Short answer: Donut Lab says its Donut Battery is an all-solid-state battery ready for OEM vehicle production, with a claimed 400 Wh/kg energy density, a full charge in as little as five minutes, up to 100,000 cycles, and lower cost than lithium-ion. Those specifications remain company claims rather than a complete, independently verified demonstration at passenger-EV pack scale.

The company has published charging and self-discharge test results and has said Verge Motorcycles will use the battery in 2026 motorcycles. However, those reports do not establish every headline specification, mass production at automotive volume, or five-minute charging for a 75–100 kWh car battery. Whistleblower allegations and a later independent investigation have intensified the dispute, while Donut Lab continues to defend its data.

What Donut Lab announced at CES 2026

On January 5, 2026, Finnish technology company Donut Lab announced what it called the Donut Battery: an all-solid-state battery that it said was ready for OEM vehicle manufacturing. The announcement said Verge Motorcycles would use the battery in motorcycles planned for 2026.

Donut Lab described the motorcycle application as capable of gaining up to 60 kilometres of combined range per minute of charging and charging in less than 10 minutes. A later Donut Lab battery page promoted a more ambitious set of headline specifications:

  • 400 Wh/kg energy density
  • A full charge in five minutes
  • Up to 100,000 cycles of design life
  • A cost lower than conventional lithium-ion batteries
  • Availability for vehicle production

These claims describe a potentially transformative battery. A lighter battery with much higher energy density could improve vehicle range or reduce vehicle weight. Very fast charging could narrow the practical gap between electric vehicles and combustion-powered cars. Long cycle life could reduce degradation and battery-replacement concerns.

But the wording matters. “Production-ready” is Donut Lab’s description of its intended OEM status, not independent proof that the battery has completed every automotive qualification, regulatory approval, long-duration fleet test, warranty validation, or high-volume manufacturing milestone. Those are separate gates between a promising cell and a mass-market vehicle battery.

Donut Lab’s advertised figures versus what is established

Donut Lab claim What the public evidence currently supports
All-solid-state battery Donut Lab identifies the product as all-solid-state. Publicly discussed testing has not settled the chemistry dispute to the satisfaction of all independent observers.
400 Wh/kg This is a company-published headline figure. The available reporting does not establish that 400 Wh/kg has been independently verified under a clearly defined, automotive-relevant test.
Five-minute full charge Donut Lab advertises this as a best-case specification. A charging test on a supplied cell does not automatically demonstrate the same result for a complete vehicle pack.
Up to 100,000 cycles The figure is a design-life claim. A meaningful independent verification would need to disclose depth of discharge, charge rate, temperature, end-of-life threshold, usable energy and test duration.
Lower cost than lithium-ion Donut Lab makes the comparison, but a cost claim requires a transparent basis such as materials, manufacturing yield, pack components, production scale and warranty assumptions.
Ready for OEM vehicles The company has announced an OEM and Verge Motorcycle application. That is not the same as demonstrating sustained, defect-controlled production of automotive battery packs.

Donut Lab’s battery page also shows a charging curve that appears to reach approximately 90% in roughly six minutes. That graphic does not necessarily contradict the separate five-minute statement, because the test conditions, charge window and definitions may differ. It does show why the headline should not be treated as a universal promise that every vehicle can go from empty to 100% in five minutes.

What the published tests do—and do not—show

Donut Lab published a charging-performance report in February 2026 associated with testing at Finland’s VTT Technical Research Centre. The available description indicates that a supplied cell was tested for charging behaviour. The report identified the sample as a solid-state battery based on information supplied by the customer; that wording is important because it does not mean the public report independently established every aspect of the cell’s chemistry or the company’s complete product specifications.

Donut Lab later published additional results concerning self-discharge. The company argued that the cell’s ability to retain charge helped disprove the idea that the device was merely a supercapacitor. That is a reasonable distinction to investigate: batteries and supercapacitors store energy differently and have different discharge characteristics.

However, a self-discharge test has a narrow purpose. It may provide evidence that a device behaves like a battery rather than a conventional supercapacitor, but it does not by itself prove:

  • the complete chemical composition of the cell;
  • that the cell is genuinely all-solid-state under the relevant definition;
  • 400 Wh/kg energy density;
  • 100,000-cycle durability;
  • safe operation in a large vehicle pack;
  • repeatable charging across many production cells; or
  • the ability to manufacture defect-free cells at automotive volume.

The same limitation applies to fast-charging data. A small cell can have a very different thermal path, current distribution and cooling requirement from a 75–100 kWh passenger-EV pack. A successful cell-level demonstration is worth examining, but it is not automatically a vehicle-level charging session.

