The 2025 Mercedes-Benz GLB is the shortest new three-row SUV sold in the United States, measuring 182.4 inches long. However, its third row is optional and best suited to children or short trips. For shoppers seeking a mainstream vehicle with standard three-row seating, the 185.8-inch Mitsubishi Outlander is the smallest choice. The Kia Sorento, at roughly 189.6 to 189.8 inches, is the strongest compromise between a compact exterior and a genuinely more usable third row.
That distinction matters: the shortest SUV is not automatically the best family SUV. Exterior length tells you how much vehicle you must park, but third-row legroom, cargo space, seating configuration, and whether the rearmost seats are practical determine how well the vehicle works day to day.
2025 three-row SUV rankings at a glance
| Rank | Model | Overall length | Seating | Third-row legroom | Cargo behind third row | Third-row status |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Mercedes-Benz GLB | 182.4 in | 5 standard / 7 optional | 29.1 in | 12.4 cu. ft. published cargo figure | Optional |
| 2 | Mitsubishi Outlander | 185.8 in | 7 | 18.7 in | 10.9 cu. ft. | Standard |
| 3 | Kia Sorento | 189.6–189.8 in | 7 or 6, depending on configuration | 29.6 in | 12.6 cu. ft. | Configuration-dependent |
| 4 | Hyundai Santa Fe | 190.2 in | Three rows | Not consistently listed in the U.S. specification material used here | Not consistently listed in the material used here | Factory third row |
Lengths are published exterior measurements for U.S.-market 2025 models. Small differences can result from drivetrain, wheel and tire package, trim, or measurement convention. The Sorento’s official comparison information illustrates that issue by listing both 189.6- and 189.8-inch figures.
1. 2025 Mercedes-Benz GLB: shortest overall
The 2025 Mercedes-Benz GLB is the dimensional winner at 182.4 inches long. It is also 72.2 inches wide without mirrors and 66.7 inches tall, making it substantially easier to fit into a tight garage or parking space than most three-row SUVs.

- Measuring range: 0 to 60 inches and 0 to 150 centimeters. There is a centimeter scale on the back, which is accurately printed in inches and centimeters. Both sides can be measured according to your requirements. You can put one in your pocket or backpack without taking up too much space
- Great Material: Tailor Vinyl tape measure won't stretch or deform, provides superior measurement consistence; Soft tape measure, a flexible and portable tape measure, made from soft plastic material, white color
- Operate and Read: Black markings on bright white tape is big enough for you to read, the tape has metal tabs on each end of the cloth tape measure to butt-up against the item your measuring; The metal ends also can prevent fraying
- Wide Application: Cloth tape measure; body tape measure, sewing tape measure, measuring tape tailor. Good sewing tool, accurate tape measuring for sewing, tailoring, body, waist measurement or measuring any curved surface. can provide you accurate measurements, suitable for a seamstress, a crafter, a quilter or whoever just need a flexible measuring tape
The catch is that the GLB does not come with three rows as standard. Its normal configuration seats five; an available third-row package increases capacity to seven. With that package, Mercedes-Benz lists 34.8 inches of third-row headroom, 29.1 inches of legroom, and 43.8 inches of shoulder room.
Those numbers make the GLB’s third row less compromised than its exterior size might suggest on paper, but the seats remain an occasional-use solution. They are most appropriate for children, smaller passengers, or short journeys. Adults will generally find access and knee room restrictive, and luggage space becomes limited when all seven seats are occupied.
Best for: shoppers who place the highest priority on the shortest possible exterior and want an optional emergency or child-oriented third row.
Not ideal for: families expecting three-row comfort comparable to a larger Sorento, Santa Fe, or traditional midsize SUV.
2. 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander: smallest mainstream three-row SUV
At 185.8 inches long, the 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander is the shortest mainstream, non-luxury SUV in this comparison. It is 74.7 inches wide and 68.8 inches tall. Unlike the GLB, the Outlander makes seven-passenger seating and the third row part of its standard configuration.
Its dimensions also show why “seven-passenger” does not mean seven adults will be comfortable. Mitsubishi lists 34.5 inches of third-row headroom, just 18.7 inches of third-row legroom, and 51.2 inches of shoulder room. There are 10.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row.
The Outlander’s rearmost seats are therefore best treated as child seating or occasional emergency seating. The short legroom is the most important limitation: it is 10.4 inches less than the GLB’s published third-row figure and 10.9 inches less than the Sorento’s. The Outlander can carry seven people, but it is not the best choice if adults regularly need to sit in row three.

