a general federal entitlement means you should not rely on a dealer’s informal promise or assume that an expense will be repaid later.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare two recall situations
If you are deciding how urgently to act, compare the campaigns on the factors below rather than on the age or mileage of the vehicle.
| Question | Campaign A | Campaign B |
|---|---|---|
| Defect and potential hazard | Use the exact defect and consequence stated in the notice. | Use the exact defect and consequence stated in the notice. |
| Interim instruction | Record whether it says do not drive, park outside, inspect, limit use or continue with caution. | Record the instruction in that campaign’s notice; it may be different. |
| Remedy status | Not available, partially released or available; confirm with a dealer. | Not available, partially released or available; confirm with a dealer. |
| Next update | Note the manufacturer’s stated parts or notification plan. | Note the manufacturer’s stated parts or notification plan. |
| Mobility support | Verify towing, rental, loaner or reimbursement terms directly. | Verify towing, rental, loaner or reimbursement terms directly. |
The table is a decision checklist, not a promise that either campaign will offer transportation or that one defect is safer. The notice and manufacturer’s current instructions control.

How long can the wait last?
NHTSA’s public guidance explains why a wait occurs but does not provide one representative number of days between an interim notice and a completed repair. Timing depends on engineering work, regulatory coordination, parts production, shipping and dealer capacity. Treat any date in your letter as campaign-specific rather than a general expectation for all recalls.
Ask the dealer when it last checked the campaign bulletin and whether the parts order is open, back-ordered or not yet released. If the manufacturer gives a revised date, write it down and set a reminder to call if no update arrives.
What the national recall numbers do—and do not—tell you
NHTSA reported 1,073 vehicle and equipment safety recalls in 2024 and more than 29.3 million vehicles recalled that year in an October 30, 2025 consumer alert. Those figures show the scale of the system; they do not predict how quickly any particular model will receive its remedy or establish a standard waiting period.
Why interim warnings have long been part of the process
In a October 3, 1977 interpretation, NHTSA Administrator Joan Claybrook described the practical reason a warning can precede a repair: “The agency understands that any recall and remedy process is somewhat time-consuming for a manufacturer, and accordingly, vehicles will not be repaired immediately.” That historical sentence explains the sequencing, but it is not a current repair deadline. Current campaign notices and NHTSA consumer guidance should determine what you do today.
Bottom line for an unrepaired recalled car
A delay usually means the manufacturer is still preparing the remedy, not that the recall has been cancelled. Read the interim notice, obey any do-not-drive or park-outside direction, and contact a manufacturer dealership to confirm parts and scheduling. The recall repair is free once available. If a dealer refuses an available remedy, escalate to the manufacturer and then NHTSA. For towing, rentals, loaners or reimbursement, ask the manufacturer directly and obtain the terms in writing; they are not universal benefits of every recall.
