Kohler Engines did not shut down or disappear. Kohler Co. separated its Energy business in 2024, Platinum Equity became the majority owner, and the former Kohler Energy business officially rebranded as Rehlko on September 17, 2024. As a result, Kohler Engines are gradually becoming Rehlko Engines.
The engines, product families, parts support, manuals, dealers, and much of the legacy infrastructure remain connected to the former Kohler operation. During the transition, you may see Kohler-branded engines, Rehlko-branded engines, or dual branding on products and packaging.
The short answer
Kohler Co. did not sell or discontinue Kohler Engines as an isolated brand. Instead, it moved its entire Energy business into a separate independent company in a transaction with Platinum Equity. The transaction closed on May 6, 2024. That business initially operated as Kohler Energy and then changed its name to Rehlko in September 2024.
The Energy portfolio included:
- Kohler Engines and Power Systems
- Home Energy
- Uninterruptible power products
- Clarke Energy
- Curtis Instruments
- Heila Technologies
According to the official closing announcement, Platinum Equity became the majority owner and Kohler Co. remained an investment partner. The purchase price and exact ownership percentages were not disclosed.

What is Rehlko?
Rehlko is the new corporate identity for the former Kohler Energy business. The company says the name retains the letters associated with “Kohler” while establishing an independent identity. Its legal entity is identified in Rehlko’s FAQ as Discovery Energy, LLC.
The former engine operation now presents itself through the Rehlko Engines website. That site continues to list gasoline, diesel, alternative-fuel, and marine engines. In practical terms, “Kohler Engines is now Rehlko” is the most accurate way to describe the change.
This is primarily a change in corporate ownership and branding—not evidence that every existing Kohler engine was redesigned, replaced, or mechanically altered.
Kohler Engines and Rehlko: the timeline

The dates are company-published transition targets. Actual labeling can vary by geography, certification status, equipment manufacturer, and remaining inventory.
Why are some engines still labeled Kohler?
The changeover is not happening overnight. Rehlko’s transition guideline says Kohler-branded products and spare parts may continue to be sold until existing inventory is depleted. Product codes are intended to remain unchanged.
That means a buyer or repair shop may encounter:
- An older engine carrying a Kohler label
- A newer engine carrying a Rehlko label
- Packaging with both Kohler and Rehlko references
- A Kohler model name in an equipment manufacturer’s listing
- Rehlko documentation that still references Kohler-compatible parts
The published transition schedule separates engine groups:
- KDI diesel engines: Rehlko branding began appearing in the first quarter of 2025.
- Other diesel engines: Rehlko branding began appearing by the third quarter of 2025.
- Gasoline engines: the transition began with model year 2026, corresponding to the fourth quarter of 2025, and is expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2026.
- All engines: the guideline expects the broader transition to conclude by April 2027.
These dates do not mean a Kohler-labeled engine is counterfeit, obsolete, or unsupported. They usually reflect where that individual product sits in the inventory and certification transition.
Are Kohler Engines still being made?
The engine business is still active under Rehlko. The current catalog includes gasoline engines ranging from approximately 3 hp to 41 hp, along with air-cooled and liquid-cooled diesel engines, alternative-fuel engines, and marine products. Listed gasoline families include models such as the ECV938, ECV936, ECV834, ECV830, ECH980, CH1000, CH940, CV832, and CV829.

Rehlko also introduced the Command PRO 888 after the rebrand. Rehlko describes the 888cc commercial turf engine as available in carbureted CV829 and CV832 versions, with electronic-fuel-injection versions included in current product materials.
That launch is significant because it shows the company is continuing to develop and market engines. It is not simply selling off old Kohler inventory.
However, the survival of the overall engine business does not guarantee that every older model remains in production. Individual models can be retired, replaced, or limited to specific markets. Rehlko’s alternative-fuel catalog, for example, identifies some models as retired. Model-level availability must be checked separately.
What changed for owners?
Corporate ownership
The engine business is no longer part of Kohler Co.’s operating structure in the same way it was before May 2024. Kohler Co. said the separation would allow it to focus more closely on its Kitchen & Bath, Wellness, and Hospitality businesses, while the Energy business pursued its own growth under Platinum Equity.

Branding and websites
Some support and product information has moved from Kohler-branded properties to Rehlko domains. Searching only for “Kohler” may therefore miss current documentation, while searching only for “Rehlko” may miss older manuals, retailer listings, and parts references.
For the best results, search both brand names together with the engine’s model and specification numbers.
Labels, certifications, and parts packaging
Labels and certifications are being updated in phases. Certification changes matter because emissions requirements and approved configurations can vary by engine model, application, and location.

