The Hellephant A30 is Mopar’s supercharged 426-cubic-inch crate HEMI, with Mopar listing output at 1,000 hp and 950 lb-ft. Its $29,995 listed engine price is only one part of a conversion: the controller and installation kit are separate, and vehicle fit, supporting parts, labor, and legal use all need to be worked out for the specific build.
What is the Hellephant crate engine?
The Hellephant A30 is a 426-cubic-inch, supercharged HEMI V8 sold by Mopar as a crate engine for conversions. Mopar describes it as an option for nearly any pre-1976 vehicle when paired with its “plug and play” kit. That is marketing language, not a guarantee that the engine will fit or operate in every older car without additional work.
Mopar’s product page calls the engine a “Hellephant 426 Supercharged HEMI® V8 crate engine” and promotes its output as 1,000 horsepower and 950 pound-feet of torque. Those are manufacturer-published figures, not an independent dynamometer result. Mopar’s engine-accessories page provides the current product description and catalog listings.
How much horsepower does the Hellephant make?
Mopar lists the A30 at 1,000 hp and 950 lb-ft. Its October 2023 product sheet lists the A30, part number P5160194AD, at 1,000 hp; Mopar’s engine-accessories page gives the 950 lb-ft torque figure. Treat both as Mopar’s published specifications rather than a promise of output in a particular completed vehicle. Installation, vehicle setup, and operating conditions are not specified as part of those headline figures.

The Hellephant’s output sits above the figures Mopar published for two other supercharged crate HEMIs in its 2023 materials. The comparison is useful for understanding Mopar’s catalog positioning, but it does not establish equivalent conversion costs or which engine is right for a particular car.
| Engine listing | Mopar-published output | Listed engine price |
|---|---|---|
| Hellephant A30, 426 cu. in. | 1,000 hp; 950 lb-ft on Mopar’s engine-accessories page | $29,995 on Mopar’s engine-accessories page and 2023 product sheet |
| C170, 6.2L supercharged | 1,000 hp in Mopar’s 2023 product sheet | $25,795 in Mopar’s 2023 product sheet and engine-accessories listing |
| Hellcrate Redeye, 6.2L | 807 hp in Mopar’s 2023 materials | Not stated in the cited 2023 materials |
| Hellcrate, 6.2L | 717 hp in Mopar’s 2023 materials | Not stated in the cited 2023 materials |
The A30 and C170 are separate listings; do not treat their shared 1,000-hp figure as evidence that they are the same engine. Mopar’s listed price also does not include a complete installed conversion.
What does the Hellephant engine kit include?
The crate engine and controller/installation kit are separate items. Mopar’s eStore listing for kit 77072500AE identifies it as a “Hellephant 426 SC Crate HEMI Non-E.O. Engine Kit” and explicitly says the engine is sold separately. The listing includes:

The eStore says 77072500AE supersedes 77072500, 77072500AB, 77072500AC, and 77072500AD. Check the exact part revision and required package with Mopar or a dealer before ordering; product revisions and catalog details can change. Mopar’s eStore listing for 77072500AE gives the kit description and component list.
Mopar’s eStore listing states that HEMI crate-engine kits receive a three-year/100,000-mile powertrain limited parts-exchange warranty when the crate-engine controller kit is purchased on the same invoice as the engine. It also warns that failing to provide proof of the installation kit with the engine voids the stated warranty. Confirm the current warranty terms and documentation requirements with Mopar before purchase.
What does the Hellephant cost?
Mopar lists the A30 at $29,995 MSRP, with its engine-accessories page qualifying the price as “$29,995++” to indicate additional charges. Mopar’s October 2023 product sheet also lists $29,995 for A30 part P5160194AD. These are catalog figures, not a dealer quote or a complete build budget. Confirm the exact part number, current availability, delivered price, and any additional charges with a Mopar dealer.

The controller-kit listings show why it is important to match a price to a specific part and page revision. Mopar’s engine-accessories page lists a kit at $2,265; its October 2023 sheet gives $2,325 for an earlier kit part; and the eStore listing accessed for replacement kit 77072500AE shows $2,795. These are listed prices associated with different catalog entries, not interchangeable quotes. Verify the current price for the exact kit revision you need.
Beyond the engine and controller kit, Mopar catalogs supporting components such as a front-end accessory drive (FEAD) kit, an A/C expansion kit for 426/6.2L engines, a Tremec Magnum transmission kit, and a 45-degree oil-filter kit. These are planning leads, not a universal shopping list. Which parts a conversion requires—and whether they work with a particular vehicle—depends on the build.

Can you put a Hellephant in a classic car?
It may be a conversion option for a classic car, but Mopar’s “nearly any pre-1976 vehicle” claim and “plug and play” description do not establish universal fitment. Before committing, have a qualified builder assess the complete vehicle and configuration, including:
- Physical clearance and mounting
- Wiring, controller integration, and vehicle electronics
- Fuel delivery
- Cooling
- Transmission, driveline, and supporting components
- Intended use and applicable emissions or road-use rules
Mopar’s catalog identifies related parts, but it does not provide a universal parts list or an all-in labor and conversion estimate. A vehicle-specific plan is essential before buying an engine based on its headline output or an advertised fitment description.
Is the Hellephant legal for street use?
Mopar’s October 2023 product sheet states: “Not legal on pollution-controlled vehicles or vehicles registered for highway use.” This is Mopar’s disclaimer for the listed engine/kit, not a determination of the rules for every jurisdiction or vehicle configuration. Check with the relevant emissions and vehicle-registration authorities for the intended vehicle and location before planning road use. The eStore identifies kit 77072500AE as “Non-E.O.”; that label is another reason not to assume the package is approved for a particular street-registered car.
What should you compare before choosing one?
Compare the Hellephant with another crate engine on more than horsepower. The published catalog data can help narrow choices, but it cannot answer the vehicle-specific questions that determine whether a conversion is practical.
- Engine variant and displacement: Confirm whether the listing is the 426-cubic-inch A30 or a different engine such as the C170 6.2L.
- Published output: Compare Mopar’s stated power and torque, while remembering that catalog figures are not independent test results.
- Package cost: Separate the engine MSRP from the controller kit and the supporting parts, labor, and installation work.
- Fit and build requirements: Have the engine, wiring, fuel, cooling, and driveline requirements checked against the specific vehicle.
- Legal use: Resolve emissions and highway-registration questions for the vehicle and jurisdiction before purchase.
Mopar’s product information is available on its engine-accessories page and in its October 2023 crate-engine product sheet. Catalog specifications and prices do not establish current stock; availability and final pricing should be confirmed against the exact part number with a dealer.
