There is no production BMW X8. The name appeared for years in automotive reports about a large, high-performance SUV expected to sit above—or alongside—the BMW X7. When BMW officially revealed the vehicle in November 2021, it called it the BMW Concept XM. The production vehicle became the BMW XM, not the X8.
The short answer: BMW did not cancel an announced X8
“What happened to the BMW X8?” is slightly misleading because BMW never publicly announced a production model under the X8 name and then discontinued it. Instead, X8 was primarily a pre-launch reporting and speculation label used for a rumored flagship performance SUV.
Spy photos, development reports, and automotive speculation often described the project as an X8 or even an X8 M. Those reports may have reflected an actual BMW development program, but they were not the same as an official BMW product announcement. BMW’s own public reveal used a different name: XM.
The most accurate summary is therefore:
- BMW did not sell a production SUV called the X8.
- The vehicle widely rumored as the X8 was officially revealed as the Concept XM.
- The production version launched as the BMW XM, a standalone BMW M model.
- The BMW X7 remains a separate model, and BMW’s current U.S. lineup does not list an X8.
How the X8 rumor started
Before BMW showed the vehicle, reports described a very expensive, performance-focused SUV positioned at the top of the company’s sport-utility range. Because BMW’s SUV naming system already included the X1 through X7, the logical rumored name was X8.

Some coverage went further and predicted an “X8 M,” suggesting a model that would combine the size and luxury of a flagship SUV with the performance branding of BMW M. Images of heavily camouflaged test vehicles reinforced the speculation, but camouflage and media labels do not establish a final production name.
That distinction matters. Automakers routinely test vehicles before revealing their final identity, and unofficial names can persist through years of reporting. In this case, X8 became the familiar public shorthand even though BMW ultimately chose not to use it.
BMW’s official reveal changed the story
The decisive moment came in November 2021, when BMW introduced the BMW Concept XM at Art Basel Miami Beach. BMW described it as a preview of the most powerful BMW M vehicle then planned for series production and announced that production would begin at the company’s Spartanburg, South Carolina, plant at the end of 2022.
BMW M chief Frank van Meel later addressed the X8 question in an interview with Autocar. When asked whether the Concept XM would become the X8, he rejected that interpretation and explained that the vehicle was called XM because it was both an X model and an M model.
That explanation reflects more than a badge change. BMW wanted the vehicle to stand apart from the regular numbered X-series SUVs. Rather than presenting it as an X7 successor or an X8 positioned in a conventional numerical hierarchy, BMW presented the XM as a dedicated, high-performance BMW M product.
Why BMW chose the XM name
The XM name allowed BMW to communicate three things that “X8” would not have conveyed as clearly.
1. It was an SUV, but not a conventional X-series model
The “X” identified the vehicle’s SUV or Sports Activity Vehicle format. However, BMW did not frame it as simply the next step after the X7. The XM was intended to have its own design, performance identity, and market position.

2. BMW M was central to the vehicle
BMW described the XM as BMW M GmbH’s first standalone production vehicle since the M1. It was available exclusively as an M model rather than as a standard BMW SUV with an optional M Sport package.

An X8 name would naturally suggest a larger or more luxurious numbered X model. XM signaled that the vehicle was primarily an M product with SUV proportions.
3. The powertrain and design were intended to establish a new flagship
The XM introduced an aggressive design and a plug-in-hybrid performance system built around a V8 engine. The name helped BMW launch it as a distinct flagship rather than attach it to the established X7 naming structure.
What the BMW XM became
The production BMW XM is a high-performance Sports Activity Vehicle using a plug-in-hybrid powertrain that combines a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 with an electric motor.
BMW’s initial production launch highlights listed 653 horsepower for the original XM. The earlier Concept XM announcement cited a projected output of 740 horsepower. Those figures describe different stages of the vehicle’s development and should not be treated as the same specification:

|---|---|---|
| BMW Concept XM | Projected 740 hp | A forward-looking concept specification |
| Initial production BMW XM | 653 hp | The series-production launch specification |
The XM is also a plug-in hybrid, meaning it can use its battery and electric motor for some driving while retaining the long-distance and high-output characteristics of the V8. Its electrified powertrain was part of BMW’s performance strategy, not evidence that the vehicle was a conventional X7 derivative.
When did the BMW XM enter production?
BMW began series production of the first BMW XM in December 2022 at Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina. The XM was assembled on the same production site as the BMW X5, X6, and X7.