Do not select a replacement engine or emissions-related component solely because the model name looks similar. Confirm the complete model, specification, serial number, application, and applicable local requirements.
What should you do if you own a Kohler engine?
- Record the identification information. Write down the model number, specification number, and serial number from the engine label. Photograph the label if it is dirty, faded, or difficult to read.
- Search both names. Try searches such as “Kohler [model number] manual,” “Rehlko [model number] manual,” “Kohler [part number],” and “Rehlko [part number].”
- Use the current Rehlko support pages. The Rehlko service section provides access to manuals, troubleshooting information, dealer resources, warranty information, and parts support.
- Verify the part before ordering. Rehlko’s gasoline-parts pages refer to Rehlko/Kohler spare parts, including maintenance kits, oil filters, fuel filters, air filters, and oil. Compatibility is still model-specific.
- Ask an authorized service facility about warranty work. Warranty coverage depends on the engine, purchaser, application, location, and terms in effect for that product. Rehlko directs U.S. and Canadian customers to authorized service facilities.
A brand-name search is not enough to establish compatibility. Two engines with similar model names may have different crankshaft dimensions, shaft configurations, emissions certifications, fuel systems, or equipment applications.
Choosing maintenance parts during the transition
If you need routine service supplies, a Kohler engine maintenance kit or Rehlko/Kohler maintenance kit can be a convenient starting point—but only after matching the kit to the exact engine model and specification number. A kit that fits one Command, Courage, or commercial engine family may not fit another.
Depending on the engine, a maintenance kit may include items such as an oil filter, air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs, or other scheduled-service components. Check the contents and the manufacturer’s compatibility information before purchasing. The same rule applies if you shop for an individual Kohler engine oil filter, air filter, or fuel filter through a retailer.
Rehlko also lists 300-hour oil-change kits for supported gasoline engines. Those kits combine Rehlko PRO 10W-50 synthetic oil with an extended-life oil filter. The 300-hour interval is conditional: it applies only to supported engines when the specified oil and filter combination is used and the applicable engine guidance is followed. It should not be generalized to every Kohler or Rehlko engine.
What happened to Kohler generators?
Kohler generators followed a related but not identical branding path.
The generator and Energy operations became part of Rehlko, but residential standby products continue to be marketed as KOHLER generators. The KOHLER Home Energy website identifies Kohler Generators as part of Rehlko, formerly Kohler Energy, while continuing to promote KOHLER-branded home standby generators, dealer support, warranty protection, and customer assistance.
The practical distinction is:
- Kohler Engines: transitioning to Rehlko Engines branding.
- Residential standby generators: still marketed under the KOHLER name within Rehlko.
- Older equipment: may continue to carry Kohler labels and remain serviceable during the transition.
A home standby generator is a separate product category from a lawn mower, zero-turn mower, pressure washer, or other equipment using a small Kohler engine. The generator branding should not be interpreted as evidence that every Kohler-branded engine remains part of Kohler Co.
Readers specifically researching residential backup power can review KOHLER home standby generators through the company’s generator site. Generator sizing, installation, fuel type, transfer equipment, permits, and dealer qualification require a separate evaluation.

Does Rehlko still provide parts, manuals, and warranty service?
Yes. Rehlko’s current engine support structure includes:
- Parts lookup and parts purchasing resources
- Engine manuals and technical documents
- Troubleshooting information
- Dealer lookup
- Warranty information
- Gasoline and diesel parts resources
- Maintenance and extended-warranty information
Rehlko says its service network includes approximately 13,000 dealers worldwide, although the practical availability of a dealer depends on your location and engine model. For complex repairs, warranty claims, fuel-system work, or emissions-related issues, use the company’s dealer and warranty resources rather than relying on a generic online listing.
If you need model-specific help, start with the manuals and service hub, then use the dealer locator or warranty instructions. Keep your proof of purchase and engine identification information available.

There is no responsible basis for declaring that the ownership change automatically improved or damaged engine quality. The official transaction and rebrand materials explain the corporate structure, product portfolio, and transition plan; they do not provide an independent before-and-after reliability study or a complete neutral analysis of post-transaction pricing and durability.
For a purchasing decision, evaluate the specific engine and application using:
- Documented model specifications
- Warranty length and exclusions
- Local parts and service availability
- Emissions certification
- Professional or independent testing
- Known service bulletins or repair patterns
- Total ownership cost for the equipment
Neither the Kohler name nor the Rehlko name, by itself, proves that a particular engine is the right choice. The ownership change is a corporate fact, not a reliability test.

Those changes can make a familiar brand appear to have vanished from a retailer’s website or product label. But the current Rehlko catalog, parts pages, manuals, dealer network, and post-rebrand product launches show that the engine business continues.

What the change means when buying a replacement engine
If you are replacing an engine rather than simply servicing one, do not assume a Rehlko model is a direct replacement because it has a similar horsepower rating or model-family name.
Before buying, compare:
- Exact model and specification number
- Horsepower and rated speed
- Crankshaft diameter, length, and keyway
- Mounting-hole pattern
- Starter, charging, and wiring configuration
- Throttle and choke controls
- Fuel system and fuel-pump requirements
- Exhaust and muffler arrangement
- Oil capacity and filtration system
- Emissions certification for your location
- Equipment manufacturer approval and warranty implications
In some cases, the correct replacement may carry a Kohler label; in others, it may carry a Rehlko label. The label alone does not determine interchangeability.