Independent reporting, including coverage by IEEE Spectrum, has noted that even favourable testing of selected properties would not demonstrate the manufacturing leap needed for automotive deployment. The key question is not only whether one impressive sample can charge quickly. It is whether thousands or millions of cells can be made consistently, assembled safely into packs, operated for years and supported by an automaker’s warranty.

Why five-minute charging is so difficult at car-pack scale

Charging time depends on much more than the battery’s chemistry. It depends on pack capacity, starting state of charge, the charging curve, voltage, current, temperature, cooling, charger capability and the amount of energy lost during charging.

Consider a simple illustration rather than a Donut Lab test result. Charging a 100 kWh battery from empty to full in five minutes would require an average of about 1.2 megawatts before charging losses. A 75 kWh pack would require about 900 kW under the same idealized assumption. Real systems would need still more input power to account for conversion and charging losses.

That average also hides the charging curve. Batteries generally do not accept maximum power identically from 0% to 100%. The vehicle may reduce power as the state of charge rises, as the cells warm up, or when voltage and safety limits are approached. A claim such as “five minutes” therefore needs a precise definition:

  • What battery capacity was tested?
  • Was the result measured from 0% to 100%, or over a smaller state-of-charge window?
  • Was it a single cell, a module or a complete pack?
  • What were the cell temperature and cooling conditions?
  • What voltage and current did the charger deliver?
  • How much power was drawn from the grid after charging losses?
  • Was the result repeatable across multiple samples?

A small motorcycle battery is not equivalent to a large passenger-car battery. Donut Lab’s announced Verge application could be a useful vehicle demonstration if the battery is actually installed, operated and independently documented. It would still not prove that a 75–100 kWh family EV can accept the same charging performance.

The dispute over what the battery actually is

The technical claims became more contested during 2026. In April, Science reported allegations from a whistleblower who said Donut Lab’s battery was not what the company claimed. Reporting identified the former Nordic Nano executive as alleging that Donut Lab overstated battery specifications and production capacity.

Engadget reported that Donut Lab’s partner companies denied wrongdoing and that Donut Lab maintained that its claims were accurate. Donut Lab and Nordic Nano also issued a joint April statement saying they did not know the exact nature of a criminal complaint referenced in the reporting, rejecting allegations of criminal conduct or misleading investors, and standing behind their previously announced battery properties and production claims.

In June 2026, an investigation led by battery researcher Ryan Inis Hughes, known online as Ziroth, reached a more specific technical conclusion. As reported by Electrek and Tom’s Hardware, the investigation involved more than 20 independent battery experts and said the electrochemical characteristics of a tested cell were consistent with conventional lithium-ion chemistry rather than the solid-state chemistry promoted by Donut Lab.

That investigation is significant evidence in the dispute, but it should be described accurately. It is an independent investigation’s conclusion, not a final judicial finding or a universally accepted scientific verdict. The quality of the conclusion depends on the sample, testing methods, chain of custody, published data and the ability of other laboratories to reproduce the work.

Donut Lab’s June 9 statement rejected the criticism. The company said the circulated material merely compiled claims it had addressed previously, questioned the investigator’s independence because of a reported commercial relationship with CATL, and said it continued to stand behind its technical data and commitments.

The result is an unresolved conflict between Donut Lab’s specifications and the conclusions reported by critics. It would be premature to say the battery has been definitively debunked. It would be equally premature to present the 400 Wh/kg, five-minute, 100,000-cycle and lower-cost figures as independently proven.

How Donut Lab compares with other solid-state battery programs

Donut Lab’s announcement stands out because it combines several unusually strong claims—very high energy density, extremely fast charging, exceptionally long cycle life, low cost and immediate OEM readiness. Other major solid-state programs generally describe commercialization as a staged process involving validation, manufacturing partnerships and future production targets.

Program Publicly described position Why the comparison matters
Donut Lab Claims a production-ready all-solid-state battery and an announced 2026 Verge Motorcycle application, while its chemistry, specifications and production claims are disputed. The company is presenting a much more immediate commercialization position than most solid-state announcements, so the supporting evidence needs to cover both performance and manufacturing.
Toyota and Idemitsu Have described cooperation aimed at mass-producing all-solid-state batteries, with commercialization targets in the late 2020s. A late-2020s target indicates that materials, manufacturing and validation remain significant steps even for large established companies.
QuantumScape Its 2026 annual filing described QSE-5 lithium-metal solid-state technology as continuing through testing, validation and commercialization work. A named product platform can still be pre-deployment. Testing and planned commercialization are not the same as broad consumer availability.
Factorial Energy After announcing its 2026 Nasdaq listing, Factorial described a commercialization model built around manufacturing partnerships. Partnerships can be a route to scale, but they also illustrate the difference between validating a technology and producing it broadly for vehicle programs.

