1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAMCI Testing reported more than 75 safety-related driver interventions during a 1,000-plus-mile drive in a 2024 Tesla Model 3 Performance using Full Self-Driving (Supervised) software versions 12.5.1 and 12.5.3. That works out to roughly one intervention every 13 miles. AMCI said the system could be impressive in individual situations but was not consistently reliable.
What AMCI’s 1,000-mile test found
AMCI Testing conducted the evaluation in 2024 across city streets, rural two-lane roads, mountain routes and freeways. Its drivers reported taking control more than 75 times over more than 1,000 miles (1,610 km), an average of one intervention every 13 miles.

Those are AMCI’s reported figures and judgment for this vehicle, route mix, software, drivers and test protocol. They are not an independently validated universal failure rate for Tesla FSD and are not a like-for-like comparison with another automated-driving system.
AMCI Global CEO David Stokols summarized the company’s assessment: “Although it positively impresses in some circumstances, you simply cannot reliably rely on the accuracy or reasoning behind its responses.”

What counted as an intervention
In an October 2 follow-up, AMCI said its protocol counted an intervention when the driver took control and forced FSD to disengage because its behavior put occupants, the public or other motorists at risk.
That definition matters. The reported number is not simply every steering-wheel touch, system disengagement or moment of driver supervision. It reflects AMCI’s decision that a risk-related takeover was necessary. The releases do not establish that this is a standardized metric shared by other autonomous-driving evaluations.
Examples shown in the released videos
Running a red light at night
A video example described by Futurism showed the Tesla proceeding through a visible red light at night before the driver intervened.
Crossing a double-yellow line
Another clip showed FSD failing to recognize or follow a double-yellow line around a curve and moving toward oncoming traffic. The driver took control.
A maneuver that worked
The released material also showed FSD handling at least some situations well, including moving aside on a narrow road to let oncoming traffic pass. These clips are selected examples, not an event-by-event audit of the entire drive.
AMCI Testing director Guy Mangiamele described the concern this way: “What’s most disconcerting and unpredictable is that you may watch FSD successfully negotiate a specific scenario many times — often on the same stretch of road or intersection — only to have it inexplicably fail the next time.”

Do not combine it with AMCI’s later New York City result
AMCI released a separate New York City assessment on October 10, 2024. That test covered 300 miles in a Hardware 4-equipped 2024 Model 3 running FSD version 12.5.4, and AMCI reported an average intervention rate greater than once every 11 miles.
Because the car hardware, software version, geography and distance differed, the New York result should not be merged with the earlier 1,000-mile figure. It is a separate AMCI test.
How much can this result tell you about FSD?
The intervention rate describes what happened under AMCI’s conditions; it does not establish how FSD performs on every Tesla, road or software release. Route selection, weather and traffic, driver behavior, the vehicle’s hardware, the software build and the threshold for taking control can all change the result.
A fair comparison with another driving system would need matching:
- software version and vehicle hardware;
- geography and road types;
- distance and route selection;
- driver training and supervision rules; and
- the precise intervention definition and reporting method.
The released AMCI materials do not provide a complete event-level dataset or a directly matched competing-system evaluation. The 2024 drive is therefore best read as a documented independent test of one Tesla under specified conditions, not as a universal FSD statistic or a prediction for today’s software.
