The New Volkswagen California Ends a Van-Life Era—But Not Van Life

Volkswagen has not killed the California camper. It has ended the Transporter-based formula and moved the new Generation 7 California onto the long-wheelbase Multivan.

Yes—but only if “the VW van-life era” means the traditional Transporter-based factory California. Volkswagen has not abandoned the California name, the pop-up roof, or the idea of touring and sleeping in a Volkswagen. Instead, the new California Generation 7 breaks with decades of convention: it is based on the long-wheelbase, MQB-based Multivan rather than the commercial Transporter.

That platform change turns the California from a camper derivative of a work van into a purpose-focused leisure vehicle. The new layout brings two sliding doors, a more open outdoor-cooking arrangement, movable rear seats, plug-in-hybrid power, and more passenger-car-style technology. The result is a new chapter for VW van life—not its ending.

What has actually ended?

For decades, Volkswagen’s California was closely tied to the Transporter family. The T6.1 generation could be ordered as a Transporter, Caravelle, Multivan 4MOTION, or California, with the California acting as the factory camper version of the familiar T-series van.

That relationship has now changed. The new California is not simply a camper conversion of the current commercial Transporter. It is built from the long-wheelbase version of the MQB-based Multivan, the passenger-oriented Bulli line introduced as a separate model in 2021.

Airfix Quickbuild Volkswagen Camper Van Red Brick Building Plastic Model Kit J6017, Multicolour
  • Collect and build a range of Quickbuild models featuring legendary airplanes, classic cars, super cars and tanks! A great introduction into the world of modeling!
  • Quick and simple, designed as a push-fit construction model kit that can be put together in minutes.
  • Seamless fit construction that is hard to tell that it is push together kit!
  • Compatible with other brick building manufacturers.

Volkswagen’s wider strategy is therefore a separation of roles:

Model line Primary role What it means for buyers
Transporter Commercial work and cargo duties The traditional commercial-van architecture continues, but it is no longer the base of the new factory California.
Caravelle People-moving and shuttle work A passenger-transport solution rather than the dedicated camping product.
Multivan Flexible passenger and lifestyle use The long-wheelbase Multivan now provides the foundation for the California.
California Factory-built leisure camper The camping functions remain, but they are integrated into the Multivan-based product.
ID. Buzz Electric Bulli duty The electric member of Volkswagen’s broader Bulli and commercial-vehicle family—not proof that the California itself is fully electric.

Volkswagen’s corporate reporting describes the newer Transporter, Multivan, and ID. Buzz as a three-part commercial-vehicle lineup. The transition also marks the runout of the T6.1-era product family, which attracted especially strong demand while the new vehicles were being introduced. The evidence supports the end of the old product formula; it does not support saying that Volkswagen has abandoned the Transporter name or the camper market.

The biggest break is underneath: Multivan, not Transporter

The new California’s base vehicle changes almost everything about the design brief. The MQB platform is used across Volkswagen Group passenger cars and enables the California to share more of the Multivan’s passenger-focused packaging, electronics, driver-assistance systems, and plug-in-hybrid integration.

The cited UK brochure lists the new California at 5,173 mm long, compared with 4,904 mm for its predecessor. That is a 269-mm increase. It remains designed to fit in most multistorey car parks, but buyers comparing it with an older California should not treat the two vehicles as dimensionally identical.

It is also important to use the name accurately. Calling this vehicle “the T7 Transporter California” is misleading unless the distinction is explained. The California is based on the T7-era Multivan; the new commercial Transporter is a separate model.

Why two sliding doors change the campsite

The most obvious practical change is the adoption of two sliding side doors as standard in the cited current UK range. The outgoing style of California was strongly associated with a single sliding-door side and a fixed external relationship between the kitchen, campsite, and vehicle.

The second door gives the new California a more open layout:

  • The driver-side door improves access to the lounge and sleeping area.
  • The passenger-side door works with the redesigned kitchenette and the exterior table.
  • Both sides can be used for entering, leaving, loading, or moving around a crowded campsite.
  • The arrangement creates clearer separation between the interior living area and the outdoor cooking and eating area.

Volkswagen describes this as a three-zone camping concept: an interior living zone, an outside cooking-and-eating zone, and access through both sides of the vehicle. That is more than a cosmetic door change. It is an attempt to make the California work like a compact campsite rather than a van that happens to contain camping equipment.

Three trims, two kitchen concepts

The current UK material uses the names Beach, Coast, and Ocean; the brochure refers to the entry version as the Beach Camper. Equipment and naming can vary by market, so these descriptions should not be treated as a universal global specification.