BMW’s original launch schedule called for the XM to reach dealers worldwide in spring 2023. In other words, the vehicle widely expected by some observers to be called the X8 did arrive—but it arrived as the XM.
Sharing a factory with the X7 does not make the XM an X8. It only describes manufacturing location and production arrangements. BMW continued to identify the two vehicles as separate models.
Is the BMW XM just an X8 with a different badge?
Not in BMW’s official product positioning. The XM may occupy the kind of high-end SUV territory that led people to predict an X8, but BMW did not describe it as an X8 renamed at the last minute.
The evidence supports a more careful interpretation: X8 was an unofficial name used during the vehicle’s development and in media coverage, while BMW chose XM for the public-facing product. The XM’s standalone BMW M positioning was an important part of the decision.
It is reasonable to say that the XM became the production answer to the X8 rumor. It is not accurate to say that BMW sold the X8 and later discontinued it, because no production X8 was publicly launched.
How the XM differs from the BMW X7
The BMW X7 remains BMW’s conventional full-size luxury SUV in the lineup, while the XM is the performance-focused M flagship. They share a manufacturing plant, but they serve different purposes.
| BMW X7 | BMW XM | |
|---|---|---|
| Role | Large luxury Sports Activity Vehicle | High-performance BMW M Sports Activity Vehicle |
| Positioning | Numbered X-series model | Standalone XM model |
| Powertrain emphasis | Luxury, utility, and multiple powertrain choices depending on market | V8 plug-in-hybrid performance system |
| Relationship to the rumored X8 | Separate model that remains in the lineup | The production vehicle associated with the X8 reports |
The XM should therefore not be described as an X7 replacement. BMW’s official model structure treats the X7 and XM as distinct vehicles.

What is the BMW XM Label?
BMW’s more recent U.S. model information further confirms that the company continued with the XM name rather than introducing an X8. BMW announced that the XM portfolio was being narrowed to a single model, the XM Label, with production scheduled to begin in August 2025 for the 2026 model year.
This is a change to the XM range, not a resurrection or renaming of the X8. The relevant current distinction is:
- BMW X7: the separate full-size X-series SUV.
- BMW XM Label: the remaining XM performance model in the announced 2026 portfolio.
- BMW X8: not listed as a current production model in BMW’s U.S. lineup.
Model availability, specifications, and naming can vary by country, so buyers should verify the local BMW lineup and model year. But based on BMW’s current official U.S. information, there is no production X8 to order.
Will BMW ever make an X8?
There is no confirmed production X8 in the information available for the current lineup. It is also too strong to say BMW has permanently ruled out the name. Automakers can change product plans, model names, and market strategies.
The defensible statement is narrower: BMW has not introduced a separate production X8, and the vehicle once widely rumored under that name became the XM in official production form. A future X8 should not be treated as confirmed unless BMW announces one.
Common mistakes when describing the BMW X8 story
- “The X8 was discontinued.” This implies that customers could buy a production X8. BMW did not publicly launch one.
- “BMW canceled the X8.” There is no public BMW announcement showing a formally announced production X8 followed by a cancellation.
- “The XM is the X8.” This is understandable shorthand, but BMW positioned the XM as a standalone M vehicle rather than an X8 in all but name.
- “The XM makes 740 hp.” That was the projected figure for the concept. The initial production XM launch figure was 653 hp.
- “The XM replaced the X7.” The X7 remains a separate model. The two were built alongside each other at Spartanburg.
- “Spy photos prove an X8 existed as a separate model.” Test vehicles and media labels can identify a rumored project without proving its final name or whether it was separate from the XM.
What should you call it?
If you are referring to the rumor, “the rumored BMW X8” is accurate. If you are referring to the vehicle BMW actually revealed and sold, use BMW XM.
The clearest one-sentence explanation is: The rumored BMW X8 was never launched as a production model; BMW revealed the project as the Concept XM and put the production vehicle on sale as the BMW XM.

For readers comparing BMW’s current flagship SUVs
If your interest in the X8 came from wanting BMW’s largest or most powerful SUV, the relevant vehicles to compare are the BMW X7 and BMW XM Label, not a nonexistent X8. The X7 is the conventional luxury and utility choice, while the XM Label is the specialized high-performance plug-in-hybrid option.
BMW XM scale models and other collectibles may also be relevant to enthusiasts who followed the X8-to-XM story, but availability and product authenticity should be checked before purchase.
Frequently Asked Questions
Was the BMW X8 ever produced?
No. BMW did not launch a production SUV called the X8. The name was used in pre-launch reporting and speculation, while the production vehicle became the BMW XM.
Did BMW rename the X8 to XM?
That is a useful shorthand, but it is not BMW’s official description. BMW revealed the project as the Concept XM and positioned the production vehicle as a standalone BMW M model. The available evidence supports a change in public name and positioning—or the use of X8 as an unofficial development label—rather than a formally announced X8 being renamed.

Is the BMW XM bigger than the X7?
The XM and X7 are separate large BMW SUVs with different purposes. The XM is BMW M’s high-performance flagship SUV, while the X7 is the conventional full-size luxury Sports Activity Vehicle. The fact that both were built at Spartanburg does not make the XM an X7 replacement or an official X8.
How much horsepower does the BMW XM have?
BMW’s initial production XM launch material listed 653 horsepower. The BMW Concept XM had cited a projected 740 horsepower, so the concept figure should not be confused with the initial production specification. Later XM Label figures belong to a different model configuration and model year.
Can I buy a BMW X8?
No current BMW production X8 is listed in the relevant official U.S. lineup. Buyers looking for the vehicles connected to the rumor should compare the BMW X7 and BMW XM Label, while checking local-market availability and model-year specifications.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: BMW did not cancel a production X8 after selling it. The X8 was an unofficial name attached to reports about a planned flagship performance SUV. BMW officially revealed that vehicle as the Concept XM, then began producing it as the BMW XM in December 2022. The X7 remains separate, and no production BMW X8 is currently listed.