For families who use all three rows, the small cargo area also deserves attention. A vehicle-specific 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander floor-mat or cargo-mat solution can help protect the cabin, but shoppers should verify the model year, trim, seating arrangement, and powertrain before ordering. Fitment may differ between gasoline and plug-in-hybrid versions and between factory and aftermarket accessories.
Best for: buyers wanting the shortest conventional family SUV with standard seven-passenger capability.
Not ideal for: regular adult use of the third row or large amounts of luggage behind all seven seats.
3. 2025 Kia Sorento: best size-and-usability compromise
The 2025 Kia Sorento measures approximately 189.6 to 189.8 inches long, depending on configuration. That makes it about four inches longer than the Outlander, but the extra length buys a much more credible third-row space.
Kia lists 36.8 inches of third-row headroom, 29.6 inches of legroom, and 53.0 inches of shoulder room. Cargo capacity behind the third row is listed at 12.6 cubic feet. The Sorento’s third-row legroom is nearly 11 inches greater than the Outlander’s and slightly greater than the GLB’s published figure.
The Sorento’s seating count requires careful attention to trim. Some versions use a second-row bench and seat seven, while others use second-row captain’s chairs and seat six. A listing that says “three rows” does not necessarily mean seven usable seating positions, so verify the second-row configuration on the specific vehicle.
The Sorento is still smaller than a full-size family hauler, and its third row is not equivalent to a minivan or larger SUV. But among the shortest options here, it offers the most balanced answer for families who need a compact footprint without accepting the Outlander’s exceptionally tight rear legroom.
Best for: families who want a relatively easy-to-park SUV and expect to use the third row more often than an emergency-only seat.

4. 2025 Hyundai Santa Fe: a slightly longer, boxier alternative
The 2025 Hyundai Santa Fe is 190.2 inches long, placing it just 0.4 to 0.6 inches beyond the Sorento, depending on which Sorento length applies. It remains compact compared with many traditional three-row SUVs, but it is not the smallest vehicle in this ranking.
Its upright, boxier body gives the Santa Fe a different space-to-length profile from the more traditionally shaped Outlander. Hyundai offers a factory three-row cabin with a 50/50 split-folding third row. As with the other compact three-row SUVs, deploying that row reduces the cargo area available for luggage.
The available U.S. specification material used for this comparison does not consistently expose a third-row legroom or behind-third-row cargo figure for the Santa Fe, so it would be misleading to rank it against the other models using invented or incomparable numbers. The practical conclusion is narrower: the Santa Fe is a compact-footprint, boxy three-row alternative, not the outright smallest or a replacement for a full-size family hauler.
Best for: shoppers who prefer an upright cabin and flexible folding seats while staying close to the 190-inch length threshold.

What “smallest” does—and does not—mean
This ranking uses published overall exterior length as the definition of smallest. It does not rank turning circle, width, interior volume, visibility, parking sensors, or the ease of placing a child in the third row.
Rank #4
- 20% more compact grip**: For improved ergonomics and control
- Integrated finger brake: For improved blade control
- Fractional blade graphics for quick and easy measuring
- Durable blade coating for longer blade life
Length is useful because it affects garage fit, curb space, and the amount of vehicle extending into a parking aisle. But it is only a starting point. A boxier SUV can make better use of its length than a sleeker one, while a short third row may technically create seven seats without offering meaningful adult comfort.

