Jim Rockford’s gold car was a Pontiac Firebird presented on screen as an Esprit. Secondary accounts say the production cars were actually Formula models modified to resemble Esprits. The documented story covers Firebirds from the 1974 through 1978 model years, with the 1978 car carried into the show’s final season. The available accounts do not establish where any particular car went after filming.
What kind of Firebird did Jim Rockford drive?
On screen, Rockford’s car was a gold Pontiac Firebird Esprit. Esprit was a genuine Firebird trim designation: Pontiac’s 1974 Firebird brochure includes it in the model range.
That brochure establishes the period name, not the identity or factory specification of a car used in production. Secondary show-vehicle accounts describe the cars as Formula models altered to look like Esprits, including changes intended to give them a less overtly performance-oriented appearance. That reported production history helps explain why accounts distinguish what viewers saw from the cars’ alleged underlying trim.
Esprit, Formula, and Trans Am are not interchangeable
| Term | What it means here | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Esprit | The trim identity presented to viewers; also a real Firebird designation in Pontiac’s 1974 range. | Period brochure for the model name; show-vehicle accounts for the on-screen presentation. |
| Formula | The underlying model reported by secondary accounts, said to have been modified to resemble an Esprit. | Secondary show-vehicle accounts; no primary production record was located. |
| Trans Am | A separate Firebird trim often mixed up with Rockford’s car, but not the settled identification in these accounts. | The accounts describe the car as an Esprit presentation and reportedly a modified Formula, not as a Trans Am. |
Which model years appeared on the show?
Secondary accounts trace the cars used for the series across the 1974–1978 model years. They report that the 1978 model continued into the sixth and final season rather than being replaced by a 1979 Firebird.

The available accounts describe the cars used by the production; they do not identify a single surviving “Rockford Firebird,” confirm how many cars were used, or establish any car’s current owner or location. It is therefore not possible to say from these sources where a particular screen car ended up—or whether one survives today.