Version Camping arrangement Roof and seating details in the cited UK specification
Beach Camper A compact rear slide-out mini-kitchen with a single-ring gas burner, cutlery drawer, storage, and a 230-volt socket. With the tailgate open, the rear kitchen can be used under the tailgate as shelter. Manual pop-up roof and three individual rear seats.
Coast A redesigned side kitchenette with storage, sink, gas cooking, a pull-out cool box, and access intended to support cooking outside the vehicle. Electro-hydraulic pop-up roof and two individual rear seats.
Ocean The more highly equipped version of the side-kitchen California concept, with the same basic emphasis on storage, sink, cooking, and outdoor access. Electro-hydraulic pop-up roof and two individual rear seats.

The pop-up roof remains central to the California identity. It is not an optional attempt to imitate the old camper formula: the roof is part of the vehicle’s standard camping concept. The Beach Camper uses a manual mechanism, while Coast and Ocean versions receive an electro-hydraulic roof as standard in the cited UK brochure. The roof fabric includes a front opening and side windows with mosquito nets.

Volkswagen also continues to specify sleeping accommodation for four, blackout blinds, an awning, an exterior table, and a compact cool box as key parts of the range. The awning can be used on either side in the cited UK material, which complements the two-door layout.

More flexible seats, less commitment to one interior layout

The new California is more modular behind the front seats. Its individual rear seats can be moved or removed, allowing owners to switch between camping, family travel, and carrying long items such as bicycles or surfboards.

That flexibility is one of the clearest signs that Volkswagen is positioning this vehicle as a lifestyle and everyday-use product rather than a permanently fitted commercial van. The exact number of rear seats differs by trim in the cited UK specification: Beach Camper has three individual rear seats, while Coast and Ocean have two.

The trade-off is that the word “California” no longer tells you the whole story. Buyers need to check the exact trim and market equipment rather than assuming every California has the same seats, kitchen, roof mechanism, electrical hardware, or storage arrangement.

How the new California’s camping systems are controlled

Volkswagen gives the new California three ways to manage its camper functions:

  1. The front infotainment system. This provides the vehicle’s main multimedia and vehicle-control interface.
  2. A 5-inch camper control unit in the C-pillar. Depending on trim and market, it can show water levels, lighting, power status, cool-box controls, and auxiliary-heater functions.
  3. The California app. The app extends the vehicle’s camper-related controls and status information, with exact functions dependent on specification and market.

The important point is not that every trim has identical digital functions. It is that Volkswagen has treated the camping equipment as an integrated electronic system rather than a collection of disconnected switches. Buyers should confirm the individual feature list before ordering, especially when comparing imported vehicles or different model years.

Powertrains: diesel, petrol, and plug-in hybrid—not full electric

The new California is not a fully electric camper. The current European and UK information cited for this article lists three broad powertrain choices, subject to market, trim, model year, and final approval:

Powertrain Listed specification Important qualification
2.0-litre TDI 150 PS Listed as a front-drive configuration in Volkswagen’s later range update.
2.0-litre TSI 204 PS Listed as a front-drive configuration in the later update.
1.5-litre TSI eHybrid 245 PS, 180 kW, six-speed DSG, 4MOTION The later update lists a 19.7-kWh lithium-ion battery. Electric-range figures and approvals vary by market and document.

The cited UK brochure lists the 245-PS eHybrid alongside the 150-PS TDI and 204-PS TSI in Coast and Ocean versions. That brochure marked acceleration figures as pending, so it would be inappropriate to present a definitive performance figure from that document. It also included WLTP electric-range figures, but those figures should be checked against the current local approval rather than copied as a universal number.

For buyers who want an electric Bulli, the ID. Buzz is the relevant Volkswagen product line. The California’s plug-in hybrid gives it an electrified option, but it does not turn the camper into a battery-electric vehicle.

Volkswagen’s latest technology update

A Volkswagen update dated July 22, 2026 describes the latest evolution of the Multivan and California as receiving a revised front end, a new 12.9-inch infotainment system, an updated cockpit, and enhanced Travel Assist. It again identifies the eHybrid 4MOTION as a 180-kW/245-PS model with a 19.7-kWh battery, alongside the front-drive TDI and TSI versions.

Those changes reinforce the strategic reason for using the Multivan as the base. The California can receive passenger-car-style connectivity and driver assistance while retaining its camping equipment. That does not automatically make it better for every owner: someone who prioritizes a traditional commercial-van layout may prefer the older Transporter-based formula. But it explains why Volkswagen chose to separate the products rather than simply put a new kitchen into the commercial Transporter.

What the platform change means for real buyers

If you want the old Transporter-based character

The new California is not a like-for-like continuation of the T6.1 California. Anyone comparing used or remaining-stock vehicles should check the base model, wheelbase, door layout, rear-seat configuration, kitchen position, and roof mechanism. “California” alone is no longer enough to identify the vehicle’s underlying architecture.

If you want a more adaptable family vehicle

The movable individual seats, passenger-car-based Multivan platform, two sliding doors, and sleeping space for four make the new design easier to understand as a vehicle that can serve as daily transport and a camper. The rear seats can be reconfigured or removed when the trip requires bikes, boards, or other long equipment.