- Third-row access: check whether the second row tilts, slides, or folds and whether a child seat blocks the route.
- Cargo behind row three: 10.9 to 12.6 cubic feet is enough for some shopping or soft bags, but not necessarily for luggage for seven people.
- Second-row configuration: captain’s chairs can improve access but may reduce total seating from seven to six.
- Child-restraint fit: measure the actual car seat and confirm both the vehicle and child-restraint manufacturer instructions.
- Powertrain and trim: exterior dimensions and accessory fitment can vary slightly, and the same model name does not guarantee identical cargo-floor or mat dimensions.
How much smaller are these SUVs than larger three-row choices?
The four vehicles above are the compact end of the 2025 U.S. three-row SUV market. For perspective, the 2025 Subaru Ascent is 196.8 inches long, while the 2025 Mazda CX-90 is approximately 200.8 inches long without the license-plate holder. Both are genuine three-row SUVs, but neither belongs on a shortest-three-row shortlist.
The Ascent offers seven- or eight-passenger seating, 31.7 inches of third-row legroom, and 17.8 cubic feet behind the third row. The CX-90 offers six-, seven-, or eight-passenger configurations depending on trim, 30.4 inches of third-row legroom, and approximately 14.9 to 15.9 cubic feet behind row three. These models provide useful size benchmarks: moving to a longer SUV can add rear-seat and cargo flexibility, but it also makes parking and garage fit less compact.

2025 Volkswagen Tiguan
The 2025 U.S.-market Volkswagen Tiguan should not be included in this ranking. The previous small third-row option was removed, making the 2025 U.S. Tiguan a two-row vehicle.
2025 Mazda CX-90
The CX-90 is a genuine three-row SUV, but its approximately 200.8-inch length places it well outside the compact group. It is useful as a benchmark, not as one of the smallest choices.

Cargo and family-use accessories: verify fitment first
Compact three-row SUVs create a predictable problem: when the third row is occupied, there is less room for luggage, groceries, sports equipment, and muddy shoes. Floor liners, cargo mats, and organizers can protect or improve the available space, but they cannot create additional cargo volume.
If you are considering the Outlander, Mitsubishi documents all-weather floor mats and a dedicated cargo-area mat for the Trail Edition. Before buying an aftermarket product, confirm the exact model year, gasoline versus plug-in-hybrid powertrain, trim, cargo-floor arrangement, and whether the vehicle has the third-row configuration. A product described simply as fitting an “Outlander” may not fit every version of the 2025 model.
For road trips, external storage such as a roof cargo box or hitch-mounted carrier may address the limited space behind a deployed third row. Those products introduce their own requirements—roof-load limits, hitch capacity, clearance, installation, and added vehicle height—so they should be selected from the vehicle’s specifications rather than by appearance alone.

- Choose the Mercedes-Benz GLB if minimum exterior length is the overriding priority and the third row will mainly carry children or be used occasionally. Confirm that the specific GLB includes the optional third-row package.
- Choose the Mitsubishi Outlander if you want the shortest mainstream model and standard seven-passenger seating. Accept that its 18.7-inch third-row legroom makes row three a child-oriented space.
- Choose the Kia Sorento if you can accept roughly four more inches of exterior length in exchange for 29.6 inches of third-row legroom and slightly more cargo room behind the third row. Check whether the selected trim seats six or seven.
- Choose the Hyundai Santa Fe if its upright design, folding third row, and cabin layout appeal to you more than an absolute shortest-length ranking. It is only slightly longer than the Sorento but should still be evaluated in person with your passengers and cargo.
Before you buy: a practical test-drive checklist
- Bring the adults and children who will actually use the vehicle.
- Install the real child seats, rather than assuming a listed seating capacity guarantees compatibility.
- Have an adult sit in row three while the second row is adjusted for a normal passenger.
- Open the liftgate with all three rows in use and test the bags, stroller, sports equipment, or groceries you routinely carry.
- Check third-row access with a child seat installed in the second row.
- Measure your garage opening, parking space, and low-clearance areas if the difference between 182 and 190 inches matters.
- Confirm the exact trim, drivetrain, wheel package, seating configuration, and accessory fitment on the vehicle’s window sticker or manufacturer build sheet.
