B is a braking-oriented drive setting on many hybrid and electric vehicles. It generally increases deceleration when you lift off the accelerator, which can help manage speed on a long or steep descent. The exact effect varies by vehicle: B may use engine braking, regenerative braking, or a managed combination. It is not one standardized low gear, so check the owner’s manual for your make, model and year.
What happens when you drive in B?
In B, the vehicle is set up to slow more when you release the accelerator than it does in D, in the examples described by the manufacturers below. How it creates that deceleration depends on the vehicle. Some systems increase regenerative braking, which uses the electric motor to slow the vehicle; others describe engine braking or strong braking. The letter alone does not tell you which mechanism your car uses.
| Vehicle and model year | What its manufacturer says B does | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 Toyota Prius | Applies “engine braking or strong braking” when the accelerator is released on steep downward slopes. | The manual describes the intended effect; that wording does not establish the mechanism in every Toyota or operating condition. Toyota’s 2026 Prius manual |
| 2025 Honda CR-V Hybrid | Increases regenerative braking when driving down a long hill. | Regeneration may become less effective if the high-voltage battery is full or its temperature is low. Honda’s 2025 CR-V Hybrid manual |
| 2024 Honda CR-V Hybrid | Increases deceleration when you lift off the accelerator. | Honda also identifies downhill driving and stop-and-go traffic as possible uses. Honda’s 2024 CR-V B Range guide |
| 2024 Nissan ARIYA | Applies more regenerative braking than D when the accelerator is released. | This description is specific to the cited ARIYA manual. Nissan’s 2024 ARIYA manual |
| 2024 Nissan X-Trail e-POWER | Applies more regenerative braking than D when the accelerator is released. | At high speeds, regenerative braking may feel less effective than engine braking in a conventional vehicle. Nissan’s 2024 X-Trail e-POWER manual |
Is B a low gear, engine braking or regenerative braking?
There is no single answer that applies to every vehicle with a B position. In a conventional car, engine braking usually means using a lower gear to make the engine help slow the vehicle. In many hybrids and EVs, B instead adjusts how strongly the vehicle slows through regenerative braking. Some manufacturer descriptions use broader wording, such as “engine braking or strong braking,” rather than identifying one mechanism for every situation.
Honda’s explanation of its e:HEV deceleration selector makes the distinction explicit: it adjusts regenerative-braking strength, unlike conventional engine-powered paddle shifters that adjust engine braking by shifting to a lower gear. That explanation describes Honda’s system, not a universal rule for all B positions. Honda’s deceleration-selector overview

When should you use B?
Long or steep descents
This is the clearest use case in the manufacturer guidance. Increased deceleration when you lift off can help you control speed going downhill. Toyota’s 2026 Prius manual and Honda’s 2025 CR-V Hybrid manual describe B for descending; Nissan’s cited manuals describe stronger regenerative braking in B than in D.
Stop-and-go driving
Honda identifies this as a possible use for B range in the 2024 CR-V Hybrid. That does not make it a universal recommendation for hybrids or EVs; follow the instructions for your particular model.

Use the service brake when needed
B is not a substitute for the brake pedal. Apply the service brake when the vehicle needs more slowing, and use the manual’s guidance for selecting B and managing speed on descents.
B versus D: what changes?
D is described as normal driving in the cited Honda material. In the named Honda and Nissan hybrid and EV examples, B increases lift-off deceleration or regenerative braking relative to D. This is a comparison for those specific vehicles, not a promise that every car behaves the same way.

Does B stand for “brake”?
Nissan Japan’s FAQ says, “「B」はBRAKE(ブレーキ)のBです。”—“‘B’ is the B in BRAKE (brake).” That explains Nissan’s terminology; it does not establish a shared naming origin across manufacturers. Nissan Japan’s FAQ
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does B save fuel or recharge the battery more?
Do not assume that using B always improves fuel economy or maximizes useful energy recovery. The cited manufacturer guidance describes how to operate particular vehicles; it does not establish a cross-model efficiency advantage. Regenerative braking may also be less effective when the high-voltage battery is full or cold, as Honda notes for the 2025 CR-V Hybrid. Nissan warns that regenerative braking may feel less effective than conventional engine braking at high speeds in the 2024 X-Trail e-POWER.

How to check what B does in your car
- Find the owner’s manual for your exact make, model and year.
- Look under transmission, shifting, drive modes or regenerative braking for the B position or B range.
- Check what the manual says about deceleration when lifting off, when to use the setting, and any battery or speed limitations.
- If the manual recommends B for a descent, use the service brake as needed to maintain safe speed.
