The ship in the headline, ASAHI, is no longer on its way to Tokyo: Asahi Tanker reported its delivery on March 30, 2022, and later said it had entered commercial operation that spring. It is a battery-electric bunkering vessel, carrying fuel oil to other ships in Tokyo Bay—not a tanker that transports fuel to shore.
What ASAHI does in Tokyo Bay
ASAHI delivers marine fuel to ships, a service known as bunkering. Its electric propulsion makes for an unusual pairing: the vessel uses batteries to move while carrying fuel oil to refuel other vessels. Asahi Tanker and e5 Lab described it as a “pure battery tanker powered by large-capacity lithium-ion batteries” in their March 27, 2020 announcement.
That announcement called it the world’s first pure battery tanker; that is the companies’ characterization of the project. The original “coming to Tokyo” framing belongs to the build-up to the vessel’s launch and service, rather than its present status.

- detailed 12-inch scale model representing a modern commercial oil tanker. This replica celebrates the "titans of trade," featuring the classic flat-deck design, complex piping systems, stern bridge superstructure, and bulbous bow found on real-world supertankers.
- Unlike standard ship models, this piece showcases the intricate network of deck piping, valves, and catwalks characteristic of liquid cargo vessels. The multi-colored design (green deck, white superstructure, black/red hull) provides an authentic industrial look without the need for painting.
- Designed as a static display piece for logistics professionals, oil and gas industry workers, merchant mariners, and naval engineers. Its sturdy, flat-bottomed hull sits stable on any desk, shelf, or bookcase, making it a perfect professional accent for a corporate office or home study.

| Specification | As reported at delivery |
|---|---|
| Overall length | 62.00 m |
| Width | 10.30 m |
| Gross tonnage | 492 tons |
| Approximate speed | 10 knots |
| Fuel-oil tank capacity | 1,277 m³ |
| Battery capacity | 3,480 kWh |
| Propulsion | Kawasaki Battery System; two 300 kW azimuth thrusters and two 68 kW side thrusters |
These are published vessel specifications, not independent performance-test results. Earlier project and launch-stage releases reported figures including 499 tons, about 1,280 m³, 11 knots and 3,500 kWh. Those earlier numbers should not be mixed with the delivery particulars as though they were a single final specification.
What “zero emissions” means here
Asahi Tanker and e5 Lab say the fully electrified vessel eliminates onboard emissions of CO₂, nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur oxides (SOx) and soot during operation. They also describe reduced noise, vibration and engine maintenance as benefits. These are company-described operating benefits; they do not establish zero emissions across the vessel’s lifecycle or the electricity used to charge it.

The published material cited here does not give a quantified lifecycle-emissions comparison, charging-related emissions, operating-cost savings, range, charging time or measured comparison with a conventional tanker. Battery capacity alone cannot establish how far the ship can travel or how long it takes to recharge.
From ASAHI to a second electric bunkering vessel
In a January 2023 announcement, Asahi Tanker said ASAHI had been in commercial operation since the prior spring. It also described AKARI as a second pure battery-electric tanker that would provide bunkering and refueling services alongside ASAHI in Tokyo Bay. That establishes the operator’s stated plan and service context at the time; it does not provide a full comparative performance record for the two vessels.

Emergency power was a proposal, not a documented deployment
Asahi Tanker’s 2020 announcement also discussed the possibility of supplying electricity from the vessel’s batteries to land during a disaster. The company said feasibility was being studied with Tokyo Electric Power Company Energy Partners. The sources cited here do not document an actual emergency-power deployment, so this should be understood as a studied capability rather than a proven use.

ASAHI is the electric fuel-supply ship behind the headline, and the “coming to Tokyo” wording describes the project’s original announcement period. The available company announcements document delivery and commercial operation beginning in 2022, followed by plans for a second vessel. They do not establish the ships’ routes, operating status or performance as of October 2026.