A 2026 technical review of solid-state batteries likewise described the technology as promising for electric vehicles while emphasizing continuing challenges in materials, manufacturing and vehicle integration. Solid-state batteries may eventually offer important advantages, but the industry should not be treated as though every laboratory or pilot result represents a finished car battery.

What would verify the Donut Battery claims?

The most useful next evidence would be specific, repeatable and independently inspectable—not another headline specification. A credible validation package would include the following:

  1. Identifiable test samples. Independent laboratories should be able to inspect cells whose origin, production date, design and chain of custody are documented.
  2. Complete chemistry characterization. Multiple methods should establish the cell’s materials and distinguish an all-solid-state design from a conventional lithium-ion cell or another hybrid construction.
  3. Clearly defined energy density. The 400 Wh/kg figure should specify whether it applies to active materials, a cell, a module or a complete pack; the usable-energy calculation, mass boundaries, voltage range and test conditions should be published.
  4. Independent cycle-life testing. A 100,000-cycle claim needs a defined depth of discharge, charge and discharge rate, temperature, rest periods, capacity-retention threshold and energy throughput. A design target is not the same as a completed test.
  5. Pack-level charging tests. Testing should show repeatable charging on a complete vehicle-relevant pack, including the starting state of charge, charge endpoint, power curve, cooling system, safety limits and charging losses.
  6. Automotive safety and durability validation. A vehicle battery must withstand abuse, vibration, temperature changes, moisture, crash-related conditions, thermal events and years of operation—not merely pass a short laboratory charge test.
  7. Manufacturing evidence. Donut Lab would need to show sustained production, defect rates, yield, quality control and the ability to make enough identical cells for vehicle programs.
  8. Real vehicle and warranty data. An independently documented Verge motorcycle or other vehicle operating in customer-like conditions would be more informative than an announcement alone. Longer-term fleet, degradation and warranty data would be stronger still.

Until that evidence is available, the most defensible description is that Donut Lab has announced an ambitious battery technology and published selected test results, while the complete performance and commercialization claims remain unverified and contested.

What drivers can buy today

There is no indication that Donut Lab’s battery is a consumer-replaceable product that drivers can purchase and install in an existing EV. The company’s claim concerns OEM vehicle supply, and an announced motorcycle application is not a replacement battery or proof of mass-market car availability.

For readers who want technical background rather than a product that claims to deliver this performance, a solid-state battery technology book can provide useful context on cell chemistry, interfaces, manufacturing and the difference between laboratory performance and production engineering. That reading is educational and should not be treated as independent endorsement of Donut Lab’s disputed figures.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Donut Lab’s solid-state battery proven to charge an EV in five minutes?

Not at passenger-EV pack scale based on the publicly described evidence. Donut Lab advertises a five-minute full charge, but the disclosed charging work concerns a supplied cell or selected test conditions and does not establish a complete 75–100 kWh vehicle-pack charge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does 400 Wh/kg mean a production electric car will have 400 Wh/kg?

Not necessarily. The figure is a Donut Lab headline claim, and the relevant mass boundary—cell, module or pack—must be specified. No complete independent verification of the figure under defined automotive conditions has been established in the available reporting.

Has Donut Lab’s battery been debunked?

The claim is disputed, not conclusively resolved. A June 2026 investigation reported that a tested cell’s electrochemical characteristics were consistent with conventional lithium-ion chemistry, while Donut Lab rejected that conclusion and defended its technical data.

Can I buy a Donut Battery for my current EV?

There is no indication that it is sold as a consumer-replaceable battery. Donut Lab has described an OEM vehicle application, so any availability would depend on an automaker or vehicle program rather than an aftermarket purchase.

The Bottom Line

The bottom line

Donut Lab says it has a production-ready all-solid-state battery that can deliver 400 Wh/kg, last up to 100,000 cycles and charge fully in five minutes. If independently demonstrated in a durable, mass-produced passenger-EV pack, that combination would be a major breakthrough.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

As of the evidence publicly discussed through June 2026, the safer conclusion is narrower: selected charging and self-discharge results have been published, but they do not verify the entire marketing package. The chemistry, energy density, cycle life, pack performance and production capacity remain subjects of dispute. Treat the Donut Battery as an ambitious, closely watched claim—not yet as a proven five-minute EV solution.