If outdoor cooking matters

The choice between trims is significant. Beach Camper puts a compact kitchen at the rear, where the open tailgate can provide shelter. Coast and Ocean move the kitchen concept to the side of the vehicle, where the second sliding door and exterior table support a more social, open-air campsite.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If low-emission driving matters

The eHybrid is the relevant California powertrain to investigate, but it is still a plug-in hybrid. Its real-world electric distance, charging experience, taxation, and availability depend on local conditions. Do not assume that a European eHybrid specification, or its WLTP figure, applies unchanged to another country.

If you are shopping for equipment

If you are researching VW California camper accessories, check the generation, wheelbase, trim, roof type, kitchen position, electrical specification, and market before buying. Blackout shades, awning parts, coolers, shore-power cables, and storage products are not automatically interchangeable between the T6.1-based California and the new Generation 7 vehicle. A generic product description is not proof of fitment.

Is the California sold in the United States?

The detailed specifications discussed here come primarily from Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ European and UK websites and brochures. UK equipment, prices, taxation, and trim names should not be presented as U.S. specifications.

The Volkswagen U.S. accessories material reviewed for this research focuses on the ID. Buzz and does not establish that the new California is sold through U.S. retail channels. American readers should therefore verify local availability directly rather than assuming that a European California can be ordered from a U.S. Volkswagen dealer.

For readers in a market where the vehicle is offered, the sensible next step is to build the new Volkswagen California using the local configurator and compare Beach, Coast, and Ocean equipment line by line. A dealer or official test-drive channel is especially important because the kitchen, roof, seats, and powertrain can change substantially between trims.

Renting may be the best way to understand the change

Specifications cannot fully answer whether the new arrangement suits a particular style of travel. The position of the kitchen, usefulness of the second sliding door, manual versus electro-hydraulic roof, seat-removal process, and storage layout are all easier to judge during an actual trip.

Volkswagen promotes ways to rent a Volkswagen California, including a route through VW Financial Services in Germany. Volkswagen’s California World ecosystem also points travelers toward a roadsurfer California rental network across Europe and North America. Fleet composition, vehicle generation, and local availability can vary, so a rental listing is not proof that the new California is sold in every one of those markets.

A rental is best treated as a trial of the camper format: can two people cook comfortably, does the sleeping arrangement work, is the extra length manageable, and do the doors and seat system improve the trip? Those questions matter more than the California badge alone.

So, is Volkswagen ending VW van life?

No. Volkswagen is ending one interpretation of VW van life: the idea that the factory California must always be the camper version of the current commercial Transporter.

The recognizable ingredients remain. There is still a pop-up roof, sleeping accommodation, a kitchen, an awning, blackout equipment, a cool box, camper controls, and a Beach-to-Ocean hierarchy. Volkswagen is still promoting California rentals and a broader travel ecosystem. The company is also offering a plug-in-hybrid powertrain rather than abandoning the product while it waits for a fully electric camper solution.

What has ended is the single-platform Bulli strategy. The Transporter now has a clearer commercial mission, the Multivan is the passenger and lifestyle base, the ID. Buzz covers the electric side of the range, and the California becomes a dedicated Multivan-based camper. That is a significant break with the past, but it is better described as segmentation and modernization of van life than its cancellation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the new Volkswagen California based on the Transporter?

Not in the traditional sense. The new California Generation 7 is based on the long-wheelbase, MQB-based Multivan. The new commercial Transporter is a separate model, so calling the camper a “Transporter California” without that qualification is misleading.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the new California fully electric?

No. The cited European and UK specifications include a 150-PS diesel, a 204-PS petrol engine, and a 245-PS plug-in hybrid with 4MOTION. The ID. Buzz is Volkswagen’s separate fully electric Bulli line.

What are the new California trim levels?

The cited UK range includes Beach or Beach Camper, Coast, and Ocean. Beach Camper uses a rear slide-out mini-kitchen and a manual roof; Coast and Ocean use the side-kitchen layout and receive an electro-hydraulic roof in the cited UK specification.

Does the new California have two sliding doors?

Yes, two sliding side doors are standard in the cited current UK range. The second door helps connect the side kitchenette and exterior table with the campsite and also improves access to the living area.

Can U.S. buyers assume the new California is available locally?

No. The detailed information cited here is primarily European and UK material, and the reviewed U.S. Volkswagen accessories page does not establish U.S. retail availability of the California. U.S. readers should verify availability with local Volkswagen channels.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The new Volkswagen California ends the Transporter-based factory-camper tradition, not the California or the van-life idea. Moving the camper to the long-wheelbase Multivan brings two sliding doors, a more flexible interior, a redesigned outdoor-oriented kitchen, and plug-in-hybrid technology. It also means buyers must stop treating “California” as shorthand for a Transporter: the base vehicle, trim, market, and powertrain now matter more than ever.
