A rented Tesla Cybertruck returned to the valet area at Trump International Hotel Las Vegas at about 8:39 a.m. on January 1, 2025. Seventeen seconds later, it exploded. Police later described the blast as an intentional attack involving a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device—not a vehicle battery malfunction.
What happened, and when did the Cybertruck explode?
The truck first arrived at the hotel at about 7:35 a.m., then left and spent nearly 45 minutes in a nearby business parking lot. It returned to the valet area at approximately 8:39 a.m.; the explosion followed 17 seconds later. Dispatch received a report at about 8:40 a.m., according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD). LVMPD’s January 2 update gives that sequence.

An earlier police release placed the truck’s arrival at about 8:38 a.m. and said one person died in the vehicle and seven others sustained minor injuries. It reported that fireworks mortars and gasoline canisters were found in the truck bed. LVMPD’s January 1 account was an initial incident update; the more detailed timing came the following day.
Who was driving, and how many people were injured?
LVMPD identified the driver as 37-year-old Matthew Livelsberger of Colorado Springs. The department said the Clark County Coroner determined that he died from an intraoral gunshot wound by suicide. Police separately described the explosion as intentional in an update on January 8, distinguishing the reported cause of Livelsberger’s death from the detonation itself. The January 2 update reported the coroner’s determination; the January 8 update addressed investigators’ conclusions about the explosion.

Seven other people sustained minor injuries, according to LVMPD. The reported count and injury severity come from police statements, not an independent tally.
What did investigators conclude about the explosion?
On January 1, authorities said fireworks mortars and gasoline canisters had been found in the truck. The vehicle was rented in Colorado, according to LVMPD’s initial reporting; its later account says it was rented through Turo. The presence of those items was part of the early incident account, not by itself the final investigative conclusion.

On January 8, LVMPD said new evidence reinforced its conclusions that Livelsberger’s death was suicide and the explosion was intentional. The department also reported finding a possible manifesto and said Livelsberger had used generative AI to research explosives and ignition mechanisms. Those details were included in LVMPD’s January 8 update.
In its after-action report, released November 3, 2025, LVMPD said a joint investigation with federal partners confirmed a premeditated attack involving a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device. The report described the device as having the potential to cause mass casualties and extensive structural damage. The report’s release also makes clear that the document reviews police response and preparedness; it is not a test of the Cybertruck’s safety or performance.

Was the Las Vegas explosion linked to the New Orleans attack?
Officials considered terrorism and a possible connection to the New Orleans attack earlier on January 1. On January 2, FBI deputy assistant director Christopher Raia said, “At this point there is no definitive link between the attack here in New Orleans and the one in Las Vegas.” That statement, quoted by CBS News on January 2, 2025, describes the early investigative status. It should not be mistaken for a later finding about every aspect of the investigation.

Although a Cybertruck was the vehicle used, LVMPD’s later account characterizes the incident as a deliberate attack involving an explosive device. That finding does not establish that a battery malfunction caused the blast. Nor does an incident involving one vehicle establish a general safety conclusion about Cybertrucks.

Those are police-response findings, not consumer vehicle ratings or mechanical test results.
