Short answer: Tesla is still preparing to expand its supervised driving software in China, but the latest reporting does not establish a nationwide rollout date, a China subscription, or feature parity with other markets. A May 2026 announcement described FSD Supervised as available in China, while an Aug. 26 report said China was not accepting FSD subscriptions and Tesla’s Chinese site still placed the complete feature set in the future.
What Tesla has actually announced
Tesla’s China plans have produced several different signals that should not be treated as one confirmed launch.

- On April 23, 2026, Tesla was reported as saying it was working to launch FSD in China “as soon as possible.” No date was supplied.
- On May 21, 2026, South China Morning Post reported that Tesla had announced FSD Supervised availability in China and nine other countries. The report did not specify the exact functions, vehicle configurations or regulatory conditions covered by that announcement.
- On Aug. 26, 2026, CnEVPost reported that Tesla China denied rumors that it had abandoned its Shanghai data center. Tesla said the center was operating normally, recruitment for driver-assistance positions was accelerating and related work was progressing steadily.
Those developments show continuing preparation and at least a limited availability claim. They do not prove that every Tesla owner in China can buy, activate or use the complete FSD Supervised package.

The most defensible answer, based on the latest dated report, is: not as a broadly available consumer subscription with a confirmed nationwide feature set.

The August account said Tesla was not offering FSD subscriptions in China and had not announced a broad-rollout timetable. It also reported that Tesla’s Chinese website had renamed the software “Tesla Assisted Driving” and described the full suite as coming “later.” That conflicts only superficially with the May availability announcement: a limited release, approval for a particular use case, or an announcement ahead of practical consumer access can coexist with the absence of a general subscription.
Tesla’s country-availability language also needs care. A market listed as available for use is not necessarily a market where customers can subscribe, receive every feature or use the same functions as drivers elsewhere.
When will Tesla FSD launch across China?
There is no firm public date established by the reviewed reporting. Tesla’s April wording—working to launch “as soon as possible”—was a statement of intent, not a schedule. An earlier expectation attributed to Elon Musk that approval would arrive in February 2026 did not materialize; the April report cited China Daily’s denial of that plan.

The Shanghai data center’s continued operation is evidence that Tesla has not stopped its China effort. It is not evidence that a nationwide retail rollout is imminent. Tesla has not publicly established, in the sources reviewed, the launch date, rollout phases, cities, eligible vehicles or final customer terms.
Has China approved Tesla’s full FSD system?
Reports refer to a regulatory nod before Tesla’s May announcement, but they do not define the precise approved scope. No directly reviewed regulator notice establishes that China authorized every FSD Supervised function for all Tesla models and roads.
Until Tesla or a Chinese regulator publishes those details, “approved” should not be read as “fully autonomous” or “unrestricted nationwide access.” FSD Supervised remains a driver-assistance product: the driver must supervise the vehicle and remain responsible for the driving task. The available reporting does not support calling it a driverless system.

Why the China rollout matters to Tesla
China is a crucial test of Tesla’s ability to compete on software as domestic automakers expand their own driver-assistance systems. CnEVPost highlighted Xiaomi and Huawei as Chinese brands broadening such features across more vehicles.

South China Morning Post reported an estimate from Gary Ng Cheuk-yan of Natixis Corporate and Investment Bank that Tesla held 6% of China’s market in 2025, compared with a 16% peak in 2020. That is an analyst figure reported by the newspaper, not an official Tesla statistic. A delayed FSD rollout could weaken Tesla’s technology pitch relative to local rivals, although the sources do not establish that rollout timing caused the change in market share.
How to read the next Tesla announcement
A credible confirmation of broad access should answer several separate questions rather than simply repeat the word “available.” Look for:
- The named Chinese regulator and the specific authorization scope.
- The exact FSD Supervised functions enabled for retail drivers.
- Which Tesla models, production years and hardware versions qualify.
- Whether activation is limited to selected cities, roads, testers or invitees.
- A published one-time price, recurring subscription price or other purchase terms.
- The driver-supervision obligations and any local operating restrictions.
Until those details are published, the safest description is that Tesla is advancing toward a China rollout while practical access to the complete supervised-driving suite remains unsettled.
